Description
The World at War: The Ultimate Restored Edition is the definitive version of one of the greatest documentary series ever made. Each frame has been painstakingly restored and the audio enhanced and upgraded so that this is the best this award-winning series has ever looked and sounded.

Narrated by Laurence Olivier and first broadcast in 1973 when memories of the Second World War were still clear in people's minds and the war's veterans numerous, over 26 episodes this unique series assembled these recollections, together with archive footage, to create one of the most powerful and successful historical documentaries ever seen. The voices of those that fought, worked or watched during the war gave each episode a vivid sense of what it was like to be there and was the hallmark of the series.

Brand new to this DVD boxset for the first time ever: Hard of hearing subtitles, New widescreen presentation, 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound audio. Over 10 hours of special features includes: Brand new - Restoring the World at War - narrated by Sir Jeremy Isaacs, this feature explores every element of the restoration process, 11 features including the making of the original series, Photo galleries, Biographies Speeches and songs, Newsreels and maps.

Anyone know how [well] this is achieved? I recall seeing a DVD version of this series a while ago where it had literally been cropped top and tail to convert the original 4:3 to 16:9. As a lot of it is people talking to camera, it looked terrible with many missing the tops of their heads, ditto a lot of the film clips.

Edit: Maybe it was this version (edited)

Yeah this version is cropped in to 16:9. 'The Complete Series' version keeps the original aspect and that's the one you want. That said, for £4, if you can look past some cropping, it's still essential viewing. (edited)

Its like streaming video except you can own it, sell it, take it somewhere, and you don’t have to continually pay for it.

Excellent series, but Olivier could never pronounce Ukraine properly in it lol.

On the contrary, he’s one of the few people who says it correctly.

In the same vein, just because the majority of people pronounce Uranus a particular way, doesn’t mean it’s right

Great series, and if there they still have stock at the end of month (when I get paid), I'll be buying a few - for myself, my nephew, my niece and other younger members of the family.

As others have said. Nothing wrong with old docu's. This really is a pinnacle of television. Pity today's media is an absolute disaster of virtue signaling and cancel culture. Same for schools actually.

Arrived - the 16:9 version it absolute shambles, theres a doc about the remaster process and how the justified cropping it to 16:9 from the original 4:3. Will keep for the extras docs.

Its on archive.org, 2.4gb HD in the proper 4:3

It involves stripping some copy protection and then remuxing; there are tools online to do it but I can't post them here for obvious reasons. You can google it though.

A great series but this is the butchered so called restored version. The later Network edition is the one to get. The cropping is atrocious and often cuts people's heads off!

While looking into the Network version it appears they've closed down.

Amazing series and the great thing is many of the people at the sharp end of the war were still alive.
