Looking for a decent spec'd smallish laptop and wondered anyone with a 2k/4k screen would I really be notice against full hd ? just be using for general browsing some old games here and there.
    plewis00's avatar
Not really, you are paying a large premium for minimal gain. I have 2K and high resolution screens and you really don't notice much, but you do consume a little more power to drive more pixels. On a 13.3" display, full HD is more than adequate I would say. This laptop is a good choice for the money - it's well-equipped. (edited)

How come a lot of laptops these days seem to be using 16:10 resolutions now?
    basergorkobal's avatar
16:10 is becoming deservedly popular. It's much better for productivity and browsing with extra vertical resolution. 16:9 is better for movies and that's about it really.

Good price - don’t like how the ThinkBook tries to leech off the ThinkPad name a little but it’s still solid and well-built. Excellent spec for the money and new. That 5800U doesn’t hang about.

Be warned on the USB C charging, Lenovo laptops can be fussy on PD charge spec, I think they enforce 20V which is rare on power banks.

Yeah, I got the Anker Power Bank, PowerCore III Elite 19200 60W Portable Charger with 65W PD Charger, PIQ 3.0 Power Bank which is supposed to do 20v at 3.0A so should support it.

    Tempted by this.
I can't figure something out, the seller has 2 listings for this product, both with different SKU's, however I cannot see any difference on the Lenovo site looking at the SKU's on the Support section of the website. There will be a difference but I really cannot find out what it is.

    This one is: 20YA0074UK
    And the other is: 20YA002YUK

I couldn't work that out either so went with the 20YA0074UK.
The description for the 002 model didn't mention a screen type so maybe it's not IPS but wasn't taking a chance on it.

Great deal OP, the 5800U is still a great chip with 8C/16T. My overall feel for ThinkBook's are an enterprise series of IdeaPad like laptops, but with much better materials and build quality. I'd rather get one of them than a E/L series ThinkPad.

Simply, if you want a solid laptop, you can't go wrong. 16GB RAM is also a nice touch, with a 16:10 display not seen on many budget laptops. Imo, it's a must for smaller laptops as it makes it more pleasant to use. Can't go wrong.

Disassembly video shows 1 DIMM slot, with storage upgrade options. So 8GB is soldered, but you can always add a 16GB stick to get 24GB.
    plewis00's avatar
That is quite handy on a 13" laptop, though asynchronous/flex RAM may be more of an issue, 16GB should be ample for a while.

As someone said below, the RAM appears to be fixed:

The Gen 3 has onboard memory, no DIMMS. The notebook check review linked above confirms this.
    plewis00's avatar
You’re right, RAM is fixed and LPDDR4x.

Probably would have bought if it wasn't for:

    1. M.2 2242 SSD.
    2. Fairly noisy.
    basergorkobal's avatar
Thanks for the info. I'm really interested in this lappy for my missus.
2242 standard SSD don't bother me much. 512MB is plenty.
But fan noise is worrying. Is this your first hand experience, or can you link to the source of this information?
    Thanks

Wouldn’t recommend this, 16 bytes of ram in 2023 might be a bottleneck

I wouldn’t recommend one with 16 bytes even back in the eighties by just spotted the typo lol.

Assuming you meant 16gb, not sure how much of that is a problem, given that there are plenty of laptops being sold with just 8gb.
It really depends on what you’re thinking of using it for, browsing, office apps and photoshop will work on this spec. Yes it’s a downside that it’s fixed in place and can’t be upgraded but the price of this and portability vs a lot of other laptops out there is hard to beat imo. (edited)

Heat added. Great price for a strong processor, good amount of storage and ram
  10. lmulli's avatar
If this had 2 x Dimm slots and option to add additional SSD, I'd be all over it as I need a new laptop ASAP, but I want to use my existing 32GB ram (2x16gb) and additional 2TB SSD.

It turned up today and I had really high hopes for it, however the fan noise is relentless! I've never heard something with such an annoying fan profile. The fans never seem to go off and it makes and drone type sound, then do anything at all on the computer and they ramp up and down constantly. (edited)
