Flight with 4 different airports, but it's worth the price : believe me it's still a great deal to be able to go there for £342 without a 30 hour flight.

The destination

In Tokyo for a week, be sure to visit:

  • 1. Senso-ji Temple: Tokyo's oldest temple, with vibrant markets nearby.
  • 2. Tokyo Tower: Iconic landmark offering panoramic views of the city.
  • 3. Meiji Shrine: Peaceful oasis surrounded by lush forest in the heart of the city.
  • 4. Shibuya Crossing: Experience the world's busiest pedestrian crossing.
  • 5. Tsukiji Outer Market: Enjoy fresh seafood and local delicacies.
  • 6. Imperial Palace: Stroll through beautiful gardens and visit the residence of Japan's Imperial family.
  • 7. Akihabara: Explore the electronics district and immerse yourself in otaku culture.
  • 8. Harajuku: Trendy neighborhood known for its fashion boutiques and quirky street style.
  • 9. Ueno Park: Relax in one of Tokyo's largest parks, home to museums, temples, and a zoo.
  • 10. Odaiba: Futuristic entertainment district with shopping malls, theme parks, and stunning waterfront views.

A fantastic price without 18 hour stopovers but VERY short notice, it's next week!

It's just an airside connection, you will need to go through transit security.

    Key things to note:

Any power bank greater than 10000mAh will be confiscated by Chinese transit security. They are also very picky about Lithium batteries in check in luggage so double check their specific rules.

The Chinese airlines secure the cabin and expect all passengers to be sat down and belted in for the last 45mins of the flight. Go for your last pee a good hour before landing!

China Eastern... They have a really poor reputation. No English communication, lost luggage, cancelled/delayed flights etc. Over 50% of the reviews are 1*. I have no personal experience with them but after reading some reviews we went for KLM.

I've flew with them recently. Shanghai to Heathrow. Plane was freezing, food not great and yes communication a problem.

This is a bargain, an absolute bargain. If you are on the fence and are able to do this, just do it! This is trip of a lifetime and amazing memories for a £342 flight...

Plus to boot, you can probably find a longer stopover in Shanghai, book a hotel and walk the waterfront across from the amazing Bund at night which is like something out of Blade Runner 1949, nothing else that looks like that skyline in the world as far as I'm aware...

Amazing trip but notoriously expensive overall

I was in Japan from the 15th feb to the 1st of march and it is defo not "notoriously expensive overall"
transport, food & drinks is all very affordable if not cheap (I live in London)

With these dates you might in luck for some early Sakura (cherry blossom) but it's usually mid March further south and usually the end of March in the Tokyo area for peak Sakura. You can of course jump on a train or get another flight south.

Check out the price of accommodation before you book flights, it's not cheap! And be careful of semi-double beds which are between a UK single and double in size. (edited)

I stayed in Akihabara last year for 9 nights and paid £420 (though I paid over there and the exchange rate had crashed to the level it is now but would have been just shy of £500 had I pre-paid).

It’s more expensive this year, but there are budget and lower end hotel chains like Tokyu Stay, Sotestu Inn and APA hotels that are often pretty reasonable bordering on cheap. Be warned some have smoking rooms and non-smoking rooms so best to check.

Plus you can stay in Yokohama, Saitama, Shinagawa or other neighbouring cities which can be cheaper though you need to factor in transport. The JR pass is not a good deal anymore since the price went up about 70% last October. The trains also stop around midnight in Tokyo so be wary of that; taxis are super pricey.

The advice I give to people planning a trip is avoid the US brands, they’re very expensive in comparison to ‘local’ brands for want of a better term.

And the Park Hyatt is shut until next year for refurb for anyone wanting to visit the bar from Lost in Translation/has a £1,000 per night hotel budget!

Oh my! If only I could afford it.. Gadget heaven of the world! It's definitely on my book it list.. They usually get their gadgets a good year or 2 before us.. I'd so love to live there! Good luck anyone who can manage to go.. Wish I could go with you..

have a look on google flights, they have flexible date options where it searches the cheapest dates e.g. 2 weeks in the next 6 months.

Not to mention Shinjuku station to see how to run a busy railway system, and the food department in Ondakyu to ponder who pays Y20,000 (£100) for melons!

If you can drive, spend a few pounds on an international licence at the post office and go on this - Street Kart

    YouTube video (edited)
    jonspurs's avatar
That looks so cool, is it safe over there? I wouldn't want to drive in a kart around London!

Great price. Cherry blossom season so flights are v expensive this time of year. Could pay + £1300 with other providers.

Me and my friend is flying China Eastern from Heathrow to Tokyo on April 1st, was £741pp with 2h 30m stopover in Shanghai, am kinda expecting it to be poor but as long as we make it to our destination without much issue we can deal with that.
    benjelly's avatar
That is a horrific price. I guess you needed a specific date?
  25. happenstance's avatar
Japan is about the same price as eastern european countries thesedays. Stayed in a perfectly fine tokyo hotel for £40 a night last year. This flight is a bit cheaper than the indirect China normal prices, but not much and it's easy to get it for 450.
    colinthepatterpillar's avatar
    What was the hotel please?
