Obviously no integrated gpu in this cpu... so do NOT get this for Plex and whatnot... no hardware transcoding of any kind.... 32GB max, but will it be any good for virtual machines with dual core cpu? somehow I feel like it's not such a great deal... Prefer DS918+ or DS920+ over this to be honest...

Hardware transcoding is such a niche and overblown thing, especially on Reddit. I've seen too many discussions where people believe it's something valuable but in reality would never use it.
Also the 918/920 can only transcode to a certain point before the NAS tanks in performance anyway. I believe the furthest you should push it to is 1080p before you get issues.

I dropped Plex for Infuse but I used to use it for years without transcoding just fine. Just play your video content locally instead of having the NAS do unnecessary heavy lifting.

    Anyway strong opinion over;
The purpose of this machine offers alot more value than just a dual core and 32GB RAM. As said in previous comments if high performance specs is what you'd want then you aren't really the target audience

I appreciate that for what this is, that's not an awful price, but you could easily build a more capable system running a ryzen 3/5, 16GB DDR4/5, with power supply and enclosure for the same price. That has the added ability to run as many hard drives as you can theoretically install (which with NVMe to PCIe adapters and expansion card PCIe adapters is a lot.

These things seem to me to be a bit of a scam, targeting people who don't know better. Something like this has a bigger footprint, for sure, but throw in a £60 microserver case and it's gonna massively outperform any such NAS, with similar power consumption (as is the way of the budget Ryzen chips nowadays), and offer a lot more flexibility.

For those less inclined to put the effort in, it's worthy of note that installing Unraid is quite literally as simple as downloading 2 files from the internet, running 1 of them which will setup the other on a USB thumb drive and bingo. Has the added benefit of being a far more capable OS, too.

Tbh your comment (especially calling it a scam) shows you don't really understand the use-case of a NAS like this.
Synology OS is an excellent out of the box solution. No one wants to spend ages messing with UnRaid and tweaking hardware.
The machine itself runs quiet and at a very low wattage compared to what you linked.
Theres an obvious difference in quality and support that you get from enthusiast/business grade hardware. No ones gonna store vital backups or run a business on a cheapo RGB gaming PC

I see the 723+ is on there as well which is a great price.

That also has the ability to put the storage pools on the nvme drives.

Was £520 most places at launch, not £550. 10GbE kit is another £130 on top 😔 (edited)

Just bought this model for backup for work. Never had a problem with Synology. Together with the offer on at Western Digital for 2 x 14 or 2 x 18tb drives for 30% off creates a very capable system.

Can TrueNAS be installed on this? (edited)

Nope - look at the QNAP TS-464

NAS noob here. Looking at the 723+ from ebuyer and I've looked but cannot find a clear answer.

Can i use the m2 slots for additional storage? Any tried and tested m2 drives so far?
I like the idea of extending usage later without paying the huge additional sum of a 923+ from something like a 224+. Right now the 224+ is around £315 and the 723+ can be had for £376 and its in the middle in terms of pricepoint for a 2 bay with possible upgrades

    EDIT: Thanks in advance. (edited)
    matthewsimms83's avatar
Am exactly the same position as you - looking at the 723+ quite closely as an upgrade for my 216J. My reading is that the M2 NVME drives for storage can only be used with Synology branded ones currently. They don't have the largest capacities (800GB max). There are work arounds cited above in the comments for enabling allowing other manufacturers (github.com/007…ume). Not sure how succesful this would be with different manufacturers.

You can put 2.5" SSD drives in the main bays, although not as quick as M2 NVME SSDs.

My reading of the 224+ product just released is that it is quite a specification trim from previous. Look on NasCompares Youtube for a good review of the limitations of the 224+.

Beware if you are wanting to transcode on the 723+, it does not have integrated graphics.

    Hope that is helpful.

Why not just build a far more useful pc for the same purpose?
    A57ton's avatar
As per other comments, this is significantly more efficient, the included apps are great, along with the included DDNS free for life provision is a no brainer.

Ensure QNAP and Synology do NOT use intel chippers as there was a known hw bug which both manufacturers deliberately ignored, causing chip fails

Was looking at the 423+ but at this price I cant knock it. If i need to get transcoding for plex Ill have to use a Nuc. But for longiverty this is the much better choice now to just find some hardrives

I had the same thinking and cancelled my order for the 423+ for this.

Love my 920 runs Plex for me really well and a number of dockers as well.

Would buy this in a heartbeat if I didn’t already have one

Any suggestions on a good NAS just for photo/video storage?

I keep meaning to get a NAS to back up photos and videos from my phone, but still haven't got round to it as it's such a minefield and I don't really know what I need.

I just want something that has a phone app so I can directly backup to the NAS from my phone and have it set to copy everything to a second drive, so that I have a backup if one fails.

Flash memory would be good if that's feasible, just so it's silent. Not sure if that's a good idea though for long term storage.

How so? You can bond the NICs for 2gbps and if that’s not enough you can buy a 10gb adapter.

Wanted a NAS system last year but couldn't justify spending this amount on a Synology so picked up a second hand Terramaster F4-210 for £150 and it's been amazing. I previously used a Raspberry Pi 3 to run my NAS but a dedicated unit is so much easier and well worth the extra money.
    teracir's avatar
I thought the terramaster do not have a raid option? Can you throw in any size drives on these?

Been running a synology 5tb raid 5 NAS for years. Wouldn’t mine one with ssd so it’s quicker, quieter etc. reckon it’s a big old wedge though. I use it as my work server (design/marketing agency) and store our old mp3s and family photos/movies. Backs up nightly to a external drive that I have on rotation…

What’s everyone intending to use for RAM upgrade? There’s a list on Reddit but looks like nothing for this model without nag message. Looks like Crucial may be the only exception, on similar models.

I've been running Plex on an old windows box for years, but it's recently started causing issues so I'm looking to go to a proper NAS. I am tempted with this but the transcoding thing is a bit of a sticking point, as it will primarily be a media server. So difficult to decipher what it is I actual need!
    Mariussx's avatar
You need 423+ maybe as it has the same cpu as 920+. That cpu has graphics card, which is better at transcoding. Look up the reviews by nascompares to see if these NAS devices will be something you are looking for.

Great price! If you have the time to tinker and build your own NAS then look elsewhere otherwise this is perfect for out of the box NAS storage systems with future upgrade ability. Just wish the 10Gbe came as standard as with other similarly specced NAS systems.
