the link for this post doesn't specify the model. For the avoidance of doubt, this is the latest version (RTL515), which has the addition of Bluetooth to phone, and peloton mode (so you don't blind club mates).

I have teh RTL510. I am waiting for a USBC version before upgrading, as i also want peleton mode

A great piece of kit - but has been cheaper quite a few times - as well as the fact that there are other alternatives out there too. Haven't voted either way.

But, if you do decide to take the plunge and are intending to pair it with a Garmin Edge device which allows custom data fields and widgets via Connect IQ, then I highly recommend the Smart Bike Lights (data field) and Bike Lights Control (Widget) which allows you to do all sorts of stuff. For example, to save battery life, during daylight hours I use day flash mode and set it to illuminate only when approaching traffic is detected (and goes off after 5 minutes of no detection) - I ride mainly quiet roads so there is no point in the light flashing continuously when most of the time there is no-one behind me to see it. Outside of daylight hours, I've programmed the light to switch to continuous night flash mode. I'll admit, it does take a little bit of effort to set it up initially, but once you've got the hang of it, it's really powerful.

Really interesting as wasnt aware of this.

Do you have to enter a code string to get it to do what you want ? If so, what is the code for the setup you have please ? Thanks

Anyone on the fence about this should take the plunge and get it, I wouldn't be without it now. Good price for what it does.

I had the RTL510 until last week when it failed after 4 years and c14k miles of cycling. Cheapest I could find this model was £142, which I bought as once you've had one of these you really appreciate how good they are. Voted hot for this deal. (edited)

At first I thought..."how is this a deal, what am I missing here?" because the title is vague and the link goes through to the Varia™ RVR315, which has a standard RRP of £129.99. But then I saw on Amazon the Garmin Varia RTL515 Rearview Cycling Radar and Tail Light for £129.99, which I'm presuming this deal is meant to be for?

So, you might want to change the title and edit the link to: amazon.co.uk/Gar…435

If it made beeping noises and spoke about how far a person/ bike/ car was away it would really irate me I’d have to throw it. Haha. X
    skdotcom's avatar
It beeps, but you can turn that off.

I wouldn't use a mirror personally. I rarely look behind now as this has been ultra reliable for me. It only fails to detect cars behind you if they have taken a really wide approach, that's never a bad thing though.

I ride mainly outside of town but never switch it off even if I do go through built up areas. The beeps dont bother me, just a reminder it has my back.......... (edited)

I'm glad it's the unisex version. Those gender-specific bicycle lights are so passé!

Unnecessary piece of kit. A simple flashing red light is enough…. That you can charge up! And wear bright clothing! & reflectors ! 💡 💡 💡
    skdotcom's avatar
Doesnt to do the same thing though does it. This unit makes you aware of the vehicles behind you, its not just about being seen.

Good price (it's what I paid a few months ago) and a good device. I'd argue it's a good piece of kit for "quiet" roads, where cars are the exception. It warms me of approaching vehicles well before I can hear them.

Wouldn't be without it now. Wish I bought one years ago

This is probably the most useful cycling item I've ever bought

Not worth it for travelling around town (where a mirror is perfect), great for country roads. Is that a good summary?

These are a great innovation. At first I turned it off for commuting in heavy traffic, but now I leave it on all the time. I just set the notification to beep once though, or it's too annoying. At a glance I can tell not just that there are vehicles approaching, but how many.

Not a brilliant deal but a good product, battery lasts for ages. Great if you ride on quiet roads, annoying on busy roads. Sometimes loses a car that's right behind you until it overtakes so you still need to look behind to check sometimes. Also detects cyclists. Light mode can be controlled from your Garmin too. Some cars and traffic lights have radar that causes it to show an error but it recovers. Gives you more confidence riding out in the road or dodging potholes, or riding 2 abreast, knowing that you'll be alerted of cars coming in good time. Also alters its flash pattern when it does detect a car, which does seem to slow most of them a bit more.

Not sure why this isnt a brilliant deal, as I needed to buy one last week and the cheapest was £142.
I bought the old model 4 years ago for £99 but I doubt you'll ever see a deal like that again

According to Amazon this features "platoon mode" so good for armed forces too

"Varia RTL515 features several modes, including the platoon mode, with which a low intensity flash is emitted that does not disturb other riders when going in a group." (edited)
    onotron's avatar
It's actually peloton mode - must be a typo.

I would never ride my bike without mine now. It once run out of power with 30km to go and I felt lost.

I’d buy another tomorrow at full price if mine died, at this price it’s a no brainer

Without doubt the best bit of bike tech I have purchased! Worth every penny!

Like others have said once you’ve had one of these you wouldn’t ride without it. It’s single handed the best thing I’ve ever bought for my bike. I bought the one without the light as it’s a bit smaller and I was worried the light may stop working, it’s never let me down and I ride about 12k per year, awesome product.

Do you like it around town? Do you have a mirror as well?
