Is this trending right now? I literally saw this on YouTube yesterday and people were saying IJV firmware was the best for it. I even thought about finding a deal and posting it! This is the exact video I watched last night and he has a few videos about this radio.

Could this take a wired headset so could use it in a motorcycle helmet? Anyone know?

Yes any standard 2 pin Kenwood accessory should work, same pin connections as the baofengs so most accessories sold on Ali for the Baofeng (Mics, antennas, speaker mics, programming cables) should work. Every thing Baofeng I have tried has worked anyway.

K5 V8 is a bit nicer looking than this and I think the speaker is supposed to be a little better. These are usually on offer from between £10-15 + VAT
I am using EGZUMER V0.22 firmware on mine and it is very good.

You need to be a licensed radio ham to use this of the box.
This transceiver can be programmed with licence free frequencies, but the specifications of this transceiver make it illegal to use in the UK on even the licence free frequencies. (edited)

These can be used with an OFCOM Simple UK Light License which is £75 for 5 years. This will give you access to a range of frequencies on UHF and VHF Bands.

So does it come with the docking stand or just a cable?

Genuine question to people who are buying this, what do you use it for? I’m tempted to buy one but not sure what I’ll do with It - any useful guides any recommends?

If you attach it to a decent antenna in a high place you can listen to a lot of stuff. Don't expect much off the built in antenna. Decent antenna setups are not cheap, 5 metres of decent 50 ohm coax cable would cost more than the handset in this deal.

If you get a basic amateur radio licence you could become part of your local amateur radio scene, maybe you are close enough to access one of their repeaters. You could then talk to them about boring stuff, it's called rag-chewing. It would be a very limited beginners radio that would soon be outgrown if you got into the hobby.

I have a full licence and I'm not interested in "rag-chewing" with bored OAPs or local repeater "nets". I do a lot of home-brew building stuff and experimental antenna setups and stuff and use the OAPs to send me signal reports to test them. (edited)

Better off with the UV K5 (8) variant - better hardware for 42p more cost, still can install custom firmware and has usb c charging if you're away from the dock

There are lots of copies of this cable so I would recommend buying from eBay as you have a little more protection.

My friend had a cable and it was a cheap non brand cable but it didn't program the radio and left it with the screen blocked. This was fixed after he purchased another cable and reflashed the software.

One like this one should do the trick ebay.co.uk/itm…OPY

These are an amazing amount of tech for the price, great fun too, I made an antenna and joined a local net… it’s like CB was in the 80’s .
Technically not legal, but no different to CB, in that the band is legally free to use, but most people bend the rules equipment wise.

Number of prosecutions for misuse of the band since implementation? (Late 1990’s?). - Zero.

Only 1 left means you can only order 1, not that there is only 1 left in stock, it's how AliExpress displays it.

Will this transmit and receive on air band and marine band? (edited)
    E_T_C's avatar
UV K5 will receive on Airband from 108-130 Mhz , for Marine you can Transmit and Receive between 156 and 174 MHz, you will require a Marine Radio License to transmit on the Marine Band, OFCOM have the details.

Any links for a decent antenna upgrade ?
    E_T_C's avatar
Have a look for Nagoya NA-771 copies on ebay, you can get these for about £3-4 from China. They are copies but they seem to work well.

I also have NA774 which is a telescopic metal antenna which is easier to transport. £5

My friend has the Foldable Antenna for Baofeng UV-5R (it is tape measure inside a plastic cover) and that works okay for about £8 from ebay etc.

If the battery is in the device would the EMP fry this? it says usb charging, presumably the battery is in the device already with a partial charge even when boxed new.

This wasn't something I gave serious thought to until easter when i was in another country and my phones screen failed. it was so phenomenally difficult to do anything without being able to complete 2FA (check-in to my airline, order shopping, order a taxi, check my emails, log onto my bank, log onto amazon, use a travelcard etc).

I'm now concerned about what'll happen to the world if an EMP happened in an important area, or more realistic a solar flare permanently damages land based electronics. It has happened before, most recently in 1859 .... but even 5 years ago we wouldn't have been so tied to our devices as a form of ID as we are today.

How does this compare to baofeng UV5R
    E_T_C's avatar
It is a step up UV5R

    1) The modified Firmware is very good and easy to apply with a Baofeng Cable
    2) With firmware you have FM, WFM, USB &AM (inc Airband)
    3) Signal/battery meter is useful
    4) Charge Via USB C
    5) RX range with Modified Firmware 18-1300 MHZ with a few small gaps)
  24. zwarder's avatar
There is now a full band mod for these, however soldering skills are required

i want this and i dont know why either.

people more in the know... What useful stuff can i do with this?
    SOUTHWALES's avatar
Program in the 16 licence free PMR channels and you can talk to people in your area just like the good old CB radio days.

  27. Jetpac's avatar
Whats the sort of range on this thing? (i know its probably antenna dependant)

I remember having 2 walkie talkies in the 00's. I had one, my friend had the other & he was maybe 30-40 houses away. With him not being too far away, neither of us could ever pick the other one up, however I could pick up local taxis & other people a few miles away. They were great fun!
  29. TBC15's avatar
That's one on the way for just over £14.

I need something with long distance range. Currently using the UV-5R but very fuzzy and often disconnects when receiving signal in town. Any suggestions?
  31. gundo's avatar
I got this on a previous deal and I've been using it to listen to aviation band stuff. I bought a bigger aerial to improve the reception. I believe a proper airband receiver would work better but for the pittance I paid for it's fine (I live close to an airport so I can pick up most fairly easily). Airband receivers seem to hold their value on eBay very well so haven't taken the plunge yet and bought a proper one.

    £14.65 for me!
  34. Gavin01's avatar
So if this good for listening. To the planes.
    FineTuning's avatar
It says it covers 108-138 MHz AM so it should receive aviation communications.

Unless you are quite close to an airport you will only hear one side of the messages from pilots that are overhead. You need to be near airports to hear the ATC side from ground level. If the pilots happen to be transmitting they do status reports and instruction read backs, very quick and short messages and they are not very interesting. (edited)
  35. UnluckyForSome's avatar
Can I take this on flights and talk to the pilots?
    Subsh's avatar
I would avoid making such jokes
