Stupid question I have a existing wired door bell is it just a easy disconnect then reconnect??

I've just done one of these for my mother in law, its pretty easy to do but I would say not that easy to work out if your wiring is compatible.

You have to work out if the wires are the correct amps and then have to make a small wiring change in your chime. The way they recommend will then bypasses your chime so stops working. It will then only ring on the doorbell, phones, echos etc You can by a ring chime if you wish.

There should be some sort of transformer either in your chime or coming off your fuse box to lower the amps to the doorbell.

They do work well though, better than the battery ones in that they response faster, I guess because it doesn't go to sleep to save power (edited)

    Ring Plug-In Adaptor £20.99 amazon
"Includes a 6-metre cable with clips and comes with built-in short-circuit protection"
an easy fix. get the wire to the doorball. plug in. run setup. done.
    * already have one on the front door. thinking adding one to the backdoor, just for "liveview" so £43 all in.

can you use it without subs? i have other cameras for recording. so eg will it call my phone at work when someone presses it?
    jordanc93's avatar
If someone pressed the doorbell then yes it will notify you on your phone and allow you to view the doorbell live and speak if needed. You just won't get a recording of it.

No mention of this in the post but this is showing to me on Amazon with a 10% voucher also bringing the total to £19.79. (edited)

    I have two questions:

    1. I know these are Amazon devices so it's unlikely, but are they also compatable with Google Home devices as well as Alexa?

    2. Do they have a way to recognise if it's you walking up to your door? I wouldn't want it to record me every time I come home or flag alerts up to my phone
    kuttann's avatar
    1. Yes,Definitely with Alexa
    2. No

Fitted a few of these, they are really good, and the subscription is worth paying for.
    AdamBrunt's avatar
In what way is the subscription worth it ? As opposed to, say, getting a blink system with a sync module to store all footage to a local SD card ?

Sure the sync module increases the initial cost but then no monthly fee which offers nothing extra

Picked up one of these a couple of years ago, worth noting they can run on 24v DC or ac.
I had a spare 24v dc 1amp power supply lying around and it works fine with it
  14. wayne12's avatar
Does this work with a non screened Alexa? So will make a echo dot make a noise/alert?
    jordanc93's avatar
Yes echo dots can be used as a chime to announce someone is at the door.

Would we need a chime if connecting to existing  doorbell connextion?Doesn't seem to be any on offer?
    Immortal-Cat's avatar
yes you need to buy a chime separately.

My elderly parents are a little anxious of the flat roof outside their room. Could I use this purely as a motion detector camera (no bell functionality needed) and put it on the outside of their room wall facing the flat roof? . I.e. would it alert them if there was someone walking towards their window on the flat roof? They live on a very safe street, so looking for a cheap option to allay their fears.

I've installed a loud window sensor on their window if anyone opens it, and I also tried a Philips Hue outdoor sensor, which was a huge mistake. I think a camera would really be the ideal situation to give them peace of mind. (edited)
    UnknownConcept's avatar
Considering it's motion sensor, yes....Tapo camera would be nicer and has a activity alert system

These are great and installed a transformer at the same time, and no problems, until my postie was tapping at my front door and did not press the ring button, when I opened the door and asked why he never bothered with the ring bell, he stated the in his experience they are crap, never work as battery always running down, then informed him it was wired and gave him a demo and seemed to win him over no problems since!!!
    hilari0us's avatar
Let's hope for your sake, that 1 you keep the same postie for ever and 2 that all other future callers are psychic and don't do exactly the same thing......I think most folks avoid pressing them because of the hideous embarrassing unchangeable outside chime noise. Makes many folk cringe.

Someone told me that the new Ring doorbells no longer integrate with Alexa - anyone know ?
    Darter's avatar
I should think so, they are both owned by Amazon.
  19. xxbluedragonxx's avatar
Great price. Shame have to pay forever for recordings.
    i-adam_2000's avatar
Does this apply to all ring doorbells
  20. christobal's avatar
Can this be wired in so that it works with my normal doorbell? Ideally I would like to press my existing decorative doorbell and have the ring be activated at the same time. I am happy to wire up - just want to know if it's possible before I purchase.
    k9plus1's avatar
where would you put the ring video doorbell ?
  21. mikeyhindey's avatar
Anyone got a guide how to wire it from a light switch?
    jjav's avatar
Your not serious. Wire it into a socket with plug adaptor
  22. k9plus1's avatar
parallel it up and stick in a transformer on the spur ?
  23. dhuban's avatar
Do I need existing wiring to buy this or can I buy it and also buy the hardwiring to a plug?

And if so can someone direct me to what I would need to buy to go straight from this to a plug socket please (edited)
    kroe9's avatar
These need a transformer to change the voltage from 230v (mains voltage from a plug) to the voltage these require, (used to be 24v from memory, but check instructions). Problem I've had installing these are that most doorbell transformers give an output of 8-12v, so finding the right transformer that fits for the situation you need is not as easy, as options are limited.
  24. k9plus1's avatar
yes if you have a socket nearby

What's the monthly ongoing "storage" costs for these video doorbells nowadays? (Ring, Blink etc)

Are there any where you don't have to pay any ongoing costs?
    ThermalRider's avatar
Eufy video doorbells have no subscription built in storage
  26. ThermalRider's avatar
Bought one and now wish I'd bought two before deal expired. I hope they come back on sale on Pime Day
  27. kandinsky's avatar
How do you get the 30 day free trial of recordings etc? Set mine up and all working but cant see where to activate free trial.
