Anybody have these are they any good?
    deleted2919055's avatar
yes. they're pretty good for the money. They are a licensed HAM radio though, it's not legal to use one without a license. Even on the PMR frequencies (although chances of encountering any trouble using it as a PMR are basically 0)

any recommendations for kids walky talky so i can check on them when they are out playing outside? say with a good range of 250 meters?
    deleted2919055's avatar
if it's just for the kids, at that range, look at Baofeng BF-T1 you can get two of them for £28 in the UK probably cheaper from China. They're license-free legal PMRs and can be tone coded (so you don't hear other people on the same frequency). Cute little buggers too.

Another option is the Retevis Retevis RB618 you can get a 3 pack on Amazon for £42 (edited)

Thanks op I’ve just gone for this! Never ordered anything from AliExpress before but worth a go on this deal.

I ordered a UV5R from the uk Baofeng store a few months ago and really happy with it. There is only a high / low power mode unless it’s the upgraded version.

PMR should be fine with this however, anything with a removable antenna and output power of 0.5w is technically illegal.

Make sure you order a programming cable with it as the default frequencies would probably get you in trouble. I’ve used Chirp to programme couple and it’s very simple. You can programme on the device but it’s a bit fiddly.

If you are wanting to get this to listen in then there’s quite a few frequencies to try including the ISS space ship that you can hear when it’s in the right orbit.

I’ve not done much on UHF but happy to answer any questions I can

I have this radio and a cable and Chirp. I tried many times to get it to talk properly to my bog-standard UK PMR446 walkie-talkies but it does not. Setting the correct frequencies not a problem but I have never managed to get the tone codes working. This means yes it can talk to a PMR446 but only on channel 0.

UV 5R is deservedly a popular and value-for-money radio but don't buy it thinking it will just work.

this was always a good deal, but you can now get the quahsheng UV5(k8) for roughly the same price and that is now the better upgrade of this! (edited)

I love AliExpress, you can basically buy the same stuff without the overpricing bit. Some things aren’t worth it, but majority are. It unfortunately became worth it less after we exited EU and they added U.K. tax to our total basket checkout still, love the website. And it’s really handy for inspiration and seeing new tech that I otherwise wouldn’t know existed. 😁

Baofeng offers a big list of models available. From what I have seen on YouTube, if you want a decent one (not sure which model exactly) it will cost around £40.

Looks interesting. As a complete beginner am I better off getting the one with the 771 antenna or the USB cable (or is there a way to get both?)
    bob-mk2's avatar
The USB cable is essential to use the radio.

The 771 antenna is an upgrade, but not a requirement.

How will people catch me if i was to buy two and start talking on it? Would anybody attempt to catch me? Why is it such a thing that it's illegal?
    mr_johnsie's avatar
Radio triangulation. If they read the strength of the signal is in three different locations they can work out exactly where you are. It’s a lot more difficult if you are moving around. You could get reported if you un advertedly interfere with a channel used by someone else. My friends transmit button interfers with his computer speakers even though they are wired, so it’s possible to interfere with peoples equipment. (edited)

can you transmit on gmrs with these?
    bob-mk2's avatar
    Technically, yes.

Legally: not in the UK, not in the US without a license and not in Canada.

some cheap products but they bombard you for ever with junk emails when you buy from ali express, very annoying.
    dcx_badass's avatar
I've placed thousands of orders and never get any emails except ones directly related to my orders. Perhaps you just need to tick the clear boxes to opt out of other emails...

The official UV-5R only has 2 TXP modes - low 1 watt / high 4 watt.
So no why this has 3 and the high is 8 watts

Can anyone recommend a good WalkieTalkie to use at music festivals?

    Glastonbury for example.

Would the Quansheng UV-K5 be suitable or no?
    swifon's avatar
If it’s a basic Walkie you need that’s on PMR446 look at the C50 mini on eBay. You can get it pre programmed from some of the sellers and a pair is quite cheap. Just incase it’s lost at the festival

Mine has arrived and perfect for what I want to use for - night fishing. It has a built in FM radio and whilst that's tuned in it also listens in the background for anyone transmitting, so my friend further along the bank can keep in contact at night. It also has a very handy built in torch, again perfect for night fishing. As it has a rechargeable lithium battery there is no hassle with battery drain and lasts all night switched on and chatting to others fishing. A perfect little gizmo for £15.
