Fly drives do exactly what they say on the tin – you get a flight over the pond and a set of wheels thrown in. So, if you fancy exploring on your own, you can mix up motels and hotels each night and do something different every day. You could be shaking hands with Mickey one morning and roller-blading along Miami’s sidewalks the next. You see, fly drives give you the total freedom to do things your way, at your own pace. Perfect if you don’t want to be based in just one place. And what’s so good about a TUI Fly Drive is that we give you unlimited mileage so you can really hit the open road. Plus, you won’t get stung by any of those nasty ‘out-of-state’ driving charges. In true road-trip style, you can Thelma and Louise your way across the States.

What Happens on a Fly Drive?

We’ll fly you out to Florida where you’ll be met by a TUI Advisor. They’ll point you in the direction of the car hire people and set you on your way. After that, it’s totally up to you. Theme parks. Everglades. Shopping malls. It’s all there for the taking. At the end of your stay, you just need to head back to the airport, hand over your keys and check-in for your flight home. It’s that easy.

In order to hire the car, you have to take out the rental insurance that can be pre-booked or paid for locally. Remember, each driver needs to present a valid driving licence and a credit card in the driver’s name which serves as a security deposit.

HAS ANYONE we booked this taken their car insurance. I mean full CDW with no excess. If you have I would surely appreciate if you could let me know the price on What grade of car. Thank you so much in advance.

Hey I was in your position a few weeks ago and no one could tell me which was annoying so here goes.

When you arrive you have to pay a sales tax on the car hire, that is £180ish pounds.

You then have additional insurance cover namely: Breakdown Recovery cover, CDW (which is not just you paying the first 2k or 3k, you owe money for the FULL VALUE of the car if you crash it). you then have Supplementary Liability Cover (SLI) which is cover for up to 1 million pounds in damage to a third party, the insurance you get with Alamo only covers the first 20k.

    CDW = 20USD Per day
SLI = 13ish USD per day
    Skipped the breakdown cover.

In total I ended up paying around £450 extra at the desk for Sales Tax and Insurance.

Now you can buy CDW cover from the UK for the US, but you are at their mercy and owe Alamo the total cost of the car (if you write it off) and then need to wrangle with the UK insurance provider to claim the monies back.

Final Thoughts: Melbourne is a small airport, you pay a premium to hire cars in the airport especially at peak times because there aren't enough cars to go around (as compared to Orlando Intl Airport).

I would check the cost of hiring separately with all the cover included at melbourne airport vs the additional £450 to see which works out cheaper, in my case, a completely new car hire was £750 so was worth paying £450 instead.

Very, very cheeky from TUI, considering other companies like Virgin offer all insurance as standard, however, you may end up still paying a lot less if you compare TUI's £250 per ticket + £450 for car insurance to the equivalent that Virgin would charge.

    I hope this helps.

PS I really liked Melbourne Airport, was out of there so quick and Melbourne is a nice area if you have some time to go there (lovely beaches + Cape Canaveral).

That's a good price. I did a fly drive years ago, leaving from Gatwick to Orlando and flying back from Miami.
We did Orlando for a few days with a trip to Cape Canaveral, then stayed in Clearwater, with a stop at Busch Gardens then down to Naples then the Keys (stunning, especially Bahia Honda state park and 7 mile bridge, as per picture above) with the obligatory stop at the Everglades for an airboat ride then finally back up to Miami for the last few days.
Food cheap, petrol cheap, accommodation cheap.
    Theme parks OMG!!!!!! expensive.
I am not sure of the rules today but you had to HAVE a place to stay booked for the first day of arrival in the US.
Don't think about doing, JUST DO IT (edited)

Fly and drive includes hold lugage (20kg) If you buy only fly tickets, you need to pay for the lugage on top of ticket price.
    tom6195's avatar
Oh right but it’s still cheaper to book flights + add 20kg luggage. That’s why I’m wondering what car hire costs are like on arrival rather than booking a fly drive package.

Why does the price double when you remove the 2 children?
    jaju123's avatar
Just keep the children I guess and say you lost them when you show up

I know you post some great deals, is there anywhere you would recommend me taking my wife away around the 16th of December for a couple of days for her 40th? (edited)

Had a lovely holiday, paid £450 additional for sales tax/insurance on the 'drive' part of the fly drive which was disappointing!

...whats much more disappointing is that the USA/Florida is so expensive now due to inflation, eye wateringly expensive! Budget for your food costing at least double/triple what it costs here.
    tom6195's avatar
What? Why did you have to pay an additional £450 for car hire?

Tui seems to think Key West = Orlando, going by the picture. Orlando is inland.
    HiddenMickey001's avatar
Or just the bridges over the Indian River

TUI fly into Melbourne now which is about 70 miles drive from Orlando. You can however land at Melbourne and be out in your car significantly quicker than getting through Orlando International

Very hit and miss atm. A friend flew in to Melbourne a week ago and took 2/3 hours as a few TUI flights arrived at once.

I did MCO in August from dis embarkment to waiting for a Lyft within 35 mins.

No rhyme and reason atm in Florida airports

Wow this sounds very cheap, what’s the catch here?
    mattd555's avatar
    it's with awful TUI

We've literally just done this from Newcastle. We paid £1800 for the 3 of us including car hire with the full gold package. I think thats a bargain, as car hire for 2 weeks is around £600-700. TUI actually weren't that bad. We paid £30 each for extra legroom and it made quite a big difference for the small amount of money.

Ps if anyone needs any help or guidance let me know (edited)

Did you have to pay the £450 extra for the car mentioned below?

Curious. Is it cheaper to hire a car once you get there? Looking at prices from Birmingham to MLB for 02-09 October it’s £302pp flight or £471pp fly drive. For the four of us that’s an extra £676 for the “fly drive” option plus whatever nasty fees I’ll have to pay when we reach there and collect the car?.

Its certainly cheaper to upgrade at the US hire desk when you get there , for instance last year I had the basic car package with TUI who had wanted an extra £1400 for an SUV …But on arriving at Melbourne negotiated $20 a day (so $280) for a upgrade to a v6 Grand cherokee ,(no V8 hemi alas) You are limited to what they have and what they want to push however. Had a great deal on a Tahoe once.
To me driving in the US is all about a big car so I factor it in to the pricing.

This is a great price for flights to Florida.

When I went a couple of years ago, it was cheaper to book car hire direct with hertz/alamo/avis which includes zero excess insurance than it was to take the 'included' car and pay the optional-not-really-optional insurance.
    tom6195's avatar
That’s exactly what I was thinking of doing. Booking flights only with TUI and arranging my own car hire with rentalcars.com?
  16. emgala86's avatar
Such a good price for two adults and two children

I suppose I should jump in with the hate filled comments that filled my Sept Orlando post a few days back, seems to be the norm
    ...
Wow yeh what about the kids education, 2 weeks out of school in Sept 🤷!
    steveieboy1's avatar
Well you could have kids that haven't started school yet

This is insanely cheap, assuming that there any taxes to pay when you pick up your car at the airport. You may find four passengers and four suit cases a bit tight in a compact car. September is usually a wet month in Florida. You will need a lot of money for a two week stay. Even doings things on a tight budget will cost at least £4,000. To properly enjoy your trip you will need to double that.
