I have had this from from new for about 6/7 months.
Its a great size, battery lasts long time, pictures and video can be amazing but its not quite a quick point and shoot camera, however it has so many options that you can get some amazing shots.
Its also waterproof, has a headphone jack, MicroSD card slot (I have 512GB in mine), Note: Burst mode shots will only save to Internal memory, but these can be moved to SD card after.

Its a great phone for the price, especially if you want something a bit different to everyone else.

For example, as you have experience with this Sony, how good is the stabilisation for video recording? Better than a s23 or a Xiaomi 13?

I received mine today in pristine condition. When checking the Sony warranty on services.sony.co.uk/sup…ker its still under Sony warranty till 13/02/2025

How were you able to check? The fields keep turning red when I press calculate after entering the model number and IMEI

I've had this phone for about 6 months and it's mostly great. Amazing battery, it could easily last 2 days. It's a nice size and weight compared to most phones these days. Great to have the headphone socket and SD card slot etc. and good camera with handy physical button to launch app and take photos.

The one downside I've found, and I'm not sure if it's just a problem with my device is that it seems a bit overzealous in killing tasks. For example, it sometimes kills the app that I'm listening to for podcasts, which is annoying. Apart from that it's great.

Just change battery management to unrestricted

BEWARE: For those who look to root their phone, just note you will lose DRM keys should you want to revert back to stock.
Unsure if these can be backed up on this phone prior to unlocking the boot loader
    sisqoboy's avatar
So, I am just about to get one of these. Planning to go via the magisk way. What is the downside if we lose the DRM keys?

Xperia 1 IV at this price would have been better
    manufan4eva's avatar
Slightly ridiculous comment. Thats like saying an iPhone 14 Pro Max would be a better deal at this price than a iPhone 14...

Received today. Build quality is far better than pixel 6. I like the width. The height looks a bit funny but I'm sure I'll get used to that.

Running accubattery to check battery health. Although they say at least 80% I'm expecting it to be close to 100% given its like new and presumably a customer return.

Performance and screen seem nice. (edited)
    watchmaker's avatar
Battery should still be very good even if it's only 80%. I can get 2 days out of a single charge.

Do you have to cancel the "goodybag" if you don't activate it?
    MrSwitch's avatar

    Yeah, stop it recurring
  8. muny321's avatar
Do I just need to activate the sim and then cancel it?
    David_MorganYPj's avatar
Yeah you can turn off the auto renew thing on the account online so you don't need to speak with them
  9. Tobargainornot's avatar
Worth switching to from a P30 Pro?
    Gamebear88's avatar
If it's camera orientated you're looking at it from, then it's a tough one. P30 pro is/was a point and shoot beast. This on the other hand, whilst point and shoot/auto are good, it's not as good as P30 pro.

However. Fettle with the settings and different modes and you can get some amazing shots.

Just be aware, this leans towards natural colours and scene. None of the heavy HDR/immediately Insta looks.

Every other aspect, personally I'd say it's an upgrade

Anyone report on battery %? (edited)
    David_MorganYPj's avatar
98% after a couple of charge cycles. I'm guessing it might increase further (edited)
  11. aruf's avatar
Sony is the last big manufacturer that has kept microsd and headphone jack support on their high end phones. The battery life is awesome on these too.
    plewis00's avatar
They deserve more recognition for giving the customer choice in how they use their devices. If they sold better, this would really make Samsung and the others rethink their strategy. I have not been excited for a Samsung in years now, even recent phone has been a minor incremental upgrade or rehash of an old model (slightly improved cameras, S23 and S22 Ultra were basically Note 20 Ultra refreshes...).
  12. little_green's avatar
8 gen Sd slot & headphone jack!!! Wow!!! That's rare these days

Just moved over from long time Samsung user to Sony Xperia, and it's been great so far. Hacked off that none of the top Samsung phones no longer have SD card support and got rid of 3.5mm jack some time ago is a pain. Been stuck using my S9 for last 5 years and was looking at a S20 as a compromise upgrade as still had SD card.

It was so hard to find a phone these days that still has SD card + 3.5mm jack but that also had a decent camera, but then i was lucky to find Sony Xperia after almost giving up searching.
The only downside i have found is taking low light pictures, and the LED light on the back is very dim compared to my Samsung phone.

The LED is dim if used as a torch, but for pictures it provides a less harsh washed out image compared to phones with super bright LED.
    Night shots cold be better

    Are these dual SIM?

Really nice sized phone, the 1 IV is great in use but the 5 fits into the hand better imo.
    Michaelwr's avatar
Find the 1 IV a bit too big for front jean pockets. Particularly with case on. Great screen tho.
  17. Jammy212's avatar
Not sure if to go for this or Pixel 7?
    David_MorganYPj's avatar
I find pixels work very well but for some reason I find them hard to like.

I'm sure I'll find the camera auto quality frustrating with this, but I'd rather have the odd great shot than consistently good results which never look natural.

Battery life on pixel 6 has dropped very fast.
  18. sisqoboy's avatar
Pretty decent offer. Hot! Love the microSD and 3.5 jack. Also, there is no notch or annoying camera hole in the screen is the main winner for me!
  19. DevilWithin's avatar
The stupid in me wants to buy this to accompany my 1 IV for reasons unknown...
  20. sisqoboy's avatar
Just received mine. As it says, like new. Pretty nice, small size phone, the one I was looking for ages. Finally!
I think this is the max I am willing to pay for a smartphone in every 6 years!

    Thanks

Many thanks. Ordered. Would've liked the green or white but at this price I'm flexible.

Been keen to move on from pixel 6 for a while for no good reason.
  26. muny321's avatar
Got mine yesterday and is in pristine condition 👌🏽
  27. Weirdfishy's avatar
Picked one of these up for a relative to replace a failing out of date budget phone. It's amazing, and I really love the form factor over my current beasty S22 ultra. If I hadn't spent so much on the Samsung only a year ago I'd be wanting one of these for myself.
  28. iehrgeizi's avatar
Good for the price but it's the one Xperia I've had a number of issues with.
    otak's avatar
How long you have it and what kind of issues you are having?
  29. PeacePipe's avatar
Very tempted, but the small screen and seeming lack of updates is a killer.
    DevilWithin's avatar
Lack of updates? My 1 IV got an update the other day and it's on Android 13.
  30. Jonzza's avatar
anyone know what sony's like for rolling out android updates?
    aearose's avatar
Been fine so far, currently on Android 13
Security update was 1st April 2023
Google Play System Update was 1 March 2023
  31. Mooney_70's avatar
It looks like it's a shared SIM slot if you want to add an SD card. Otherwise you can use Nano SIM and esim in it.
  32. Dealseeker33's avatar
great phone anyone had an issue with the keyboard on theirs? mine seems a little glitchy

Would this be a good upgrade over an lg v60? Thanks
    Gamebear88's avatar
If it's the MicroSD/headphone jack that you value the most, like the V60.

Just be aware whilst the DAC in the Xperia is good, it's not as good as V60
  35. muny321's avatar
How's this a replacement for my current s21?
  36. starman0147's avatar
Is there a version of this phone that has a dual physical sim slot?
    Gamebear88's avatar
Fairly certain there is not. Just eSIM/physical SIM + microSD
  37. David_MorganYPj's avatar
I must say I love the phone. Form factor, battery, screen and sound quality all great.

A bit overwhelmed by the video pro app but hopefully it's not as complicated as it looks.

Think this'll be my favourite handset to date!
  38. popolou's avatar
Cheers MrSwitch, been mulling this for a few days but just couldn’t resist. Still using my XZ1 Compact and it’s finally time to move on.
  39. Malice19's avatar
I got the 5 mark 3 from cex for £220 and I'm really happy with it, but was umming and arring to go for this as you posted just after i oredered it, but could not work out why this had lost the 4.4x optical zoom like the mark 3 has?

The only things i could see differently or better on the 4 was
Faster CPU, bigger battery, brighter screen, wireless charging, 12 mp front camera.

Have they sorted the CPU overheating on the 4 as that put me off a bit?

    Cheers (edited)
