First ingredient: water. That's how you know if ice cream will be rubbish or not.

Interestingly Haagen-Dazs is the only major brand I know of which doesn't use water (first ingredient is cream).

B&J also has cream as the first, but a lot less than Haagen-Dazs it seems. Similar level to this one (~25% BJ vs ~22% Ambrosia vs 39% for HD)

Is this full of palm oil? Their custard is rank since they went that way.

No palm oil listed in the ingredients of either flavour.

HD use the smallest number of ingredients. Just the stuff that matters for supreme taste. No other manufacturer compares. Have you ever been to their cafes?! They used to be here in the UK in the noughties, but now can only be found in select places abroad

Surely a proper egg custard is what you want rather than the very British thing of cornflour and vanilla flavour dyed yellow mixed with milk.

Honestly Ben & Jerry's always seems underwhelming for me as well. It feels too icy which is probably because of the water.

Yeah, used to love the Haagen-Dazs café in Leicester Square. Even their in-cinema concessions were (are?) good especially compared to Ben & Jerry's which is always so disappointing.

I noticed that too. so the main ingredient in this ice cream is water? I've made ice cream - with milk, cream, sugar and then whatever you want to flavour it with (or add smarties/choc chips etc.).
You could argue that the main ingredient in Milk is water, but they've listed Milk next, so it really is creamy frozen water.

Not sure what your points are. Are you saying since milk/cream contain water we might as well just use water?

Cream is anywhere from 18-60% fat whereas water contains no fat. Therefore cream adds richness which is required for good ice cream. It's in the name.

Secondly, water as the primary ingredient almost always indicates a more heavily processed product since emulsifiers like monoglycerides have to be added to give an artificial creamy mouth-feel.

Water also increases crystallisation when freezing and re-freezing.

Finally, at least in the case of Haagen-Dazs, they use "condensed" milk which means the water has been removed.

This still has a decent amount of double cream in it. The thing is water plus buttermilk powder will give you somethinh like buttermilk. I have no idea what this ice cream is like though.

    Couldn't care less what's in it,except beaver bits,really.

Whether the vanilla flavouring is beavery or not , this brand of ice cream uses hek 293 in its flavour production.
