sorted byAlso the 918/920 can only transcode to a certain point before the NAS tanks in performance anyway. I believe the furthest you should push it to is 1080p before you get issues.
I dropped Plex for Infuse but I used to use it for years without transcoding just fine. Just play your video content locally instead of having the NAS do unnecessary heavy lifting.
Anyway strong opinion over;
The purpose of this machine offers alot more value than just a dual core and 32GB RAM. As said in previous comments if high performance specs is what you'd want then you aren't really the target audience
These things seem to me to be a bit of a scam, targeting people who don't know better. Something like this has a bigger footprint, for sure, but throw in a £60 microserver case and it's gonna massively outperform any such NAS, with similar power consumption (as is the way of the budget Ryzen chips nowadays), and offer a lot more flexibility.
For those less inclined to put the effort in, it's worthy of note that installing Unraid is quite literally as simple as downloading 2 files from the internet, running 1 of them which will setup the other on a USB thumb drive and bingo. Has the added benefit of being a far more capable OS, too.
Synology OS is an excellent out of the box solution. No one wants to spend ages messing with UnRaid and tweaking hardware.
The machine itself runs quiet and at a very low wattage compared to what you linked.
Theres an obvious difference in quality and support that you get from enthusiast/business grade hardware. No ones gonna store vital backups or run a business on a cheapo RGB gaming PC

That also has the ability to put the storage pools on the nvme drives.
Can i use the m2 slots for additional storage? Any tried and tested m2 drives so far?
I like the idea of extending usage later without paying the huge additional sum of a 923+ from something like a 224+. Right now the 224+ is around £315 and the 723+ can be had for £376 and its in the middle in terms of pricepoint for a 2 bay with possible upgrades
EDIT: Thanks in advance. (edited)
You can put 2.5" SSD drives in the main bays, although not as quick as M2 NVME SSDs.
My reading of the 224+ product just released is that it is quite a specification trim from previous. Look on NasCompares Youtube for a good review of the limitations of the 224+.
Beware if you are wanting to transcode on the 723+, it does not have integrated graphics.
Hope that is helpful.

Would buy this in a heartbeat if I didn’t already have one
In this edition he builts his on NAS with all parts coming from Aliexpress
I keep meaning to get a NAS to back up photos and videos from my phone, but still haven't got round to it as it's such a minefield and I don't really know what I need.
I just want something that has a phone app so I can directly backup to the NAS from my phone and have it set to copy everything to a second drive, so that I have a backup if one fails.
Flash memory would be good if that's feasible, just so it's silent. Not sure if that's a good idea though for long term storage.
