Whats the difference between Cuprinol Ducksback paint and Cuprinol Garden Shades paint? Cost of 5L of Ducksback = 1 L of Cuprinol Shades at Wilkos

Ducksback is used primarily for rough wood like garden fences-it's thinner but is soaked up better by the rough wood due to its porous nature whereas garden shades is more suited to things like garden furniture so wood that's smooth, isn't rough & is going to receive a lot of use etc. I'm not sure of its consistency but as its for heavy use I'm assuming it's thicker, it also has more colour options than ducksback hence the higher price. Hi All,

I am currently in the process of making a large 2.0m x 2.4m x 0.6m garden storage shed out of some old stained plywood that I had plenty of supplemented by some new panels of plywood.

I would really like to seal/waterproof it as it will subject to our inclement weather - especially winters & would like to ask, would this stuff be suitable? If not, can anyone recommend me products that I can use on plywood to best protect please as I am a little lost on this part to say the least!

    Many Thanks!

To be perfectly honest with plywood, its going to be an uphill struggle to keep it from splitting falling apart outside. Even marine plywood doesn't last that long.

You can paint it in bitumen paint like they do with the bottoms of sleepers.

Fence paint won't really work. If you want to use ply. Build the roof bigger that the base so it provide some shelter to the sides and cover with shed felt. Use treated timber to keep it off the ground. Make sure to really cover the cut ends with sealer.

If you dont want it black, you could try someting like no nonsense sealer water repellant from screwfix.

Doesn’t last a year, three coats done and looks awful after the winter season

Remember as a kid this was the time of year that most of the dads in the neighbourhood drained the oil engine from their cars, replaced it and then painted the old oil on the fence. Damn it smelled nice when the sun came out. Theres a Bank Holiday job that that has gone out of fashion. Agreed the new fangled waterbased stuff is better for the environment but fades so quickly - especially if you want a dark black finish. Seems a direct correlation to all the comments under the deals for peat free compost too. Progress isnt always better eh?

like i mentioned above i put up with it like everyone else for a long time before i moaned to the company

perhaps if everyone complained to cuprinol about this stuff just not lasting 1 year let alone 5 they might actually stop making this p water and change the formula to something that actually does what they claim !

Looks great but not inside your car. Word from the wise, secure this in the car because when it falls over it will go everywhere.

Everyone who is saying that this stuff sucks, what would you recommend as a good alternative or something oil based that would actually last a fair few years?

I use the Harvest brown for a natural rich brown colour, I once used the Harvest gold and it looked like sick but thats just my opinion.

I find it really doesn’t wear well. After first applying a couple of coats last year I’m about to open up my reserves from last year and apply a couple of fresh coats. Looks good when first applied.

I did my garden fence using Nonsense Garden Paint, cost a bomb. But read on someones previous post it was very good. So let’s see… only did one coat too as it seems good and didn’t want to pay more for my big garden.

Homebase have the 3 for 2 offer, but it's not the same price as Wickes. It's £15 each at Homebase, making it £10 each providing you buy in quantities of 3!

Homebase 3 for 2 on outdoor paint

Wickes is a better deal if you only want 1 or 2 tins.

Not really, my entire garden fence was done with this about 5 year ago. It’s only now starting to show a bit of wear

I’ve used this via a paint sprayer. Nice colour but takes three coats and you need to redo it once a year to keep it looking good

Cuprinol shades is the best wood paint I've found, shame it's too expensive to paint 16 fence panels

what i use now , can be messy but lasts and allot cheaper lol, older panels may need a repaint or patching now and again due to old fence paint but still not a big job than doing it every year

Unless you like bright orange, avoid Autumn Gold. The Harvest Brown is a lovely rich brown colour.
