sorted byRe above it is true. The Olympic hit the Royal Navy Cruiser HMS Hawke which had a ram on its bow.
It was the Hawkes fault, but you can't win against a Government so they blamed the Olympic and so the insurance did not pay out to fix it.
The Olympic had broken its back hit on the starboard side below the water line.. They tried to fix it, but it did not work. The White Star line would have been bankrupt .
So they came up with the plan of an insurance con, to switch the Olympic with the Titanic.
They also chartered another ship (the rescue ship) loaded with blankets, etc which was supposed to rescue everyone, that sailed then stopped waiting for the signal.
Incidentally the Titanic ni Olympic was also on fire when it left Southampton. That's why the Captain was steaming so fast to burn off some of the coal as they could not put the fire out.
Also one of the life boats in the water was from another ship, so there is a theory that it never hit an iceberg it hit another ship. The hole from the " ice berg " was really the weak point from the original hole in the starboard side from collision with HMS Hawke. (edited)
