Ok, so just tried this, yes it does increase bass and volume but destroys the audio by using some serious overuse of multi band compression (think ott on steroids).. Compression is very good at making things louder at the expense of dynamic range (the difference between quiet and loud sounds) It is so overused in modern music and tiring to listen to, I would even go so far to say that most audio from the 80s actually sounds better because of the dynamics.. Look up "loudness wars"..

Spot on, this is also why a lot of people prefer the sound of vinyl as it's more dynamic and less compressed. Also check out to see which version of your favourite album *may* sound better as is less compressed. Unless you prefer the sound of compressed music. I love the stereophonics but I can't get over how loud and compressed their albums are now I've noticed.

proper audio enthusiasts whinging, well if they were real audio enthusiasts they wouldn't be listening to anything from a phone

Naw today's phones are capable of amazing things. You have great DAC support on a phone even from 10 years ago.

Just need to know what physical headphones to use, understanding file types eg lossy (MP3) vs lossless (FLAC) etc and then to understand EQ settings and you can get amazing returns

For example. For high end sound on a phone:

1: Get the Tidal cheap subscription via Argentina as seen on HUKD for 1:1 studio quality sound.

2: Have a pair of Sony WH-XM3 headphones or similar.

3: Enable the best connection type between phone and headphones (LDAC)

4: Calibrate the best sound manipulation using touted apps such as Wavelet, Poweramp, Viper4Android, REQalizer FX - search YouTube for preferred settings etc.

5: Enjoy great quality sound for a fraction of the price of getting far more expensive equipment. (edited)

For proper sounds enthusiasts, Viper4Android is the way to go but it needs your phone to be rooted.

Outside that, try Wavelet or for a system-wide one, try RE Equalizer FX.

Or also try the standalone Poweramp equaliser, which is also system-wide

Search YouTube for reviews and further information on best setups etc. (edited)

A five band EQ is a joke- a really really bad joke. With a decent number of bands, you can adjust output to your hearing and preference. And this is especially useful for older audiobooks that were originally records or tapes.

You can select 10 band EQ from settings

    Any good Eq's for android?

    Wavelet or RE Equalizer FX

The latter is a system wide one with lots of features but you have to pay for it. (edited)

    It's a fair price 👌

What is the virtualizer setting in this app, it doesn't appear to affect the sound at all... I notice when going from 5 band to 10 band, you get different preset options, e.g. you lose 'normal' but gain 'flat'

I'd say if you have it available, it would be better to use the EQ built in on your phone. Certainly Samsung phones have their own EQ, as well as Dolby Atmos support.

Will this improve the bass output in my vauxhall corsa over Bluetooth
    paulbirkettuk's avatar
Should help a bit but it might not be good quality bass due to the potential distortion and your speakers ability to reproduce bass. You'd probably be better off fitting better speakers.
