A few years ago they introduced Game Pass Ultimate which includes access to a lot of extra games (300 or so) across Xbox and PC, Microsoft add a lot of their own games to game pass the day they are released. Game Pass Ultimate also let’s you play live with others without needing Gold.
Over the next few months Gold is being retired and replaced by an entry level version of game pass. Basically a rebranded version of Gold under the Game Pass name.
The reason this is so juicy is as we are in a transition period between the 2 products you can buy a gold subscription and it converts to a game pass ultimate subscription. If you don’t currently have Game Pass it will convert at a 3:2 ratio, so if you bought 3 years of gold, you’d get 2 years of Game Pass ultimate.
You can have up to 3 years of GPU this way so decide whether 7 months is enough and then look for the best way to start a GPU sub - maybe you'll see a £1 offer on xbox or worst case is the full monthly price for one month. Back in the day agreeing to recurring billing (turn off after) got another month added too. (edited)
3 months Gold is 50 days for existing members. But with no Ultimate subscription then these 3 month codes convert to 60 days. So, an extra 10 days per 3 month code.
Ordered 3 years & converted to 2 years GPU.
GPU Expiry date 9/9/25.
Best price I’ve seen lately.

However from the sounds of what you are saying and need for your Son, you need to get the code XBL Gold then wait until his current deal ends, use the XBL code and THEN also buy 1 month of GPU as a code or on his Xbox to convert the Xbox live gold into GPU at a rate of 3:2.
Hope I've got that right, as I say I'm out the loop also after 3yrs and need to renew. I'm sure someone with more recent experience will be along to help you also and tell me if I've advised you wrong or not.
Hope this helps
Is it always 4 x 3 month codes? (edited)
£4.28/month of Ultimate is good enough for me though
I currently have two three month codes applied to my account and I've heard horror stories of there being a hard-limit for codes
Sent 4 x codes
In total redeemed for 7 days short of 7 months.
Its 50 days for 3 months to extend against 60 days now for starting a new sub so its worth thinking about extending if you have a long time left so long as they send it as 3 Months codes. (edited)
Next charge on 6/6/2024, £12.99 including VAT
My gamepass was expiring on 14th August 2023
I redeemed 4x3 codes for xbox gold. Then convertered that gold to ultimate with £12.99 recurring and got just under 12 months? (edited)
You don't get a 1:1 ratio now it's 3:2. So 12 months of Gold becomes 8 months Ultimate.
1. Apply all 4 x 3 month Gold codes
2. Purchase one month of Gamepass ultimate
3. This will give Phillips Jr access to the entire gamepass library for 7 months.
We're taking Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, Slime Rancher, Terraria, Forza and many many more.
-Previously had Game Pass Ultimate (GPU) subscription. (And had previously turned off auto-renew)
-It had recently expired.
-Bought 3x of these 12 month passes for £87. Delivered instantly as 12x 3 months codes. (Accessed through ‘my orders’ on CD keys.)
-added the 12 keys to get 3 years Gold through Microsoft account (redeem code option).
-bought a further 1 month GPU from CDkeys for £8. (Note - there are stackable (required) and none-stackable codes - it warns of you select a none-stackable one)
-added the GPU 1 month which warns you of the 3:2 conversion and converts to 25 months of GPU from live, with this extra month.
-It gave me the option to get a free further month if I turned of reoccurring billing. OK then.
Total: £93 outlay (after £2 Top cash back) for 26 months. Works out about £3.60 a month.
Thanks for all the guidance from others. Just confirming what worked for me.
