Not going to apologise for the ignorance here. What's the point of a spring drive? What does it do/indicate or how does it help?
    fp30's avatar
The 'point' of spring drive is that its able to deliver the accuracy of a quartz movement without a battery. It's powered by the movement of your wrist (or winding the crown) instead like an automatic watch.

In a conventional automatic watch the movement of your hand winds a spring which stores energy. The energy is released slowly into a watch escapement mechanism that gives the 'tick' of a watch and regulates the second hand. But the watch escapement wears with time and is relatively imprecise.

In spring drive the energy is released into a continually spinning wheel instead of an escapement. This means it's less prone to wear but also instead of a tick you get a continuous sweep of the second hand. The tri synchro quartz regulator is the genius bit that regulates the speed of the second hand. As the wheel spins it induces a current that powers the quartz mechanism which in return induces a braking force on the spinning wheel which ultimately regulates the speed of the wheel and the second hand.

It's a feat of engineering. Which is the point.

When did Seiko become so expensive? They can’t charge so much for sapphire!

Grand Seiko is to Seiko as Ferrari is to Fiat.

My spring drive gains about a second a week

Okay, so I have Grand Seiko(different model) and Seiko Samurai. TBH I can't see any difference between them, except price. Wearing Samurai daily and it is so accurate( 2s fast in 24 hours) and beats Grand Seiko in that matter, which is losing 7s in 24 hours on same wearing pattern. Grand one mostly sits in the drawer now.
    crack_shot's avatar
you....... cant see the difference between an automatic and a spring drive?

the seiko samurai loses 35-45 seconds a day
    a rolex loses 4-6 seconds a day
a grand seiko loses 10 seconds in a year

nothing compares to the spring drive.

I had a problem with mine and they fixed it quickly no problem via the botique in Knightsbridge. Mine was used but the warranty is transferable.
    fureddo's avatar
What did they fix? And how long did it take?

Seiko is a Seiko, not high end like a Rolex
    ezzer72's avatar
Let's pretend for a moment that you are correct - which Rolex would you recommend for £3950?
  8. spatter's avatar

It's in the build and the tech. Unlike Rolex which is marketing
    drewan187's avatar
I’m sure it’s cool to like GS and criticise Rolex, but Rolex make incredible watches with near perfect quality and finish - yeah, they may be overhyped but let’s not pretend they’re somehow inferior.
  9. harvey.ba.mba's avatar
…the price is in the name of the watch.

Save yourself a few thousand! Looks a nice watch anyway

I don't think anyone who pays 4k for a watch is browsing the hotukd site. Especially where £2 cashback deals become most popular
    ezzer72's avatar
I don't mean to sound flash, but I think this site would be far better if it banned the £2 cashback rubbish. I'm here to buy proper stuff at great prices (including luxury watches).
  12. Tanuki334's avatar
These are really beautiful well-made watches
  13. David_KOje's avatar
Exquisite watches and I would take Grand Seiko over Rolex any day. They are better made and some little scallywag on a moped isn't going to try and rip your arm off when you are wearing it.

That said, they do not hold their value so even with this reduction I would still be looking at preowned.
  14. Tired.Ben.Affleck's avatar
Great watch but a poor investment piece.
    Tyranicus66's avatar
Watches fall into the same category as fine wine and classic cars. A complete punt in the dark. Some models will soar in value others will tank. It's true that Rolex, due to fantastic marketing, generally appreciate quite well but if you buying these kind of watches as "investments pieces" you are doing it wrong. They are meant for wearing.

Here is the real issue. Every plumber (sorry plumbers) and his dog thinks he has made it with a "Rolly", so they all want one. Rolex has a nasty stigma to many a collector for this reason but that did not stop the the prices going crazy. Things have just started to correct as they got frankly ridiculous.

There is a vastly superior quality than Rolex to be had for the money. During lockdown you could get a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms for LESS than a sub, a JLC Reverso in white gold for less than a Hulk and a VC Overseas for same price as a GMT Master 2. All three of these examples are better watches than Rolex has ever, or will likely ever make in it's entire history BUT you can't brag to billy-bob the sparks about it at the local sporting dinner - as he probably didn't even know they exist. I love my GS, but be aware of a few things:

The price isn't going to hold for resale.
You can buy most of these as grey imports, from UK sellers at a big discount new.
The warranty is not great because they have to go back to Japan and can take up to six months to come back.
Some models can wear quite large.

I would still buy another one, but I'm a watch nerd and spend more money than I should on watchers even though I've only got one watch wrist. (edited)
    Christopher.Dean's avatar
Curiously where might be the best place to buy a grey imported GS spring?
  16. Socobar's avatar
It’s a safe watch to wear on the high street without getting robbed.
    alchemistkevin's avatar
Yeah. most places in England, yes

I bought a used Spring Drive diver and it's my favourite watch
  18. 1Ton1981's avatar
It does not look like a £4,000 watch.
    gg1pl's avatar
Not the best looking GS example as they have some of the most beautiful dials found on any watch like the snowflake, spring and white birch

This model is no different though to other luxury watches like the Oyster Perpetual/Explorer that don't look like £6-8k+ watches but brand snobs overlook how boring these are because of the crown

Normally brand chasers not actual watch connoisseurs, those only interested/heard of the usual high street luxury brands, Tag, Omega, Breitling, Rolex etc (edited)
  19. skinrush's avatar
I like watches, but I don't get why you would pay £4-7.5K for one of these. Equally, I don't get why you'd pay £6-10K for a Rolex Oyster Perpetual.
I've no doubt from watching various YouTube reviews and seeing them in windows that they're great quality, but you're paying disproportionately for branding, marketing and history/horology.
When the price starts drifting over the £1.5K mark, it's diminishing returns, in terms of quality and design, in my opinion. (edited)
    scuttle's avatar
It’s diminishing returns much sooner than that. Best watch you can get for your money is an F91W. However, people like nice things and enjoy the engineering that goes into mechanical watches. It’s jewellery at the end of the day. Most hobbies are this way.

but some really great pieces discounted!

    A top quality watch.

One to buy for wearing and not just to leave in the box as an investment

    Are these even collectors pieces?
  23. comanche's avatar
I've got the Shunbun, and as others have said... The dial, finish, the quality and overall feel of the watch is incredible. I would highly recommend GS to anyone

You can get a nice vintage 36mm DJ for £3-4K quite easily.

I do like the Grand Seiko ‘look’. When I buy a watch, I buy it because I like it. I don’t think of it as an investment to sell later on. As such I would take one of these over most Rolex, say.
    mfea's avatar
Rolex is still a quality, and imo a date just looks far better aesthetically than this
  30. bespokebicycle's avatar
nice watch but a cursory look on the used market shows that there are plenty available at the 2.5k mark.. thats where the real value is.
    ezzer72's avatar
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can buy this model anywhere in the UK for that kind of price. It's not especially relevant how much they sell for in Japan, for example.

I had an experience with Grand Seiko which left me in tears that haunts me to this day. Me and my friend were mugged in London for our watches, he was wearing a Rolex and they chopped off his arm with a machete to steal it. But they didn't even think about lopping off my arm because I was wearing a grand Seiko.

I am sure I read that Seiko and Grand Seiko are separate but part of Seiko company. Seiko also owns Credor which are really expensive but very nice.
    Alansmithee's avatar
So this gets slightly complex - there are a lot of companies within a bigger group that have seiko in their name. The company that makes seiko, grand seiko and credor are all the same.
