I bought a used 8TB Exos from CEX last monday. Or at least, I thought I did! I got in touch with their cs department on fb and their "solution" was to cancel the order and have me re-order it (the last one in stock too) which I had little choice but to do. It was cancelled yesterday. Yippee! First time buying from cex and the first hdd I've bought in years - not a good start!

Are the surveillance branded drives any better or worse than a drive that's "optimised" for desktop use? I've read about people saying that WD's Purple drives are worth looking at - what about Toshiba's S300's? (Just looking for a 6tb+ drive for my new desktop - I'll be backing it up weekly onto a couple of smaller drives)

My understanding of the video stream optimised drives is that the optimisation is mainly in the [drive] controller not the physical mechanics of the drive, and has to be requested/enabled in the [host] controller of the surveillance device/PVR. It allows better caching of predictably interleaved streams and crucially the ability to ignore transient write errors that would otherwise fatally error on a normal drive.

It's an extension to the ATA specification, that if not explicitly enabled reverts to conventional operation. Many people advise avoiding these drives in the mistaken belief the features are permanently enabled, which would not be the case in a NAS, server or desktop. They're probably a perfectly good option depending on price.

Got one of these last time, drive was DOA, no problem returning it but couldn't get any kind of response to get them to replace rather than refund! Refund was prompt and no fuss at least.

Could probably have just got a replacement from Seagate?

Less than £221.50 once you knock off 3% topcashback and 4% uphold cashback. Thanks OP!

I really want to say thank you to the original poster for posting this deal. Ordered one.

These eBay vouchers seem to be the perfect time to buy hard drives.

    £13.225 per terabyte.

Flash is rapidly approaching 26 quid per TB. HDDs are insanely over-priced, and have been for years now. Even providing power to Seagate drives, with little significant write operations, means that you have a significant chance of total device failure after 3 years. The TBW figure for mechanical drives is now worse than flash.

This drive wouldn't be cheap at 150, given the clear downsides of the tech- but clearly HDD companies want the tech to go the same way as CRT displays.

Thanks for the heads up OP, I managed to snag the Seagate Ironwolf Pro 8TB for £145 after coupon.

Are these comparable to WD White Label?
    Minstadave's avatar
Yes or better because atleast you know what you're getting with these whereas the whites are a bit of an unknown.

I'd take these over the whites labels personally. (edited)

How are these for noise? Nas sits on my desk at the moment so quiet drives are inportant
    StewBucks's avatar
Looked this up and it seems they are pretty noisy. Disappointing as these are a lot cheaper than the wd reds.

Does anyone know of a cheap case or something to put more than a couple of drives in, like the small unraid box? I now have 3 to 4 drives, and the case I have will not last me if I need to add another one. Thanks

pulled the trigger ... hopefully that's me done hard drive wise for a while

    Looks like the price increased.
    qtweeder's avatar
yep, cynical stuff from ccl, they upped the price by the discount amount - thus negating a true discount - thankfully got in at the initial price. (edited)

Wow, mine arrived this morning, that was fast!
