Still is an Awesome game especially being an original Elite player from 84/85.

Still gives you that feeling you are in the vastness of space, and makes you think yet I'm pretty much alone out here still on the frontier.

Me too. I spent 6 weeks locked in my bedroom playing it on my Commodore 64. It was a pirated version, aptly enough.

This game took three years of my life of near constant game play. The learning curve is steep and once you hit a certain point you could be hooked for life. You have been warned. Fly safe commanders!

If you're into space exploration games you'll love this. Not gonna review the whole thing here, but basically it's a game which encapsulates everything you want from space travel - the thrill of jumping between solar systems, the desolate nature of deep space, the ability to travel incomprehensible distances and the feeling of time passing as you do so... All of that with the risk of pirates (in certain areas, with certain modes enabled), the challenge of having to work to unlock new parts, ships, and upgrades, and the faction system which you have to break to unlock places like Sol...

I may be slightly biased, as I used to work in close proximity to Frontier (and had lunch with a lot of their staff), but it genuinely is a superb game.

Oh that’s amazing! I was a huge DB fan and his work, elite I was fully addicted to at 14 yrs old and loved frontier although the bugs caused a few issues, that aside was great!

I did try to play this years ago but couldn’t get into it, the bar to entry is quite high as we can see with some comments it seems but I also knew that after that hurdle lies a very rewarding game that I should probably get back into!

I wonder if the servers are still populated, I never understood why the game is almost free to buy these days!

I’d love to play it I think but didn’t have the time at the time to get into it

I've played this on PC, PC VR and Steam deck; while this is steam deck unsupported I can assure you the game runs well enough to play, it's not as good as with a HOTAS VR setup but it's certainly comparable to console.

In terms of the game, this was the best space game out there (IMO) but it's probably been surpassed now by NMS, I've played this mainly as combat and exploration and it's well worth £4

VR is pretty good in elite, as long as you stay in your ship.

Can you use a mix of quest controllers and game pad in NMS since last update? Not played it for a couple of years, but used to use VR on planets and then switch to flat screen in space as controlling your ship with floating controllers was horrible.

Also a shame it didn't support room scale, I presume this hasn't changed

Fantastic game well worth 10 times this price. Take your time, the learn curve can be steep.

    As steep as eve online?

Love this game in VR. You can use the link cable, or airlink which is free and no cable or Virtual Desktop (paid on Meta website. I use Quest and Quest 2. I even extended my VR boundary to a huge one and I could walk around the ship. The detail in the corners and the wiring on the back of the chair. It is amazing. Then you such your head through the wall (the joys of VR) and you see the detailess hold that you will never see flat screen.
I use HOSAS, (dual thrust master 16000m sticks. Enough buttons for everything and using the second stick for going up and down is so intuitive. Excellent fit great dog fights and I can land at speed in seconds. Not I feel like Harrison Ford in his millennium falcon.
I also set it up with Voice Macro (free) though Voice Attack also works well and you can pay for famous actors voices. You can say things like "shields to Full" "Front Shields to max" " get those Shields up NOW" and they all do the same thing but it is so much more immersive. Time to go now "Warp Factor 5 Scotty" "To Infinity and Beyond". Well worth £3.69 of anyone's money.

I couldn’t get past the training section on the PlayStation version 😳

    That section is mostly harmless...

I spent longer configuring the controls for a flightstick than playing it
    iainl7's avatar
I spent somewhere north of 200 hours on it, but I’m not quite sure that isn’t true. The monstrous nonsense I ended up with, involving a flight stick in one hand and a joypad in the other, would be totally unusable by anyone else, but oh boy did it allow for some neat tricks without taking my hands off in VR.
  11. maltloaf_df's avatar
The absolute best experience in VR if you have any love of space flight.
    jhead89's avatar
I’ve been told the exact same thing. Can you do it with an Oculus Quest 2? What do I need to do in order to get it working on Steam VR? Is that possible? Would love to play Half Life Alyx too (edited)

Pre-ordered this before release, never got around to playing it...

I remember playing in VR on an extended gaming session, must have fallen asleep on my way to an unknown star.

Only to wake up to all the alarms bleeping and my ship disintegrating in close proximity to a pulsar star. Holy sheet was that scary af as I scrambled to get away ASAP. I died (edited)

I used to play this religiously! Even downloaded like a trader app on my phone that told me all the prices for commodities everywhere looool

If only I put as much effort in and got that excited about a job irl 😮‍💨
    Sp0oner's avatar
What was te app I need that instead of writing the prices down!

If it's anything like the original that I played on the Amiga you could easily lose a year of your life haha.
    iainl7's avatar
Steam says I racked up 323 hours before I quit the habit, so that’s probably an underestimate.

If I didn't have Starfield on order, I would have been all over this. Bargain.
    rapid85's avatar
Apparently you can't even fly your spaceship around in starfield, it's all fast travel lol.
  17. Sp0oner's avatar
I have this but not played it much due to gta v and rdr2 but i really want to play it more but the learning curve is steep and not something you can pick up and play for 30 minutes. I saw this in vr and it was stunning. This is a bargsin for under £4!

Most comments I have ever seen on an Elite Dangerous deal (that starfield effect). Played this every day for nearly 5 years now. Its fun but not a game that you make quick progress in. I tend to help new players with a few hundred million credits then leave them to their own devices
    Wipe0wt99's avatar
Yeah I can imagine its massively engrossing, more a lifestyle that gets addictive, I easily sink into those so sticking with Total war three kingdoms atm

Love me some Elite, still on my grind to an Anaconda though with how little time I get to actually play it

The best way I've found to get money fast is to do bounty hunting in resource extraction sites. Equip a kill warrant scanner (I think that's the right one) and only target ships that have already been targeted by federal ships and you should gather money fast. Remember to collect your bounty payments from the nearby station. Just make sure you're able to jump out fast if you get in any trouble but it's been mostly fine for me. (edited)

I loved Freelancer as a kid. Is this worth it, anything like it?

Does anyone know what you get with the standard edition code? I seem to remember you had to buy expansions separately. (edited)
