Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it's up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery-and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he's got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

Just to flesh out the other comments, but The Martian is the book of Andy Weir’s that everyone knows, not least because it was made into a film. His second, book, Artemis, is pretty much universally considered to not have been nearly as good. This is his third, and any concerns about him being a one hit wonder have gone away, because this is excellent. Definitely on a par with the Martian for me, and I might actually have even enjoyed it more. And I’m not someone who tends to read heavier sci fi, so even if you’re afraid of getting bogged down in the technicalities, still give this a go. Much like with the Martian the science in it (which may be completely made up for all I know) is accessible and doesn’t get in the way of what is an excellent story. Buy it.

Agreed, the Martian was great. PHM is also imo a step up, feels somewhat similar (for the right reasons) with an added mystery element to it

Hope they make this into a film!

This is a great little book. It does not take long to read and is sure to get made into a film at some stage.

I gather it's already down to be made into a film - the current appalling mess they're making of movies is worrying what they'll do to it

Read this earlier this year, very good, do persist if the start doesn't grip you. (I managed to pick two novels in a row where the protagonist starts off with memory loss, bit of a cliche these days)

loved. Audible version awesome but expensive without membership

Excellent book. I'd given up on modern sci-fi books - usually start and stop within half a dozen chapters. This is right up there with the Sci-Fi greats of 70s and before. I'd seen the film The Martian so I thought I'd give the author a try. Currently reading Artemis (just started)
Edit: Thought I'd listen to the audiobook. Awful narrator. Stopped listening and started back reading the book again (edited)

Loved The Martian, loved this even more! As others have mentioned there are similarities to the Martian but with, let’s just say another element, brilliant book.
