    Cracking laptop and price.

I work in a place that offers Surface devices (pro, go, laptop, laptop go) to our staff. Out of the 300 devices I've had, I'd say less than 5 have had broken screens over a 3 year period.

The most common fault with them is the chargers which is covered by warranty.

This is purely my own experience in an enterprise but, when compared with Lenovo 2 in one devices that had screens thinner than paper, these are solid. Did just get a new laptop 5 from work. 😁

I quite fancied this but the chip is much slower than the one in the laptop go 2, right? With it approaching September we should get an announcement of a 3rd gen shortly too

Also from the specs I saw the ram in the 1st gen is also miles slower than in the second

I will say I saw the Go 2 in John Lewis and it’s a lovely form factor (edited)

The processor in the Go 2 is 1 year newer and .60 GHz faster but the cost of the Go 2 is £729 and that’s with 8GB RAM (not even sure if that’s upgradable either). This has 16GB. Both seem to be LPDDR4x.

Go 3 is due towards the end of this year I believe. Probably hence this price. (edited)

Can this be used for light gaming like a PUBG?
    PsychoSonny's avatar
Pubg isn't light gaming and no you need at least a £1k laptop to play games as it will need a dedicated GPU. Sure you can get some for a bit cheaper but not as cheap as this laptop. You need something with at least a RTX 4060 preferably 4070

Q3'19 was the date of this cpu launch. That makes cpu almost 3 years old. Other than that nice laptop.
    plewis00's avatar
Almost 4! The i5-1035 had 3 versions and this is the G1 (the slowest graphics version...), 10th gen was basically Skylake 6th Gen refined many times over, not a bad CPU and probably fine for a second/third machine but miles behind the latest chips or even the 11th Gen in the Laptop Go 2.

Though the Surface Laptop Go is one of the better compact laptops on the market, especially if you want something different to the usual ones. (edited)

Decent student laptop. Fan noise can get obnoxious though.
    steveyboy79's avatar
Have a Surface Laptop 2. No fan noise issues at all. Appreciate it's a different CPU, age, build quality etc but is fan noise on the Laptop Go really a problem? Genuinely interested because if this deal came up again at same price or less I might consider. Thanks.

Great laptop, got this for £300 with Italian keyboard from a previous deal on here. Minimal differences to UK keyboard.
Handles things well and fast for lightweight. You'll hear the fan spin up with intensive tasks.
The brightness is good, but you'll notice a slight difference with pixels due to lower resolution.
    All tolerable for the price/performance.
    Fingerprint works well.
Can usb-c another monitor to have dual screen.
Recommend buying a sleeve for it off Amazon.
Keyboard is great to type on but no backlit.
Can handle non intensive lower end games quite well. (edited)

Correct me if I am wrong but the 128 and 256gb versions are SSD not EMMC. I’m sure I saw that was upgradable. RAM is soldered and not upgradable but 16GB is plenty for office use given this price point.
  8. Fonsocruise's avatar
If you want a crappy screen, low ssd space and Ok performance go for it.
    seskima's avatar
It's not a crappy screen by any means? It's better than most laptops in this price bracket by far, and it has a unique 3:2 aspect ratio, perfect for web browsing.

256GB is plenty for most people, you can also upgrade it if you're tech-minded.

Performance is just okay though I agree there.

The real standout is the build quality and the portability, small and light is perfect for travelling.

This or the HONOR MagicBook 15 for a student?
    plewis00's avatar
I'd take the MagicBook, it's a more fully-fledged system, this is a compact and lightweight laptop - not a bad choice if needed to take around lectures all-day though. The MagicBook is probably much newer hardware and faster too.

Photo editing yes. Video editing will struggle.

You really want the Go 2 as the CPU is far quicker. The 10th gen CPU in this is quite dated now, it has slow graphics and not really worth £400 even though this is the very rare 16GB spec model (business only)? I do like these machines but quite low display resolution (it is noticeable) and no backlit keyboard are a bit annoying. Keyboard is really good though.

I decided that might have been harsh - the value in this deal is the RAM and SSD which is a business-spec option only, consumers are limited to 8GB and 128GB SSDs, this is a clearance system but it is brand new so not terrible value but the CPU is way behind. (edited)
    FieldMarshal's avatar
Very difficult to please some!! CPU is no bells and whistles but low power and ideal for portable laptops. Most people down need that higher computing mileage touted by you. This 10th Gen processor will pretty much handle low and medium computing demands of most users.
  12. FieldMarshal's avatar
Perfect size laptop at 12.4 inches. Could be better at 12 inches on the dot or slightly less but this will do. This is what I’m talking about when you need a ‘laptop’ . Processor is OK for what I need it for and You can carry this all day, jumping trains and navigating through airports. Thanks. Gonna take a punt as my Lenovo is on its last leg. (edited)

I grabbed a laptop go 2 used liked new for £380 but when it came I noticed that the track pad is quite loose..a common problem occurred to many items as I saw in forums .
Finally managed to keep it and accept a refund on £150 for this .. I hope it will last long without any problems as I love it ..is simple ,portable ,strong enough and love the touch screen

I looked into updating the SSD on the 64Gb version of these, while technically possible I believe you have to take the entire laptop apart to access it which is tricky to do without breaking any of the plastic clips holding the base on as they're really fragile. Probably voids the warranty too.
    arsenalbates's avatar
    Author
The 64GB version is EMMC. I don’t think that’s upgradable however the 128Gb and 256Gb models use the traditional m.2 slot.

Thanks My Surface Laptop 2 with it's 8gb is starting to show it's age a bit, this'll come in handy as a stop gap until I can raise the funds for something better

Why not just get a lightly used Surface Laptop 3 or 4? (edited)

This or an MacBook Air M2 for a 13 year old boy that needs to take it around all day for classes? I already got the MBA M2 from apple refurb for £750 which is cheap but still seems overkill and can easily get smashed up.

Battery life and weight is important as needs carry and last all day. (edited)
    Nigel_Tufnel's avatar
Air M2 is by far the superior laptop on all counts, but it's reflected in the price. (you won't get an Air M2 for remotely close to 400 quid) (edited)

I bought the newer version for £384 refurbished back in may. It's a great device overall.

Great build, good performance, nice keyboard, nice screen. The battery life is mediocre compared to higher end laptops though, but then again it's fair bit cheaper on offer.

Think of it as a midrange laptop in a gorgeous, light and portable build. Can't really go wrong for this price, just consider buying an extra charger (or a 65w PD charger) if battery life is a concern.

why are people still buying intel laptops when amd are known for way better power efficiency and as such more battery life
    FieldMarshal's avatar
What world are from? Intel laptops are more power efficient with better heat management. Also don't forget the driver issues with AMD CPUs.
