Thanks op, any idea which store is best for decent fruit and veg without spending a lot of money .. I thought that Aldi was cheap but last few months quality have deteriorated:( thnx

you should look around for wholesale markets, birmingingham have 'birmingham wholesale market' manchester 'new smithfield wholesale market' and london 'new spitalfields market'

Ive not been to the london one but i go once a month to the birmingham one and stock up, split what i get with the rest of the family and works out wayyyy cheaper, if you go youll actually see them selling stuff from tescos/asda/ even m/s cherries the other week were there for half the prices you get at the stores, its just a case of it being bulk buying, if you cant split 10 punnets of grapes between you or other family members probably not much point, but i HIGHLY recommend looking around- there will be other places i just know those three for sure.

So are they reducing their profit line, or crapping on the farmers?

Bags of Maris Piper spuds recently shrank 20% from 2.5kg to 2kg.
They also increased the price 20% from £1.39 to £1.65

Sainsburys, Tesco & Lidl have all matched on size & price.

Cartel, or err, a border which we're constantly reminded about "it wasn't about the money". So assume we're all cool with it.

key indicator for me is price of their cheapest onions - still 99p/kg, way overpriced

    should be around 60-65p/kg
    lowercase's avatar
Just looked online, ASDA still have bags of their "value" onions for 65p/kg A couple of months ago Aldi did their "value" onions for 55p'kg, then 60p, then 70p then they went up to 80p! in the space of about a month, now gone from their range entirely.

Is it me or are these still not cheap ?
    AC888's avatar
I was thinking :/ the same
  7. jhw's avatar
It's easy to cut prices when you almost doubled them beforehand
  8. Chrissy_minion's avatar
still too expensive. prices have shot up this past year!!! ridiculous

A lot of Aldi veg and fruit has a shelf life of literally hours. Lucky to get it home before it has wilted in some cases
    Baz_UK's avatar
Agree, had many bad experiences with Aldi fruit and veg. Just doesn't keep
  10. milkonesugar's avatar
Aldi own weetabix up again, 30p in one go this time to 1.99. Nothing goes up by 8p or 13p etc always a whole round number. We are being held to ransom and being taken for a ride with the super markets. They will be having Turkish barbers in them next !
  11. TheNibbler's avatar
Not cheap anymore, and quality is terrible. Availability is poor, service is nonexistent. Go elsewhere.
    blahblahblah1234's avatar
"Aldi price match" isn't a good strategy for supermarkets.
In my mind it means "Aldi price fix"!
  12. matth5182's avatar
They can slash prices all they like, it still turns to mush after a few days... and we live near one of the main distribution centres
    pako.pako's avatar
Couldn't agree more. That's why I stopped buying fruits and vegs (and anything) there few years ago.

Also, their products are not cheap (or even cheap-ish) anymore and I stopped liking their flavour/taste.

On the other side, ASDA's fruits and vegs are pretty good quality and they last looonger (a week for tomatoes is not a problem, outside the fridge). And ASDA's products flavour/taste are much more to my liking.

Good post. I hope other supermarkets will follow. A lot of supermarkets do Aldi price match nowdays. What I do from time to time is I
buy M&S gift card through gift card sites what saves me 6-7% and than use it for grocery shopping. Some products work out cheaper than Aldi and are far better quality.
    Alex_Colvill's avatar
    Ohh I like your style

    Might try that
and I’d get cash back on the purchase of said cards too
  14. yoj13's avatar
Unless you're going to use Aldi & Lidl's fruit & veg within a couple of days of purchase, simply don't bother. It can't be fresh even on delivery to them, complete waste of money. For me, Asda takes some beating followed closely by Tesco.
    chitychatty's avatar
That means you have to actually go in to an Asda (edited)

Aldi used to be great for your F&V no longer, 4p price reduction whilst they shrink , shop around
    Nanoo_Nanoo's avatar
Lidl's fresh produce is far superior.
  16. iGlad's avatar
    This ain’t hot.

The tinned pine used to be 35p a tin now it’s 99p ridiculous. (edited)
  17. stamfordblue's avatar
Heat for the effort put in showing all these reductions,
Unfortunately the prices are still too much.
  18. The_Fish_Knows's avatar
Easy to cut prices when you’ve driven them up close to 100%

Thanks OP. But which store is the photo from. I have never seen an Aldi veg aisle full and looking so neat and tidy?
The local market is the best place to buy fruit and veg.

Chantenay carrots were 49p a couple of weeks ago on their Super 6 offers, and often 49p at Lidl too.
    huhunter's avatar
During Xmas week carrots were 19p per kg
  23. haddock22's avatar
missed off celery which appears to have gone up 20p
  24. Jakena's avatar
They were these prices a month or so ago, so just going back to normal price. So unfortunately not really an offer, as they’ve just inflated prices to make it look like an offer when they come down in price again
    barnehurst's avatar
    Just like Adidas
  25. MildmanneredCalvin's avatar
Not a fan of Aldi's fruit and veg. I've switched to Lidl instead.
  26. PlayChase's avatar
Prices are through the roof on food. They can lie to us about (food) inflation all they like, because they keep the prices same for overpriced premium produce but most basic foodstuff has gone up in price by 50-100% in the last two years. This is especially visible for fruit and vegetables in terms of price increases. All other stuff - they just reduce package size and the price rise is less in terms of per pack, but just as as ridiculous per gram.

Cocktail prawns used to be £1.99 for 500g in Aldi now they are £2.79 for 275g.

Much prefer to pop over the road to Sainos, it is all price matched and at least I can get it home without it going off. Plus Top Cashback you can top up a voucher and get something back.

ALDI fruit goes off real quick unless you freeze them!
  28. squiby's avatar
You know what im fed up of? Price cuts. If they dont hurry up and start inflating again im never shopping there again. I want to pay high prices and they cant stop me. What has the country come to if you cant get into debt to eat? (edited)
  29. Maybe_Tomorrow's avatar
It is like both aldi and lidl are catching up in prices to anywhere else.. that's inflation for us.
  30. TeddyBB's avatar
You guys should try too good to go, it really works
  31. masterkik's avatar
Lidl seems to do better quality Fruit & Veg
  32. VforVendetta's avatar
It would good of they have an app like lidl and tesco. They are still the cheapest.
    Rico_1991's avatar
No it wouldn't, those apps just track your data to sell on for 'lower' prices. How about the other supermarkets just give the lowest prices to start with!
  33. barnehurst's avatar
6 big apples were 95p at tesco last week. Not seeing equivalent here
