Tempting. Maybe a silly question, but can you use a mesh WiFi system with these mobile broadband routers to boost the signal around the house / through thick walls?

Don't do it - I had a 3 phone sim plan - they called me to offer me this for £20 a month unlimited - said I could return with no penalty if it didn't work.

They started work on the mast near my house - speeds dropped from 500 dload to 4 -within 10 days of having it.

I returned it in box - as new as they said I could for full refund etc - they never cancelled the contract - but I did cancel the dd as I was told to and nothing would be owed. They put a black mark on my credit file (never ever had any missed payment before) - this halted a mortgage that was about to be granted - they apologised and said they would give me a letter to explain to bank that I owe nothing and remove the bad mark (missed payment flag) - that was 4 months ago - never had letter from 3 - missed payment is still on my credit file - mortgage deal withdrawn.............now I'm going through the process of legal action against them - absolute shambles of a company.

I’m on this and at the end of the two year contract they will allow you to buy the router for £120. Definitely check your signal before going for it. I’ve had speeds up to 700Mbps and consistently above 400, but I am near to a mast. Unfortunately at the moment they have been working on that mast for 3 weeks and I’m getting intermittent service. Their only response is they don’t know when it will improve, I can cancel if I like, and to only ring back in a week if it’s still not OK!

Same in Dunstable - was mostly great on 5G for the first 12 months @ 600Mbps , now will only connect to 4G, site says maintenance but has done for weeks.

What number do you contact them on ? (edited)

I've had this for the past month while I'm waiting for fibre to be installed hopefully later this month.
I'm waiting for my 3rd hub to be delivered as the first 2 won't pick up 5g. Using the exact same SIM in the exact same place in my phone I get 500 Mbps download, but won't connect to 5g when in hub.
Technically team spent ages on phone but concluded it was a faulty hub again.
On their forums it's seems quite a few exchanges have taken place with this problem.
Luckily it's still ok picking up 4+ for now and I won't have it long. (edited)

This particular 5G router is prone to issues like stopping recognising the sim etc.....the ZTE and Huawei routers are much better IMO. (edited)

Signed up for this last week and have been very impressed so far. Now Broadband wanted to put my costs up to £23.50 pm for about 70Mbps. This consistently receives between 350Mbps and 420 Mbps whilst sitting in my living room. I reckon it will be two years at least before my development gets fibre, so a no brainer.

I had this, speeds were amazing but like the other guy service was intermittent for over a week or two. Cancelled within 30 days. They ask you to return the router within 4 days otherwise they would charge you, despite multiple calls, chats And service tickets I've not received a return label. There are multiple threads when you Google this issue but I haven't seen any yet where they bill you for failing to return it. I'm now either waiting for a return label/bag, bill or a call from their debt collectors.

In the same boat here, 3 times they said they sent a return bag yet I'm still waiting. Tried taking it into the 3 shop and they said there's nothing they can do as signed up online and not in-store. Extremely infuriating.

Edit - just tried again but went through the complaints department this time instead. I'll see if that way is any different or just more of the same.

Edit - the return bag from the complaints dept was sent out no bother, so if you're having trouble getting one try going through them. Mine has been sent back now and they've received it a week ago so just the wait to see if they cancel it properly now. (edited)

Not sure about the ones direct from 3, but I got mine off eBay and other than you having to manually fill in the APN details for any network other than 3, it works fine with any SIM.

And of course make sure you get decent signal with 3 before signing up!

I wonder how good it is if you gaming online in 5G network? I had 4G router couple of years ago. Speed was OK but ping in games like Battlefield could go up to 999 ,so I stopped play online.

It’s not great, I lived somewhere with no fibre. Max speeds of about 40mbps on broadband so opted for this about 2 years ago. Speeds of near 450mbps but the ping was terrible, I tried everything to get it down but thankfully I moved homes in the end and returned thi (edited)

    Don't do it!
Our router constantly drops out. We got a new one and I thought it may be been some dodgy firmware, so I disabled auto update... It forces through an update anyway, which broke the router so it drops out 4 to 6 times a day again. Very annoying.

Separately, our speed was 150Mb/s a few months ago. Now it's more like 10Mb/s.

Seriously, don't get this piece of junk.

I’m 6 months in and it’s been awesome. 120m away from a mast and getting 700+download peak and 160+upload peak. Download is always above 500mb and upload is always above 120mb. Ping always below 33.

I reckon it’ll get lost in the mail when I return it in 18 months

    KodaBear's avatar
    KodaBear
Yes. But you get that message if there is too much network congestion where you live. They stop selling more to prevent everyone slowing down too much.

If you REALLY want it, it can be overridden. But otherwise you should look at alternatives.

I really don't understand this, showing it's not available in my area but I do have 4g three broadband now and it's around 100 Mbps so surely this would just switch to 4g while 5g isn't available?

We get 5G signal but their map only shows 4G. I insisted on a 5G router and that package. They shrugged their shoulders and said well it’s up to you. Never looked back.

It depends where you are located in London what’s your 5G signal like. I am getting 900-1000mb 5G on iPhone but via this router only shows 280-360 on average. It spikes to 500 occasionally. You can connect external antenna to boost signal.

For online gaming it’s not ideal unless you connect via Ethernet cable to router.

Im able to get 5G on three at my home, being fortunate enough to be close to one of their masts, but placing my postcode onto the coverage checker shows i would only be eligible for a 4G hub.
Anyone else had the same or can explain why this may be? Is this router significantly different to the tech in my phone for them to refuse availability?
    KodaBear's avatar
    KodaBear
Either a 5G Network congestion issue, or you're on the edge of 5G Coverage and their checker suspects you'll only get good signal outdoors.

Can we expect similar speeds using this in the same location for home?

Have just moved home. Checking their postcode checker on their website all I keep getting is a something went wrong error message. Even if I try different addresses. Am on 3 mobile at present and I can get 4G with a 3-4 bar signal. Not after 5G speeds.

Am on Sky Broadband atm out of contract (house move in place) but was considering this as it’s cheaper.

Yes I know not everyone happy but I can find that with Sky also if I look online. People don’t always leave reviews when everything is working ok.

No landline needed. Cheaper. Surely it’s worth a try?

Especially with Sky keep telling me this re my broadband house move…twice now. Later date each time!

Three customer service really are something. Normal customer service kept promising to send it out a return bag for the router but would never actually send it so ended up having to go through complaints who did send one out. Router was sent back.

Now a month later I get an email saying they never received it and that time is up so I'd be liable for the whole contract, despite the tracking showing it was received. Today 2 phone calls where they claimed it's my fault for not sending it back then a chat with complaints again who finally managed to close the account for me.

You absolutely can't rely on the 30 day cancellation promise. If you do then be prepared for months of hassle sorting it out.
