It's not bad if you have some half decent weights on the base (I used some spare slabs I had to rest on top).

I bought it a few weeks ago at £57 so I've reordered at £40 and will return the old one

50611620-uiYcu.jpgThat's my DYI solution. Barrel £35 on eBay, some concrete inside and heavy duty swivel castors £10 for 4pack at Screwfix. It's about 80kg+ and reasonably easy to move

Problem with any of these types of parasols is the amount of floor space the base takes up and how obnoxious they look. There is a reason why the photos never show them with weights in place.
And then if you want to move it it's a PITA to move all weights etc. (edited)

2nd pic shows it weighted down. I guess if it showed weights on first pic, people would expect weights with it!

Thanks OP - does anyone have any cover recommendations?

I'm currently using one of these.

Cantilever Parasol Cover Waterproof, Fit for 2.5m 2.7m 3m 4m Patio Large Overhanging Outdoor Parasol,600D Oxford UV Resistant Windproof Garden Umbrella Cover with Zip Black : Amazon.co.uk: Garden

Been exposed through one winter and seems to be holding up ok. From experience with my patio heater and garden furniture any outdoor cover tends to get weathered eventually so I've tended to now balance cost against knowing they have limited life-spans From wear on this one looks like I'll get at least 2 more years out of it, so no complaints so far at the price.

Make sure you buy the base weights too, it will fall over without them.

I used one of these as a ground spike... Dug it below lawn height and is excellent. ebay.co.uk/itm…782

Any chance you could share a pic of how your umbrella fits onto the ground spike please mate?

Fine if there's zero wind but a bit naff in the slightest breeze. Even if you weigh the base down the cantilever arm will twist and damage.

I love mine. But alas it’s true. Slightest wind and it’s gone. I tried tying the parasol spurs to the day bed, but the arm still twisted. It only takes one gust to break it. I agree a vented large parasol is better. The other thing is it’s huge and heavy. So I struggle to store it in winter.

No NI delivery. Not that we need shade from the sun here as it hasn't visited for a while. May make a good rain umbrella?
    Nesima's avatar
Umbrellas and Parasols have not been invented yet in NI, we are not allowed to interfere with the societies development there.

Base weights tend to be expensive. I just got six concrete blocks from B&Q for around £11.

I did use slabs at first but the plastic weights look better and are less of a trip hazard for the kids
