NHS Blood Pressure Service

The NHS Blood pressures service (otherwise known as the Hypertension Case-finding Service) is an NHS funded Service that helps identify people over the age of 40 who may have undiagnosed high blood pressure.

The service is provided in-store, in the privacy of a consultation room by a trained pharmacist.

During the consultation, the pharmacist will check your blood pressure using an appropriately calibrated blood pressure monitor, provide your results and give you healthy lifestyle advice. If your blood pressure is high, the pharmacist will discuss the next steps forward which may include the offer of a 24-hour blood pressure monitor and/or referral to your GP.

If you require 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, you may be asked to come back for fitting of the machine at another appointment.

All results are forwarded onto your GP so that they can update your records accordingly

Before your blood pressure check

We need access to your upper arm to be able to take your blood presure so please make sure you come to the pharmacy wearing loose fitting clothing so that you can roll up your sleeve comfortably, or wear a short sleeve t-shirt.

Don't drink anything with caffeine or alcohol, eat a big meal or smoke for at least 30 minutes before your appointment . Try to avoid needing to use the toilet when you come in for your appointment as well - it can all affect the reading

I highly, highly recommend this. Got my aunty with a shocking high level, as in got told to make an emergency appointment with her doctor with a letter to give him. Who said "That high, I don't think so!" Doctor then tested her, and sent her straight to hospital where they admitted her. So top marks to Asda!

I think they are mainly doing this as the NHS pays a fee for every patient they see for this service (if I'm reading correctly £15?)

No doubt that is the same reason why my GP practice has suddenly out of the blue started spamming me with messages to get a blood pressure check (even though I get one at work every year and they receive the results of that for my patient file).

This all seems fair though if there is evidence that this picks up early issues that would otherwise be missed given the difficulty otherwise of accessing NHS medical services for routine check-ups these days.

Fair deal, it means going into Asda which is likely to raise my blood pressure in the first place!

Need to support supermarket pharmacies, they are vital - more vital than those shoddy stand alone pharmacies.
