Nobody enjoys coming home to a cold house. And with this Hive smart thermostat, you won't have to. Just use the Hive app on your phone to control temperature of your home and hot water from anywhere. How easy is that? Or you can connect the thermostat to Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant to control your heating with simple voice commands. Want to stop wasting heat in your bedrooms during the day but keep your living room warm and cosy? Add more thermostats to regulate up to 6 zones of heating all around your home.
Good to know
- If your home isn't as warm as you'd like, use the boost function to quickly turn up the heat or turn on the hot water - If you've gone out and left the heating on, geolocation will notify you to turn it off - Keep your pipes safe with frost protection - it automatically adjusts the temperature when it drops below 7°C - Control your heating remotely with Holiday mode - just change the temperature based on the weather back at home and save energy __________________________________ Please note: - The thermostat requires Hive Hub (sold separately). - We recommend that the Hive Thermostat is installed by a qualified professional – installation is not included in this kit.
Hive Thermostat is compatible with: - Most gas & LPG systems - Oil boilers if they have an existing thermostat or programmer - Electric boilers with standard room thermostat and/or programmer Please see the Hive website for full compatibility details
The comment I was looking for, would wait for black Friday deals.

Be wary buying a second hand Hive Hub for use with this. Once a Hub has been paired to a Hive account it's locked to that account, it can't be paired to another account.
Poucave
It's true but if you call customer service, they can unpair it for you. They will contact the former owner of the hub. If they do not refuse the transfer within 7 days, they will reset ownership of the hub. (edited)

This will work internally but if you want it to work on the app via the internet you will need a hive hub.
dragon2611
I believe Zigbee2MQTT can control these if you are into home automation then home assistant should be able to take direct local control of it.

Hi is it easy to connect if anyone knows ? Thank s
Zimmy
If you have a standard BG timer with the standard wiring backplate (like the Drayton LP series) on the wall then you can reuse this as its compatible. Then all you have to do is bridge out your old thermostat connections.
As others have said you will need a Hive hub to use your phone to control it, otherwise this is just a wireless thermostat/timer.

I have this - bought last year at Screwfix for £70 odd including the hub (it was a Black Friday offer).
I followed the instructions meticulously, watched a few YouTube videos and found it fairly easy to replace an ancient Drayton boiler controller and Honeywell thermostat.
I have experienced no issues with it - hot water and heating schedules are all working and can be adjusted from my phone from anywhere in the world. In another property I had a Google Nest and I think I prefer this for the money.
Maybe I've been lucky as I see there are a fair few negative reviews out there (often feel it's down to plumbers/electricians not being bothered to read the instructions properly)...

I've had Hive since 2015 and I've never had an issue with it. I'm still using the original hub and thermostat and both always work fine. In 2020 I bought Hive TRVs and I've never had a problem with them either. I've seen lots of bad reviews of both and I think sometimes it comes down to poor WIFI. One thing that annoys me is that the Hive Web App does not provide the same features as the Hive smart phone app, and when I tried to find out why and if it would change in the future, the support was non-existent. If I was looking for a new smart thermostat now I'd definitely investigate other options but overall I'm very happy with Hive.

They recently discontinued many of their products, including Hub 1, making them an unusable. I'd say AVOID.
L0L
Only security side of things and hub1 due to age. Rest of heating and home items are fine.

does this use machine learning to adjust times in accordance with how quickly your home reaches the target temps you set?
MrManwelo
No it doesn't. I had a Google Nest that did this, but turned off the feature as I found it useless and ended up costing me more money!

Same price for the heating only version, tho the picture looks wrong since it's the same as this one
yes, be careful, I ordered this last time around and thought I was buying the Heat+Water unit due to the way it was advertised. I ended up with a Heating only unit and because I'd opened the box had all sorts of problems returning it! (edited)

I've got one of these (it came with the property we bought). I wouldn't recommend it. It does the job as a basic thermostat but it can often be slow and without purchasing a new hub, there are no smart features. I'd also question ongoing support.
We'll be upgrading to a Nest thermostat when the time is right.

I’m in the same boat. Previously had a nest which was great, just moved into a house with a hive and it’s just not the same. I’m defo not investing anymore for the hub to get additional features that should already be built in. I’ll hang fire and replace with a nest when I replace the boiler in the next year or two.

I've currently got a dumb Honeywell 2-zone + hot water system - so would I need 2 of these?
I'm planning to integrate it with my homeassistant set-up, so not too bothered about external access. In fact I'd prefer not to rely on Hive's cloud servers...
Gorskar
Yes you'd need two. Our house was the same (ie 2 zone upstairs + downstairs) and had Hive installed, which consists of 2 of the original versions of this set (ie 2x TRV Controller and 2x smart thermostats) we also have a hub (only need 1 hub), so the system can be controlled over the Internet

I live in an old victorian house - had hive for 18 months. Incredibly flaky with devices going offline and boiler not firing when it should. Also had two of the valves go dead after less than 12 month use. I'd say avoid also.
senturpapa
Question for those who have this - I have a pretty old simple heating system. It's oil heating and when it's on it heats the hot water and the the house at the same time - for a period of time that I set on the timer. There's no seperation between the water and rads.
We are looking for something that we can turn on when we're coming back from holidays / short trips or turn off the heat when we forget and are away.
Will this simply turn the boiler on and off via wifi through our mobiles for a period of time?
Thanks in advance
Zimmy
It could if you also get a Hive hub.

Can I use this for my Worcester Bosch combi boiler?

Yes. If you want to use the app then you will also need to buy a Hive hub.

Don’t be fooled by the smart label, this is the worst thermostat on the market
It does not support opentherm like nest, which modulates your boilers flow temperature and potentially saving alot of money
Suede
I get your point, but for me what’s far more important is making sure your rads are balanced by locking those lock shields down to achieve around 10 deg delta T across each rad.
Also, try to run your condensing boiler as low as reasonably possible, between 50-60 degrees if you can so that it condenses.
I’ve found that most set ups can run around 50-55 deg in spring and autumn, but in winter you might find that you need to increase the flow temp to 60-65 deg, which is fine.
Open therm is nice, but the above is more important personally. And if you’re worried about overshooting target temp, just retract your target temp by around 1 degree etc.

Avoid! I spent nearly 3 hours trying to get a hive working, looks like it's issues with certain ISP providers in that the hub just wont connect to the application. There is no help available when things go wrong, hive blames the ISP's and the ISP's blame hive. Connection protocols aren't that difficult, but it's clearly a problem with hive being an collection of incompetent morons.
After finally giving up, I went out and got a google nest, and it was setup and working in about 20 minutes.
dazigster
Yeah I had problems too, but their online helpdesk guy just remoted in and fixed it. Took a few hours but they were very good and couldn't have been more helpful. Agreed, the kit seems to have a setup flaw.

These are so good

Brother has tado, I had nest in last house and now inherited a hive with latest house.
Would rather have nest or tado, hive is good but not as good as the others. Software (app) not so nice, disconnects from hub quite often (though does reconnect - its in the next room!) and sooooo slow to respond.
vixmony
I used to have disconnections as well, until hive sent me some signal extenders and all disconnections are gone. What I like the most about hive is the heat on demand, this means I don't have to monitor the heating, it just auto heats at my desired temp. I also have the hive radiators so can control individual rooms, again worth every penny,
weeross
Without the hub, it’s just a stat. No smart functions.

What's the difference between mini and the normal one in terms of functionality?
CatsWithThumbs
The mini I believe is lacking the physical buttons for boost mode etc which can only be done via the app. But with no hub I assume there would be no app...

I've had the hive heating system for years never had a problem works perfect also have the door sensors and smart plugs

I have had all sorts of issues with my Hive installation due to the signal not being strong enough for my property. Tried the Hive booster and makes no difference. Sometimes the heating fails to come on...... When it works its great and the app is very good but I would not recommend it unless you have a newer property with thin walls which won't weaken the signal. Look at Tado or other solutions.

Would this be any good for a static caravan that has a good Wi-Fi?
dazigster
I would be amazed if it's compatible with a caravan heating system. Their website has a boiler compatibility checker.

would an Amazon Echo Plus (Zigbee home automation hub), negate the need for a hive hub?
This is more for a multi zone it will work as stand alone thermostat but will need hub if not using as part of multi zone

Hive , Nest or Tado ? Or are they all the same ?
mattk
No they are not all the same. If you have an open therm supported boiler then I'd recommend Nest. It allows the boiler to ramp up and down depending on load. I think some Tado support this too but I'm not sure all their models do

Make sure that units aren't going to be at opposite ends of the house where RF/WiFi signals won't reach. Had to plan mine (which included a hub) carefully as router was ground floor and boiler in the loft. Had to run wiring for the receiver down to ground level. Also can be a pain to setup if they don't connect first time as the reset sequence is involved and has to be done in the correct order. Things aren't helped by multiple official Hive online guides, each one giving the units inconsistent names and giving different orders for rebooting. Took a while to work through these issues but once working it's a dream.

I dont fit hire or nest due to so many issues with them. Stick to Honeywell never gave me issues
Dddd89
Had one of these for a year when I moved into our house. Replaced our dumb Honeywell one. Got a BG engineer to fit it for 70 quid, took him like 10 minutes to do but he checked my tank and replaced a valve within the cost.
Overall I would recommend, although the TRVs are a pain to calibrate. I have the receiver unit plugged into our hub and had no issues.
llamapharmer
Thank you, ordered. Glad to see a genuinely good deal on a smart thermostat. Many of the others have gone through the roof. I don't need the bells and whistles of the nest, so this is far more cost effective for me and I already own a hub.
Also it's available on amazon for the same price. (edited)

How to find someone to install hive at a reasonable price? I have the kit (normal not mini) but I was quoted over £150 for fitting by an electrician.
WalkerboyUK
I just paid £270 for Hub, Thermostat and Receiver, with installation. That was all done by the guy that services our boiler.

My thermostat has broken so my house gets as hot as a hot deal. Over the years had numerous thermostats fail in different houses (salus, danfloss). Do people have better luck with Hive?
Gigasonix
My Hive has been working since 2015

Had our for a few years now had it as part of a new boiler deal had no problems at all.

Are there any other options that have a wireless thermostat portion?
CatsWithThumbs
You could also look at Netatmo, if you have a combi boiler and so don't need hot water control.
Had it in previous property and worked well. Unfortunately not suitable for current property as that needs the hot water control, so installed Hive instead (which also works fine)
szczepan.puchaa
I have a hive thermostat and receiver. Works perfect no issues. I am going to buy this set. Question is: will they interfere? p.s. I know how to wire it as long as the receiver just closes/opens the control circuit. p.s.2 I am aware the boiler will start as soon as one/both of them wants to fire it up
