Why is this a good deal when you compare the spec to something like a pixel 8

That’s not really the point though is it. It’s a good deal for an iPhone 13 (if that floats your boat). A pixel 8 can never be an iPhone 13, so comparing is neither helpful nor relevant 🤷‍♂️

Bear in mind that this is a 4Gb RAM phone (... and I know that Apple RAM is "magical") but IOS will pivot to AI in future releases. The 14 has 6Gb RAM.

Crazy that Apple is so stingy with memory.

As someone who has had several iphones, ipads, Macbook Pro, iMac, Apple skimping on memory is by far and away what annoys me most. It always starts out fine, then eventually an OS update comes out which overloads the memory. To avoid this you're forced to pay obscene prices for something which was affordable 15 years ago! (8gb to 16gb upgrade in their computers). I only got in on Mac OS because I could upgrade with third party ram - i don't think I'd have bothered if it were today and just stuck with the POS that is Microsoft Windows. You'd think Apple would have learned their lesson after the iPhone 3g way back, after an OS update brought it to an unusable crawl - hundreds of pages of complaints as I recall. iPhone 8 (with its 2gb memory) loads the camera app about 3x slower than it did at launch. I paid over the odds just to get 16gb memory in an iPad, and it multitasks well, but it's daft anyone needs to do this. If anyone had told me 20 years ago that 16gb is considered “Pro” in 2024 I'd ask them to stop smoking.

I like tech in general but I was literally shocked as to how hard I found it the other day when trying to do something as simple as backing my son's photos up from his iPhone to our NAS back up drive. This was after his iCloud backup was full and photos were no longer backing up to the cloud. I am yet to find a straightforward and reliable way to doing what should have been a mindless plug, drag and drop or using a file explorer on my Android phone. My son likes his iPhone but that was a real eye opener for me.
