    Could you take the drive out of two of these enclosures and use in a NAS drive?

    Ye called shucking, done it for years and years, depending on your Power supply in the nas/pc you'll need to either use molex to sata or block the 3.3v pin on the sata power connector otherwise the drives won't power up, easy to do with a piece of kapton or insulation tape, isn't the case for all power supplies but from my experience the majority need it doing.

    Due pulling the trigger on this, are they reliable? Read reliability issues on some wd recertified drives. I'd be using it to backup music.

    From experience you should buy two, not just for redundancy but for a donor drive if things go bad.
