Broadband External Box

Hi all.

Just had CityFibre come to my house to prepare for the installation of Full Fibre.

He came and told me his colleagues came previously but couldn't find the external cables, he had a look around and asked if a part of my house was an extension, I said it was a conversion (from garage to living space) and told me that the previous owners might have built around it and won't be accessible leading to me not being able to proceed with the upgrade.

Is a way to find out the history of construction of the house or who originally installed broadband to the house? I just need to locate where it would be even it is under ground but there doesn't seem to be any wires.

Thanks

I would assume that they have been given permission to use the ductwork that belongs to Openreach (Previously BT/Post Office) and now can't find where the cable comes up from the ground.

You can contact Openreach. They have a department who deal with third party construction work and can give you plans for where the cables lay in case you were planning to dig, in order to avoid damaging the cables. That would show you where they are.

As a simpler option, look in your house for the Openreach master socket. If a cable comes out the back of that, follow it to see where it goes outside, or if no cable assume it's going straight out the back and outside from there. That should take you to where the cable comes up from the ground outside.

I assume you have no 'Toby' box in the ground anywhere along your property boundary line? This could be at the front OR back of your home. If there's one of these they could still install but it would be a more difficult and destructibe installation. If they don't have one of these boxes then they simply won't be able to do your install.

In a small few areas they have an agreement to share ductwork belonging to Virgin Media. If that's how they were going to do it where you live, I hate to say that you might as well give up all hope now. VM in my experience will be of zero help with these things. In which case probably time to look into options like 5G Home broadband if you want faster speeds instead.

And finally as for past building, you can look at planning permissions that were requested with your local council. The plans should hopefully include any utility infrastructure that was covered or relocated as part of this build project.

Brilliant help. In great detail. I will contact openreach and the council.
