I'm currently with Virgin and fed up with their price increases. I mainly use internet for music streaming and Netflix - do you think this would do the job? Was thinking of getting a Smarty SIM because I get decent 3 reception at my house.
    greenant's avatar
    Music, yes.
Netflix, yes if it's 1080p. A maybe if it's 4k streaming, but should still be fine.
I use a 4g router for these kinds of things (music, 1080p video) and it works fine. Though my 4g router is 300mbs instead of 150 and I use an external antenna. Not that I'm getting the 300mbs. Even 100mbs is more than enough for these kinds of things. Heck, i think 1080p video only uses 5mbps. As far as the upstream speed goes, these routers can sometimes be better than fixed home broadband, because up vs down is much more symmetrical. With Virgin broadband the upload speed is about 10% of the download speed, but with these cellular modems the upload speed is just as good as the download speed.
If you can stretch to a faster 4g modem or even a 5g modem then all the better, but it's not essential for your use case.
The only reason i'm still using a 4g modem is if i switched to a 5g modem then i'd need a 5g antenna too, and they can be more expensive than the router itself.
Ironically, the external antenna doesn't always mean a better connection, because it can mean connecting to a mast further away which is actually slower than a closer mast. So I'd just use the built-in antennas first and only try external if needed. (edited)

Mm. When I'm bored over the cold days of winter, might give this and the old Pi a go! Thanks

If you wanted a full time home router, I would recommend you spend a bit more for a much better device - get a Huawei B535 from eBay (if you don't mind Huawei!).
They go for about £25-£50 second hand.
Has double the max download speed at 300Mb/s (Cat 7 LTE), supports more devices, and also has 802.11ac dual WiFi bands of 2.GHz and 5 GHz.
The internal antenna are pretty decent as well. (edited)

I second this. It's what I do. A B525 in my case but pretty much the same device. Just don't expect to use the phone socket feature because while its in use (even when just ringing) it switches from 4g to 3g. Other than that, it's been good.

ive just had this arrive today and works a treat , i have O2 . Only issue i had was getting my sim card to locate in the socket, after several attempts i managed to get it to work and solved my issue with crap virgin

Quick question. I have a Lyca Unlimited esim on my phone which I was about to use as a hotspot for my home internet needs. Could I get a physical esim on the same number and use it in a router like this, concurrently?
    TravellerAsh2000's avatar
I have not heard of any network bar Orange ever offering multiple Sims for the same number. When Orange was around they used to have a shared SIM plan which was the same number on multiple devices. Can't remember how it worked.

Hi. How would this compare to the Three 4G router?
I tried to order the Three 4G+ router today but it’s out of stock.
My new address Three say they don’t supply Home Broadband to (they wanted me to get a mifi router) but I used a different postcode and they sent the 4G router to my new address. Will see how that goes tomorrow when I set it up.

Just wondering if this one would fair ok? My 4G mobile signal is decent.
    Thanks (edited)
    sadsacdeals's avatar
Probably would be similar. Btw you can get the Three 4g+ router on eBay pretty cheap, would probably be faster

Bought! It was delivered today. Absolutely useless! Intermittent signal and speeds worse than using my old Samsung galaxy S8 on the hotspot. Definitely should have paid more for better quality

I should have known they where over compensating with a name like “Strong”

Just an update on my use of one - works a treat, much more signal strength than using a phone/tablet as the SIM carrier.

I'm getting over 30 Mbps consistently with it upstairs (2rd floor) in a window pointing at the nearest mast.
Downstairs by the front door, that falls to about 17.

Bearing in mind that the phone line gives only two and a bit (distance from the box is pretty much at the limit) - I'm rather pleased with that. That's on both Vodafone and Lybara.

It's being used by the front door to link the Ring doorbell to the internet. Working FAR better than a phone or tablet managed. Really good quality video.

Or just use an old phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
    Alex_H's avatar
This will likely give a much better WiFi range than a phone due to the chunky antenna. Depends on what your requirements are.
  13. Gwern_Tudur's avatar
We have one for use in the caravan. Good range and very comprehensive web interface. Was able to use sims not meant to work on 4g routers by changing APN addresses. Bargain at this price.

    Is this china product
    Wut's avatar
Considering the vaaaaast majority of tech is made in China I'd be more surprised if it wasn't

This is a cat4 router, you will not get 300mbps at all.
    thehotwombat_'s avatar
300Mbps on the WiFi and 150Mbps on the download.

Wi-Fi 4 is slightly outdated. Currently on Wi-Fi 6 which is superb compared to 4&5
    Alex_H's avatar
Very true but your really limited to the speeds of 4g on this, so technically won't benefit from anything faster than WiFi 4.

Heat added. I'm hoping that it will replace an old tablet that I tether a Ring doorbell to.

That is a MiFi device, so no ethernet ports. You can get the exact same as a Mifi by simply setting your mobile phone as a mobile hotspot.

this look very similar like the Tenda 4G680 V2.0 that I have.. While the Tenda has an RJ11 port behind and this doesn't, I wonder if one could solder an RJ11 port behind.
    jewelie's avatar
Do you really mean RJ11 (phone line / ADSL / VDSL) and not RJ45 (wired Ethernet)?

Tested this again tonight. EE 34 mbps constant HD streaming on 2 devices, one over powerline. Was positioned by an upper window. Very impressed for the price, thinking of ditching cable broadband!

Is that an Unlimited data EE sim?
