This thing should be £110 max, and people complain about apple being overpriced lol. (edited)

Sorry for the question, I have no idea about this but was thinking of getting it for my son.

Can he use this to play games on my PS5 whilst he is away?
What if I am playing on the console at the same time?

From the faq. Just needs to be on a WiFi. Network (edited)

This will be up there with the Logitech G Cloud for pointless devices no-one will use.

    Either;

Steam Deck with Chiaki (Where you have a useful device for playing games locally / not just locked to PS)

Mobile device with something like a Razer Kishi/Nacon MG-X Pro/Backbone. (edited)

Smyths have backbone one on offer for £64. Apart from haptics is there much difference between Portal and this with an android device?
  4. DJ.Mole's avatar
Isnt it just a 1080p screen?
    EugeneVictorTooms's avatar
    Yep, perfect at 8".

For a device that's so dependant on low latency and high speeds, it blows my mind that they didnt at least include the option of an ethernet port...
    complicatedsam's avatar
Just buy a adapter for it, usb c to ethernet
  6. subcon959's avatar
I think something under £150 would've been more appropriate considering it's just a standard DualSense with a screen and WiFi.
    spiritual_mutant's avatar
can see it happening, probably sit at that price for a long time further down the line,
  7. LGB87's avatar
My biggest issue with this is I expect latency of network will still be a big issue.

I am someone who understands all of this - Have PS5 connected by Gigabit connection/cables, have WiFi6 router and still I am less than impressed with the performance of PS5 Remote Play when tried with iPad/Steam Deck/Backbone even locally. It can be OK. But any game that requires precise input - Shooting/Fighting/Rhythm games or anything with precise timed input is impossible to play properly..

Your standard household, with less than good WiFi, is going to really struggle with performance of this device in my opinion. Unless they've implemented some sort of magic with it that you don't get with the other Remote Play options. (edited)

Slightly cheaper on EU amazons than UK. Maybe keep an eye on the exchange rates.
  9. DQ111111's avatar
Do I need to be in the same environment and network as the ps5 to stream? Or can this device independently work without it being linked to the ps5/4?
    mikefgroves's avatar
As long as you’re on the internet and your ps5 is on the internet, it matters not where you are in the world.

There will be minimum requirements for internet speeds but that’s the same as if you’re in the same building as your PS5.
  10. internetbrowser's avatar
Lol. Why would anyone get this?
    hypaed's avatar
    I'm really excited for this.

I've not always got access to the console and remote play on phones suck.
  11. P_W82's avatar
People with busy family lives will buy this while teens or people who live alone will continue complaining online about how useless it is as they're clearly the only demographic that matters (it's already sold out across all retailers in Japan)

All your alternatives you list are always compromised in some way, like using my phone, that I actually frequently use for communicating... not smart! Or using the big bulky deck with 800p screen.. no!
    Wigan_Stu's avatar
Exactly! I have a Ps5, a nice HDMI 2.1 OLED with an Atmos sound system. I also have 2 kids who want to watch the main TV and as I don't hate them (yet) I like to sit with them. I have a backbone and it's great BUT not perfect. I have to take my case off (S23 ultra so doesn't work with a case), I then can't use my phone for communication. I also usually only use remote play for grinding, cleaning up trophies on slower paced games so usually need to use my phone for a collectable guide etc. which means having to keep minimising the remote play app.

Portal is perfect for me, big screen, no compromise on controls and can still use my phone. It won't be useful for every one but the amount of people pooing on it just coz they don't have a use for it is weird. I don't have a use for a plant pot posted a few posts above this, I've not gone in there to post that it's useless for me.

Good price but still feels like a lot for what it does
  13. ecurb77's avatar
Seems to be Oos most places and for delivery.
Just don't understand why people come to comment on a device they have no interest in. I have one preordered from Sony already because it cuts out the inconvenience of either locking up my phone with an add on, or connecting my one PS5 controller to a tablet.
Yes, it's over-priced ... but in 2023, £199 really isn't that bad. People don't think twice about spending £800+ on a new mobile phone that does pretty much the sane things as their old ones every 1-2 years, so it's not really that big an ask.
    Wigan_Stu's avatar
Always find gamers weird. Imagine trawling through sites trying to find things you're NOT interested in and telling people that you're not interested and they're silly for wanting it. Proper weird behaviour.

Anyway, I'm off to comment on a load of microwaves and dishwashers I don't fancy the look of

    spiritual_mutant's avatar
what PS-exclusive games have you played?
  15. dgh89's avatar
This is a terrible product. It’s like burning money.
  16. hksam07's avatar
    perfect , preordered
  17. I.Am.Lado's avatar
This is awfully expensive for what you get.
    InfoAddict's avatar
Yes. If it had some hardware to play PS4 and PS5 games at a certain settings profile (similar to Deck verified) then they'd have been onto something.
  18. mattlong37051's avatar
I'd take my OLED Vita back over this any day
    subcon959's avatar
Yeah, I was always confused why they didn't allow Remote Play with the Vita when the PS5 launched.

    Now we know why.
  19. Rhufus308's avatar
Anyone can replicate this via remote play whether via a laptop, tablet or mobile phone and a PS controller. For me personally, cannot see the justification for this.
    PsychONeill's avatar
If you can’t see the problems with utilising the 3 options you’ve listed then I don’t know what to say to you.
  20. skinrush's avatar
So rather than developing a Switch/Steam Deck competitor and successor to the excellent, but criminally under supported (by Sony) Vita, Sony thinks that for portable play, you should buy their PS5 (at £420 ish) and this streaming wifi/screen/controller hybrid for another £200 ish.
And the gaming experience will depend greatly on the strength of your internet package and connection... So it's only portable in the sense that you move it somewhere with excellent wifi speeds and stablility - So can't really be used on public transport, many hotels etc etc.
For the love of all that's pure, don't encourage Sony by buying this... (edited)
    subcon959's avatar
I'm sure I read this was only for home use. I don't think internet connection matters. They literally made it as barebones as possible (there are videos of the inside and it's empty) and then slapped almost half the price of the PS5 on it.
  21. HogarthHughes's avatar
This is exactly what we need in our household, my lad also wants one.

The freedom to play PS5 games on a screen with full Dualsense features is just what we want. I’ll play a lot more games instead of waiting for the TV to become available.

    Preordered.
  22. DaveNovell's avatar
    Ordered cheers
  23. gmoore's avatar
At first I thought it was a stupid idea.. now I’m thinking if it does work via WiFi rather than your broadband connection it might actually be ok for me (crappy ee connection as can’t get fibre here but got a wifi6 router). Handy for playing in the other rooms when I need to watch my daughter..
    WhaleTrain's avatar
Not sure if I'm misunderstanding here but using WiFi would be using your broadband connection? I'm very confused
  24. Steveo's avatar
I can see some disappointed kids receiving this for Christmas who don't own PS5s, bought by unsuspecting parents
  25. mikefgroves's avatar
There’s a lot about this device to complain about, but I can’t help but find myself drawn to it.

    Decent discount so voted hot.
  26. Gareth_Lewiss6w's avatar
I haven't got a PS5, so this deal ain't for me. But I can totally see the benefits of this. An 8 inch screen is going to be much more comfortable than a small phone that you have to hold closer to your face. It's like iPad mini sized, but you don't need to worry about propping it up, or having some weird contraption that you have to attach to it.

I admit it's a very niche product, but as a dad with two young kids, I game exclusively handheld (Switch and Steam Deck), just because it's much more convenient. I can play for 15-30 mins anywhere in the house and put it in sleep mode put it down and come back to it later, and when I have got a bit more time, I can chill on the sofa or in bed while the wife watches TV.

I have a Series S that I haven't turned on in about six months. To have a lightweight and portable handheld with the graphical fidelity of a PS5 is a win for me. £188 is just about reasonable for me. (edited)
    thelagmonster's avatar
Except you're adding input delay by having content stream to the device, which is going to make it a massively inferior experience to Switch and Steam Deck.
  27. Odyssey's avatar
We just use the ipad and a PS5 controller for playstation and xbox gamepass.
    richard.ashcroft's avatar
You can play ps5 games on your iPad?
  28. jjam's avatar
I can remote play on tablet or phone using my controller. Can't really see this being a big sucess?
    boulder1's avatar
The pre-orders have sold out already in a lot of countries.

I can see why people don't want it. I can also see why people do. Personally, the dedicated device aspect, with dualsense controls and 60fps gameplay with (reportedly) better connection to your ps5? It's expensive, but thats ticking a lot of boxes for me.
  29. rectangularcuboid's avatar
A good price for this would be £87.99.
  30. konan100's avatar
Can't people just find something else to do when the TV is being used by someone else
    sm9690's avatar
You can take this out and about with you and just tether it to your phone
  31. HogarthHughes's avatar
Smyths Toys have stopped taking any more preorders, yep as the oracles on here have said.. nobody will buy it.

    Haters will always hate.
    spiritual_mutant's avatar
tbf i can see why steam deck users are getting triggered, most competition devices become irrelevant in comparison, but sony done a good job at separating the two, and thus allowed it to gather momentum via marketing on its own accord really well.

releasing a dedicated handheld halfway into the ps5 doesnt make sure, from the publisher to developer investment point of view. it would appear to be more financial suicide.

I feel sony are testing the waters with this device, understanding the demand and need for it (via pre orders) will give them a better understanding to the demand for a dedicated handheld, which they can look into releasing around the start of PS6 lifespan.
  32. alex_smith9OE's avatar
I don't think it's for people who have family's personally, I think it's for people who are rich, I say that to say this, your smartphone does the same thing get a £50 backbone and you up and running, it's only sold out because they didn't make a huge a mount
  33. simba2585's avatar
Did they not promise something similar for the ps3 but using a psp?
    123justlooking's avatar
I would imagine it's the same tech that they used for the PS Vita, but for the PS5 rather than PS4.
  34. thelagmonster's avatar
Comically overpriced, like the Dualsense Edge before it.

Hopefully Sony change course a bit with Jim Ryan leaving.
    InglouriousBasterd's avatar
No it won't.. Just remember PS3 release event.
That's a Sony for you - whatever price they come up with - they think it's a good price for every consumer

Back in stock and ordered Not a massive discount but will take it for a preorder (edited)
    deleted449189's avatar
Yeah, £187.99 better than £199.99 however you look at it. Personally I think it’s a reasonable price anyway, I’ll be giving this a go.
