We have a number of these. Once youve allowed them to calibrate they are really good.

Do these need to be connected to a router? Or can they just be used standalone and set via a phone via Bluetooth? My main reason for using just one is due to accessibility! How easy are the batteries to change!? Thanks in advance!?

They connect to your hive system, not standalone.

You can get standalone TRVs with bluetooth though, just not these

What is the range on these? I have Tado ones currently but some do not work because my house is solid brick and quite large.

I have around 20 of these in a large house with some thick stone walls. All work fine. You can also buy a hive signal booster or hive plugs also boost the signal if placed strategically and can sometimes be bought for around £25. I use 2 of these. (edited)

Are these noisy when they operate?

Slight low level 1 second whine whilst they open or close but certainly not loud enough to wake me up. It’s actually quite satisfying to hear it knowing they are all working.

I advise thinking it through a little bit, I'd say don't bother unless house is decently insulated. Since mine isn't room can feel damp from lack heating, can still set lower than active rooms I suppose but you could just do that with a manual valve and be done with. Not saying don't get it, but think it through a little bit more than I did better use is if different rooms need heating at different times/ days

My thoughts too. I hoped it was a 2 pack at least. And to benefit in any way you can't just add one or two as the rest of the radiators will fire up at the same time anyway. The return on income for one of those will surely be a lifetime.
To control my house I'd need to spend £520 for what will be very little savings per year.

just have plenty of AA batteries in the cupboard. As says, once calibrated, they are decent. You really need to go all in on these though if you want to save any money in the long run. Make sure you can control every room that you need covered (we just don't use in hallways).

Yep that is worth noting. No point just having them on a couple of radiators as all the others will turn on when you request heat to the Hive valves.

I took the plunge and bought a load of these last November and they have been great so far. Pick and choose what rooms you want to heat at what time or boost the whole house if need be. Partner on maternity leave at present so she was in the house a lot over the colder months and now have the ability to just boost certain rooms whilst leaving upstairs bedrooms off etc. Previously we were having to heat the entire house even though most the rooms weren't in use at the time.

Also can set rooms to maintain a temperature so the nursery is set to maintain a certain temp through the night to ensure its not too cold. Just had some renovations done and in need of another for an extra radiator we have installed so thanks for the post

Exactly what we do, little uns room stays nice and toasty all day every day but other rooms change based on our schedule.

Are they easy to self install?
    Guileuk's avatar

Really easy, come with various adaptors dependent on what TRV valve they are replacing and they have a help guide via QR code that tells you if you need to use the adaptors and how to do so based on what your existing valves are.

These used to get very bad reviews but I can see from the above that they are now getting some very positive comments. I think they have done a few firmware and app updates so maybe most issues now fixed. I also put these in my house earlier this year and have found them very good. Looking back it seems crazy that we used to hear all of our rooms whenever we had the heat on, rather than just where it was needed. Very happy with mine. Not had to change the batteries yet, but only had them six months. Only down side is that you lose the 'Ready by' program. It would be nice to have tha for every room.

I have these on all Rads, except the Towel ones, as they don't fit that type of rad.
Install was easy, calibration a faff for some rooms, for some reason.
Once up and running, it's been great.
We turned off rooms not using (though had to crank it on a few times in winter to stop the room getting too cold/damp). Being able to set the kids rooms to different temps has been great, as piling in more duvet/blanket and reducing the heating duration etc has most likely saved money (hard to tell as you con't compare when base gas prices keep changing)

We have them on our towel rails too but I guess it depends on what type of rad you’re using

Had these when they first came out, just never worked properly.  Wanted system to fire up the boiler (hive heating) to keep my office warm when the temperature dropped below that which it was set.  Just never did it.   Does anyone who has this know if this problem was sorted?
    MrFizzy's avatar
    MrFizzy
Sounds like you haven’t got ‘heat on demand’ enabled or some fault with your system. . This allows any thermostat to fire up the boiler rather than just your main stat.  If you enable it you lose ‘ready by’ but I think it’s worth it. I find it works very well.

Does the hive thermostat become redundant if all rads are fitted with these?
