Reykjavik, on the coast of Iceland, is the country's capital and largest city. It's home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history. The striking concrete Hallgrimskirkja church and rotating Perlan glass dome offer sweeping views of the sea and nearby hills. Exemplifying the island’s volcanic activity is the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa, near the village of Grindavik. ― Google

Is this the best time to see the northern lights?

You’d have more joy in Tromso, Norway.

The higher up you go the better your chances of seeing them.

I’ve been to Iceland twice in the winter and didn't see the lights. Went to Tromso in March this year and saw a fantastic display.

The KP index would need to be quite high to see the northern lights in the UK and even Southern Iceland (where Reykjavik is). In Tromso you can still see the lights even with a low KP index.

My advice is to book as many night time bus trips as you can afford, avoid the boat trips as they can’t get far enough away from light pollution and can’t travel long distances in a short period of time to find breaks in the clouds.

Silly question - what's it like at Jan time of year? Would it just be dark all the time?

I was there in early February this year and I did enjoy it. Some roads were closed due to snow and the days were short though, definitely make sure you choose hotels with free cancellation while booking them

flic.kr/p/2…JL3If you're after northern lights it's good. I really like Iceland, very friendly people everyone I encountered spoke English, even the elderly lady who I really didn't expect to speak English, but she did and helped my get petrol (you have to have a certain card for some of the cashierless pumps).

When I win the lottery I'll be wintering in Iceland.

I took this in November a few years back. (edited)
