Is there anyway to get the 16 gb ram for a discounted price?
    alexf's avatar

Unfortunately not as Apple only lets other retailers sell standard options. 16GB RAM is considered a custom upgrade at the Apple Store

    Good find OP!

Damn it! Wish it was the other way round. I would rather more ram

This is the RRP anyway in the US I don't know why they charge to £100 extra in the UK it doesn't line up with the exchange rate even taking into account tax.

Cost of doing business outside the US is higher. Just the way it is...

8gb ram in 2023 is ridiculous and not enough 16gb should be minimum end of it just apple being cheap
    gobble_bobble's avatar
    your comment is misleading

What you meant to say is that 8gb is not enough for YOU.

Don't assume that just because your use case demands more than 8GB, its not satisfactory for the vast majority of computer users.

They should have put 16gb minimum in this machine. Disappointing apple!

With the way Apple silicon works, 8GB on what is an entry-level MacBook is more than fine, believe me

Dear lawd, it has nothing to do with any magic sauce apple is selling you.

It literally works the same way as every other swap memory feature. Apple glued the memory closer to the CPU to reduce latency, that's it. They made upgrades impossible to increase profits, obsolescence, for no reason at all other than greed.

Lapping up anything their marketing team says is quite frankly embarrassing. Everyone should be thinking for themselves, not being dictated to by a multi trillion dollar corporation.

£1300 for specs that, CPU aside, are equal to a £400 Chromebook.

The only good value PC that apple make is the M1 Mac mini, and that's only when you buy them used for £350 on eBay.

Oh and about that £250 SSD upsell... They don't even use good NAND chips. The speeds on the 512GB model are equal to the most budget gen 4 SSDs that sell for about £40.

£210 upcharge, and that's NOT including the profit they're already making on the chips themselves.

Whilst this is all true. This will absolutely eat any £400, £600, £800 laptop alive. Put 16gb ram in this, there is barely anything else out there that will compete. So yeah, specs from apple are less important than competitors, the only thing that wings me up is 8gb ram.

recently on digital foundary they reviewed diablo 4 and noted that 8GB VRAM wasn't enough for ultra textures. rather than test any AMD card which come with 16 GB RAM or a 4070 TI which only has 12 GB RAM they tested 3 Nvidia (1060, 2080 and 4080) cards and blamed the game, not the cards. these people are disgusting.

don't be like Wichard and digital foundary
don't buy an 8gb Apple PC

Who buys any Apple product to play Diablo 4?

    Still 8GB for £1400?

    Awful spec for price

One of the fastest on the market, lol. Clearly never used one.

Tim Cook: How's that base spec looking?
Apple Engineer: Sir, we can add an extra 8GB of RAM for an additional £2 to the cost price.
Tim Cook (laughing all the way to the bank): Mark that up with an extra two zeroes and sell it as an optional upgrade!

Not just Apple. This is the Microsoft surface upgrade options. £270 for 512GB SSD!

This is the current education price at apple
  13. matlock67's avatar
Trolls are out, must be really fulfilling going round spamming with the same comments on every Apple thread.
It's quite simple if you think the specs aren't what you require just move on.
    Ali2021's avatar
Or they could just pay the extra to upgrade the ram/storage as most sensible people would do lol

People expect “pro” capabilities and performance in what is supposed to be an entry level “budget” model meant for the average person who will browse the internet, create some documents/files and watch some content. (edited)

Got curry’s to price match and use the 6% work vouchers to bring it down £1,213! Cheers OP

Even the mini-LED from the Pros would be nice! Hopefully one day they go in the same direction as the iPhone, transitioning their consumer line of products away from LCD to Mini LED or OLED

For those who can access Apple education pricing, this exact model is £1289 and you can upgrade to 16GB RAM for an extra £180 (so £1469) and/or to 512GB SSD for an extra £200 (so £1489 without the extra RAM or £1669 with).
    The_narrow_path's avatar
    £200 for a £2 ram stick.

for basically £400 more may as well get the 14" M1 Pro as it has double the ram, double the storage, a better screen and 120hz too. if your already willing to pay £1300, then another £400 isn't going to hurt especially for a much better laptop. I got the M1 air 13" ages ago and absolutely hated the screen so sent it back for a full refund within 14 days and got my 14" M1 Pro base model for £1750 a year ago from John Lewis and now I actually enjoy using my laptop. screen is the biggest seller for me, the extra ram and storage is just nice extras that I don't need but will make so I can keep this laptop much longer then if I kept the M1 air 13" that has the same ram and storage as the one posted here.
