Found a code that gives you a yearly subscription to blinkist.com for £18.

I’ve had the trial and quite enjoy their summaries for those times where you have 20 minutes spare.

I've never heard of this before. Can someone briefly explain what it's all about. Seems to contain 6500 books but they all appear to be less than 15 minutes long? Are they just small snippets of an audio book. So you then go on to buy the full book?

The gist is that they summarise books for you as audio and written. So you listen to a 20 minute or so summarisation of the key concepts/ideas.
It’s partly because a lot of non-fiction books are kinda 80% anecdotes and waffle with a few core ideas. This is a frustration I have had and Blinkist solves. I can spend 20 minutes on a book get the idea and if I need to know more I’d go out and read the whole thing (not included).

Wasn't their a vpn trick with this before to get this even cheaper

Good spot. I just signed up via an Indian VPN for ₹900 (£8.40) using the discount code. Thanks (and to OP as well).

Never used this but I ask ChatGPT to do this for me, writes a good summary.

I've done the same but there's a difference between 3 paragraphs and a 15 minute synopsis.

What's putting me off is it's non fiction only and only 6,500 titles, 95% of which I'd probably have no interest in anyway. I like the idea though.

On a side-line, I'd love to be able to talk to ChatGPT via Bluetooth and ask it things like this when the phone screen is switched off. I know there are a few ChatGPT clone apps that use CGPT & The Bard as their back-end but I haven't discovered any apps you can talk to. If anyone has a suggestion I'd be all ears. I'm an Android developer and still haven't solved the screen off problem, only Google apps seem to have this permission but Sony headphones can also communicate so there must be a solution.

Thanks OP and Sydney-Steve, used VPN and got for 900 Rupees for the year. Remember to turn auto renew off

Is there any way to see the list of books before you sign up? Don't want to spend money then find there's nothing relevant/interesting to me.

What a fantastic find - thank you. Absolutely love blinkist - was a member when it first started and have paid over the years but had to cancel as I didn’t have the money any more.

any idea what the renewal will be? (edited)
    Dreamz743's avatar
I took the deal and immediately went to switch off the auto-renewal ("cancel" - it continues until the 12 month period ends). Got offered 50% off when selected 'too expensive' as reason for cancelling.

Is there a similar app/service that summarises fiction books?

I’m just not sure it would work well tbh. If I tried to sum up fellowship of the ring in 20m it would probably just be crap.

Daft question but where/when do you add the code?
    PenkyDave's avatar
There’s a link on the subscription confirmation screen

Thanks! I had a year trial once. Never used it until I got a reminder that I'll be charged the following month. Gave it a go, and was hooked! Spent 20 days trying to consume as much as possible!

    Thanks for posting the deal.
Have heard about Blinkest for ages on "Pens Sunday School" podcast, but I enjoy podcasts for many and paying for Blinkest was just not THAT appealing.
Have signed up now, as this is the type of price I'm happy to pay for the amount I'd actually use the service.
I wish more companies would realise you actually get a LOT more customers by setting the pricing at a level where people say "sure, why not" as opposed to "not sure I'd use it enough to pay that much"

Never heard of it. Signed up for a year. Thanks OP!

Thanks op, I've signed up. I often listen to non-fiction on audible and by the end of the book I'm thinking the author could have got the key points across in a few pages.

It looks like an additional 'guest account' is included with the premium subscription so you can share with one other person. The other person can create their own account on the plan. (edited)

I couldn’t work out whether you could only share your ‘spaces’ rather than full access. But not sure.

How long does this code last? I'd like to try this before purchasing.
  15. alexmurphy01's avatar
    Doesn’t work?

Edit: DOES work, I was trying to discount the monthly.

Took a while to update my account on the app (I had this for a few years but went back to free), but kicked in eventually. Top deal, thanks! (edited)

Worked for me. I was tempted in the past, but fifty-odd quid a year was too much. At £18, I couldn't say no!
  17. KamalinO's avatar
Interesting app. Has anyone been using it for a while and can share their experience?
I'm mainly interested in science, big data and AI books, and I'm wondering if such short summaries would still provide new information.

BTW, looking at the title, shouldn't it be Blinkist and not Blinkest? (edited)

Interesting how it supposedly begins with a free trial but takes the payment immediately!

Do you still get the free trial with this code? It says 14 day money back guarantee which I assume is probably the same anyway

Are they written or audio summaries?
    Drasrb's avatar
    Both
  29. TonyFresco's avatar
Sounds like an interesting idea.  Do they have a good selection of popular nonfiction books, or is it generally the lesser known ones?
  30. KayDeeDance's avatar
Good price, decided to give it a try. Thanks

Thanks - I’ve ordered. Apparently I already had an account? I think I might have signed up in the past just to be on their mailing list for cheap books.

Forgive my ignorance but couldn't you just watch a YouTube video summarizing the book if you aren't sure you want to buy it?
    SeanRTK's avatar
If you can find a summary of 6500 books on YouTube then I'm sure it'll do the same thing. You will have to listen to adverts though and keep the screen on, unless you have YouTube premium. This app allows you to read the summary and listen to it. Seems to be worth £8.50 for the year.
