I assume this will work in a x4 port aye? I didn't think m.2 cards used more lanes than that, I could be mistaken

If you're happy to have an adapter without a heatsink, you can get PCIe 4.0 NVME adapters for around ~$4.30 (£3.36) including VAT and free "5 day delivery" (which so far, I've always found to be accurate) from AliExpress.

They're also available for as low as $1.99 (plus VAT) if you're buying a few things via their pick 3 choice items deal page, which is how I got mine.

Personally I've never had an issue using one without a heatsink as the temps have always been fine without. YMMV depending on the NVME you use though. (edited)

Keep in mind they are x16 shaped cards, so won't fit in 4x or 8x sockets.

What is the max speed we can get?

It's a gen 3 adapter, so no point putting gen 4 in it. You won't get the full speed of a gen 4. (edited)

I just swapped PCs, going from a full size case to a SFF - these are great for SFF or low profile cases! I have the full size PCIe version which I can't use in my new SFF case.

Also used one for about a year, you will lose a tiny bit of performance but nothing noticeable.
    Minstadave's avatar
Shouldn't loose any performance, it is simply a dumb adaptor.

are there any available that split into two or more m.2 slots? i know that requires a special motherboard setting, but i only have 1x16 slot and 1x1 slots spare

Plenty - I have a generic M.2 NVME SSD To PCIE X16 Adapter 4 Port NVMe To PCI-e Host Controller and also a ROG Hyper M.2 Expansion Card. You can also get 1x1 slot adapters...

How come the pin alignment looks completely different on this PCIe card?
