Good afternoon, everyone!

As portable monitors are becoming more affordable and are quite useful (not just for gaming, though ), I wanted to recap what we should consider before choosing one.

Portable monitors are a versatile tool that can significantly enhance productivity and entertainment experiences, especially for those constantly on the move. They continue to evolve with new features and improved technologies, catering to a wide range of needs and preferences.

Size
  • Small: Typically ranging from 10 to 13 inches, suitable for ultra-portability.
  • Medium: Around 14 to 17 inches, balancing portability with a larger viewing area.
  • Large: 17 inches and above, offering a more immersive experience at the cost of reduced portability
Screen Technology
  • IPS (In-Plane Switching): Known for good color accuracy and wide viewing angles.
  • OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode): Offers excellent contrast, color vibrancy, and energy efficiency
Resolution:
  • HD (High Definition): Typically 1280x720 pixels, suitable for basic tasks and viewing content.
  • Full HD (FHD): A resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, offering a good balance of clarity and performance for most users
  • Quad HD (QHD): With 2560x1440 pixels, these monitors provide sharper images and are great for professional use and media consumption.
  • 4K Ultra HD (UHD): At 3840x2160 pixels, 4K monitors deliver exceptional detail and are ideal for creative professionals and gamers
Brightness:
  • Budget office monitors: Typically range from 250-300 nits, which may be sufficient for indoor use where lighting conditions are controlled
  • Mid-range professional monitors: Offer a brightness level of 350-450 nits, providing better visibility in well-lit environments
  • Premium HDR monitors: Can reach brightness levels of 1000-1600 nits, ideal for high dynamic range content and gaming, offering vivid colors and contrasts
Screen Refresh Rate
  • Standard: 60Hz, common among most portable monitors for regular use.
  • High Refresh Rate: Ranging from 144Hz to 300Hz, designed for gaming and high-speed applications
Additional Features
  • Touchscreen: Some models come with touch input for interactive tasks.
  • Built-in Battery: Offers independence from external power sources.
  • Connectivity: USB-C and HDMI ports are common, with some monitors offering wireless connectivity options

Just outta curiosity, what do people usually use these portable monitors for?

Pricing ain’t bad, but I just can’t think of a reason I need it

I have found so many uses for mine

    1. When traveling for work in ahotel I can watch videos on it
    2. I can connect it to my phone, bring an xbox controller and play games on it from the could or natively games like Fortnite run well
    3. connect it to a Nintendo Switch and play games with my son on a plane/train
    4. if I am working remotely and finding it hard to do my task on my tiny screen I break out the second screen
    5. I got a touch screen one so its like a big tablet when I connect it to my phone
    6. use it with Samsung dex on my S23, add a keyboard and mouse and its basically a laptop

Is that an actual OLED display for less than £100? What's the catch?

Another cheaper option if you've got an Android tablet is to use a MS2130 based HDMI capture card with Noir app play.google.com/sto…ree £5 pro version.
Works really well including power delivery with my Honor X9 LTE tablet and arrived within 5 days.

Hi, would this work with an android tablet as a second display for a laptop? (edited)

When they can get all the power needed and do video via one cable, they'd be great.... But they all seem to have external power needs.

I don't think so. I have one that can manage the power as well via a single USB C port.

I am surprised that how little of these monitor use IGZO panel for power saving as mine only use 10W at 4K+/500 nts. (edited)

Check out the Arzopa webpage directly.. There's often discount codes, and if they're aren't you can ask the chat and you may get one.
    redcup's avatar
Agree. I bought an Arzopa from Ali - it arrived damaged to due to very poor packing by the Ali store I chose. I then ordered from Arzopa direct - it was shipped double boxed and arrived next day - looked like it was possibly fulfilled by Amazon. It was only 8 pounds more than buying from Ali. (edited)

I got one from TikTok shop coming tomorrow for my Lenovo legion Go but I do like the look of that 17.3 one

What would I need (Raspberry Pi? Phone with HDMI out?) to use one if these as a sort of dashboard for the home, but with touchscreen? I'd want a sort of Android home screen that I could customise with widgets or e.g. camera feeds.
    Ridg's avatar
you can't do touch input over HDMI, you need a different channel e.g. a USB port that would act as the mouse; you can do touch over USB-C. There are plenty of dashboard pi projects so that would be my starting point

    Still looking for the unicorn.
    2K, 144Hz, 500nits or more.
Feels like there's a lot of low end stuff out there right now which reminds me of the initial Android tablets with resistive screens and low memory specs that flooded the market many years ago.

My Steam Deck and Laptops will just have to wait for their portable screens...

Not sure on the nits, but the uperfect qhd 144hz I have is excellent.

Anyone got any recommendations for a monitor with a hdmi input? Main use will be dex, with some casual gaming on the go. Any help would be most welcome.

Many comes with that HDMI to MIni HDMI cable. But for dex you would need a type C , I believe.

They dont seem to sell it but I got a 13inch 2.5k (2560/1200) 16:10 screen, its brill. Can't seem to find it or see anyone else who does these specs.

    What's the brand?
  17. crack_shot's avatar
when i was looking into this for the boy, it became quite apparent that this seems like playing the panel lottery
buying a cheap IPS gaming monitor that's 27 inches and in the same ballpark for prices made so much sense to me

the bang for your buck on IPS is insane

I like the 60hz OLEDs for the contrast but that 60hz is going to hurt looking for too long

What's the best value 14" or 15.6" portable monitor on aliexpress? (edited)

    Depends on many factors
    Screen technology
    Refresh rate
    Etc.
You need to know what's important for you and then find the one that fits into that.

    I'm after a 13 - 14" 4k OLED with touch. What's the best option?

Also I plan to use this with DEX from an S23. Some screens such as those from Arzopa, only show compatibility up to the S20. Is this correct?

I plan to use it as a portable laptop, mainly for watching 4k movies on the move. What's the best way of storing the movies? My phone will fill up quickly if I use it for 4k movies.
    Eanamule's avatar
For that sort of requirements, you might as well get a ROG Z13 with 4K screen.

Any good prices on 4K/UHD 15 inch OLEDs?
  21. Rocky69420's avatar
I have a favour to ask all you portable screen peoples! Can you please check in the settings for an image flip mode? Image mirror or reverse image. I would be really grateful. I need to be able to horizontally flip my image so it is completely reversed. It’s a weird request I know but it is actually a thing and if it is on your monitor I’d love to know.

Any suggestions for a decent graphics tablet?

I'm trying to get into drawing and need some recommendations for hardware/software.
    blaine's avatar
Huion tablets are nicely specced, cheaper than Wacom and decent software. Support windows ink too. Just got a 16” 2.5k for my wife for drawing and it’s really nice.  (edited)
