Would the x2 or x3 series supremely trump this?

If you want the extra two channels for a full 5.1.4 dolby atmos setup (or even 7.1.4 using the two pre outs) then you'll want to go for the x3700 (or the recently released x3800 if you want to pay another 500). I've had the x3700 for about 18 months and it's amazing.

Hey guys, apologies if this is an obvious question 😁 I have an old Denon avr-x540bt from back in 2018 or so. Other than being able to add an extra 2 channels and 120hz at 4k are there any other benefits with upgrading? Would the sound be better on a newer model or just the same?
    Viva_Elbonia's avatar
    Viva_Elbonia
I'm guessing but I wouldn't imagine the sound quality would be massively improved. 2018 wasn't that long ago and that still looks like a tidy AVR to me. If you don't need the extra features like 120Hz and the extra channels it probably isn't worth it. I went from an old analogue amp to this as it was a big upgrade with the modern gaming and 4k TV.

Noob question here folks. I see specs mentioning 120hz @ 4k. I was under the impression that refresh rate affected video rather than audio, is that not the case? Or am I missing something? To the effect of the AV doing the video processing rather than the TV from say, a PS5?

I've been thinking about getting an AV for years but it just seems such a minefield of tech to learn about. I do game so being up to date with latest gen consoles is a must for me (I appreciate this particular AV supports them).

Sorry I'm not expert (even though I've had an AV receiver for several years lol) but also a gamer and so I can tell you that the sound from a decent AV receiver and 5.1 speakers is miles better than you get from the TV speakers or from a cheap soundbar.

You plug all your consoles TV boxes etc into the amp and then a single HDMI back to the TV (great if you wall mount the TV and just more convenient than having HDMI cables sprouting out of the TV).

If you have the latest consoles this amp should passthrough 4K120 so you'll get the best picture possible in theory. At the minute my old amp can't do this so I have to plug the consoles into the TV hence the need for a modern amp.

Nowadays the amps have voice control too (Alexa etc) and Bluetooth etc so no need for a HIFI in the lounge really.

I found this that might help too and explain things far better than I can..

Note: This purchase only comes with standard manufacturers warranty of 2 Years.

The ridiculous thing with Peter Tyson is that they only do 5 year warranties on purchases that are direct from their own website, excluding the likes of sales on Amazon and eBay. The irony in this is that if you purchase from their website using paypal (I did with paypal credit) the sales invoice comes from ebay@petertyson anyway.

I was going to get this very receiver on eBay but wanted the 5 year warranty. Upon using their webchat and asking if they price matched their eBay price, they won't. Understandable I guess as the discount is funded from eBay.

They did however after asking because I could not find any discount codes to use whatsoever offer me a whopping £10 (less than 5% off) discounted refund on the £479 purchase price, so I got it for £469 with 5 year warranty. Hardly setting the world of bargains alight, but the current state of financial climate and cost of AV receivers being sky high is still a 'deal'.

I do however keep on getting bombarded by emails from Peter Tyson now though asking me to review my purchase, I don't have the heart to reply sarcastically about their 'generous' first order discount, or their convoluted 'free' extended warranty cover.

Personally think I would prefer to buy from Richer Sounds, but their equivalent of this is the inferior AVR-S760H which is nearly £200 more. As far as I am aware it is only Peter Tyson that are stockists of the AVR-X1700H.

Oddly, Peter Tyson were removed from HUKD for self promotion, how come they are now back? (edited)

I've updated the OP to make it clear this has the standard Denon 2 year warranty.

Maths by no means my best subject but looks like you paid £62 more to get an extra 4 years warranty. A judgement call at the end of the day. But I agree, it would be better if PT offered the same warranty no matter where the product was sold, especially if they are charging the same price. (edited)

Is it worth paying the extra for built in dab?
    apukdcfc's avatar
    apukdcfc
I'm still amazed most receivers still have AM/FM radio...WTF?!?

If I was getting this id get the DAB version even if it's slightly more.

I listen to football on the radio (local BBC) and internet radio doesn't allow match commentary. I appreciate this is a niche requirement tho and internet radio will suffice for most

I have one of these, bought when it first came out. Used in a 5.1 set-up with PS5, XbSX feeding an LG B55 OLED with most streaming subs.

When it works it is incredibly good, Dolby Atmos content is completely immersive and beautifully balanced. I had to replace my front speaker as it was too weak and dialogue was sometimes difficult to hear. With the new Polk (XT30) front speaker as a replacement, it now all works perfectly.

HOWEVER, I have had to send it back twice now in just over a year for repairs after it crapped out on me and I am still getting the odd source change and auto switch on glitch. Neither of my RMA failures was explained to me although I think one may have been caused by bad speaker wiring by myself. The other seems to have been some sort of circuit board burnout. In both cases Denon/Sound Unlimited (?) support was excellent in taking me through detailed troubleshooting. So make sure you check and double check your wiring and also your speaker impedance. Also do go through the Audessey set up - it made a vast difference to me.

Edit: I should clarify I use this for gaming and streaming only (edited)

Did you buy thru Peter Tyson or Denon direct? Just wondering as PT only offer a 2 year warranty and wonder how they would handle repairs or tell you to go thru Denon

This is an excellent price. I paid over £500 over a month ago and don't regret it. Versatile and has a really nice sound quality. No issues with 4k 120Hz gaming. Using it with 2 floor standers plus 2 monitors and it's happily replaced my old Cambridge Audio amp. (I went for the version with DAB) (edited)

If you love quality sound in movies and music don't buy it. If you need a receiver with up-to-date features go for it.

A - if you are buying an AV receiver primarily for music that is not a smart move

    B - Denon needs calibrating

C - there is a reason Denon are very popular, they've been producing decent kit for a long time, so you're ridiculous dismissive statement 'if you love quality sound and music don't buy it' is hilarious. Even more so when you say you packed it up after a track your post has zero credibility or basic knowledge of hi-fi / AV

what people should be concerned with hdcp being upgraded, for instance i have a denon x-41000 cost nearly 2k at the time, guess what it's not hdcp 2.2, and there is nothing you can do about it except upgrade, try and sell it...probably a mountain of hifi avr's some where because of it, because of piracy we all suffer, or governments letting the film music empire ride rough shod over the consumer. firefold.com/blo…you (edited)

My 7 year old trusty Pioneer is still going strong, but I am going to sell it....all depends if your receiver is still doing what it needs to do for you. Unfortunately having to feed HDR directly into the TV and just rely on Arc (no e-arc), having to have two feeds from the UHD Player for audio/video and wrestling with the lack of DTS codec from LG TV's and owning a PS5 it was time for me to switch.

Tempted as my old Onky 607 is basically cream crackered with no display unless wait 20mins so as workaround had to basicakly go from optical to TV instead of HDMI to TV (but on top of that now have 4k tv etc anyway), Obv this introduces its own issues with sound, and loss of HD audio etc....sorely tempted....but at same time........it still works......so should I wait

Using Focal Chorus 817vs (( think that was the number) - and BK Monolith sub - so hopefully adequate for it (as I think the Onkyo was a bit underpowered etc even when did work)

I'm in a similar position, although mine's the Onkyo 507! Still works fine, but having to use optical is annoying and I'm sure a new amp would massively improve performance.

My question is more whether this is future proofing enough? Given I bought my Onkyo in 2010 I imagine I'll want my next amp to last for 10+ years. So should I be getting something that supports more than 7.2?

What sort of problems? I have a 2500 and have been pretty happy with it for about 4 years. Only recently has it started an issue with these little flashing white speckles all over the tv until I switch to another AV input and back. Happens at most once a day so not awful but I’m looking at replacing it anyway for an HDMI 2.1 unit. It’s not the cables by the way, I’ve replaced all of them.

Does this model have that “late night” feature where it can fake bass by filtering out the frequencies that penetrate walls? I’m in a semi-detached and quite like my neighbors. Would be nice to keep it that way 🙈

no casting from youtube on denons is a major downside, HEOs is s**te
also, if you like gaming and listening to another input for music while you game, this wont do that.
you will need a chromecast audio, or a hdmi to spdif box with a firestick / googletv stick
i think that may go for most AVR's,, you need audio via spdif / aux and video on hdmi.
    unless someone knows different
