Cheapest the Special Edition has been, pretty much (think there might be less than 5 pence in it), so if you were holding out on buying then this is an excellent price that is unlikely to be bested anytime soon.

Might be a far stretch but any way to get new-ish graphics on this old game?

Have a look on YouTube at modded Skyrim.
These days, the easiest way is via Wabbajack:
    wabbajack.org/gallery?selectedGame=Skyrim%20Special%20Edition
As with that some modlist curator has done all the hard work of choosing mods and getting them all to work together. All that remains is downloading them (admittedly without Nexus Premium that can take a while).

Which Wabbajack modlist to choose is a personal thing, but Living Skyrim, Wildlander, or Aldrnari are s good start.
Living Skyrim - from ForgottenGlory has been going for ages and makes the world very alive.
Wildlander is pretty polished with it's own launcher etc. Does introduce more of a survival element.
Ardnari is mainly a "how many mods can we squeeze in without it all crashing" (2,000 or so).
    Plenty of others too. (edited)

Am I right in saying special edition is the best edition?

Does special edition run on Steamdeck?

I'm HAMMERING Skyrim on my Steam Deck right now. 100hrs so far.
This game and the Steam Deck are a perfect match for each other.

So standard and legendary edition are the ones delisted on steam? I still have that one, also have special edition, is it worth getting anniversary upgrade for 6.99?

How do you stop yourself running out of magicka time and again?

I can just about defeat a couple of wolves but pretty much anything more resilient than that, I end up dangerously exposed well before the enemy has been vanquished.

I know there are potions but going through a cave full of multiple enemies, I’d need dozens and dozens to prevent me running out.

Just seems pretty pointless being a mage, if I have to fall back on melee weapons for every fight.

What level are you? Use Enchanted items to boost your magic, and obvz level up!
Dont spread your skill points too thin.

Didn’t they automatically upgrade the older versions to the Special Edition?
I don’t remember buying the Special Edition, but I own it

Good for you! They gave out the non-special edition like confetti, but the tight wads don't upgrade you to the special edition. Not sure how you got your edition, but great that you have it.
