START EDIT 2 - 28/7

TUI have confirmed island all is OK. Fires are a thing of the past. Pefkos and Lindos are fully open. You can now book these hotels again on the Tui website. Grab yourself a bargain while the weather is crap for the first week in the UK for August

END EDIT 2

START EDIT 26/7

I have just got off the phone to Tui and overnight things have changed.

My holiday to Pefkos has not been cancelled on 1st August. I can accept a full refund at anytime, so I have the best of both worlds!!! Unless things change for the worse I am planning on going.

Congratulations to those who got in on this deal as it is now completely risk free.

Tui are not accepting any new bookings.

We have friends going to the area in a weeks time and the apartment owner has said that all utilities are now live again and everything is open.

Fires are now smaller and further to the south and heading in the opposite direction, but obviously they are still vigilant.

This is confirmed by postings of holiday makers with boots on the ground, posting on Tripadvisor. They are saying the place is back to normality and just applying common sense vigilance

END EDIT

The international fire-fighting community has been drafted in and is on board, I think that's it for anything getting out of control again. Ignore the media sensationalism, that was yesterdays fish and chip wrapper.

According to direct reports of people on Tripadvisor still in Pefkos, the beaches are filling up, the waterskis are back and restaurants are open. Webcam here shows some smoke in the far distance.

mypefkos.com/live-camera/

Pefkos is a relaxed town with beautiful beaches and lovely restaurants. World heritage site of Lindos is 4 miles away by bus. And bus directly connects Rhodes Town so for a few Euros, you can have a day out in Rhodes Old Town.

Tui is a business and now trying to fills its rooms for next week, as they have been cancelled this week (so likely trying to fill the second week of people with 14 days holidays that did not go). The Greeks need our tourist Euros. Four hotels available.

Amfitriti - £310pp
Cosmos Maris (Lardos) - £327pp
Finas - £328pp
Ziakas - £338pp

1st Aug MAN-RHO 1845-0055hrs
9th Aug RHO-MAN 0210-0435hrs

Return flight is not the best, but what do you want to £300-ish. Plus trains start at 5am from Manchester Airport so you can get the train home rather than expensive parking or taxis.

Worst case, you will get a full refund if Tui cancel.

This week is the highest of high season weeks and would normally cost £1800+ per couple.

Cheaper than a week at home! Plus the forecast for Rhodes is cooler next week (highs of 32 degC), and the forecast for the UK is more unsettled cool weather.

Use the App and 'SAVEAPP' to get an additional £10 reduction, making it £610 per couple for the week.

Fires aside, surely a week in 40+ C weather is just not that comfortable?

Depends on the person and options around you. They're used to it there so you just got to know your keeping cool options. Only a small part of the island affected by 🔥 as stated above.

The problem is fire spreads. Good luck to anyone going.

Going by the news coverage, you'd think the holiday makers were the only people suffering. At least they hadn't lost their homes. Hope the Greek residents are safe too.

be warned, you room will probably end on the 8th so you'll need to out by noon ish then loiter for 12 hours for the return bus pickup.

We got caught out by this years ago.

Or spend the day around the pool and then head down to a lovely restaurant for souvlaki and a few glasses of vino blanco until the late evening before the coach picks you up.

Glass half empty or half full? (edited)

All this moaning about Brit holidaymakers being inconvenience when many residents of the beautiful islands of Rhodes and Corfu have lost their homes and businesses , thousands of animals and some residents and emergency workers have died . Not a matter for cheap jokes !

    Shame on you all !

Crazy to even post this... surprised the admins haven't pulled all holiday deals to Greek Isles until further notice.

What a bargain, the news are trying there very best to put us of travelling on a plane. The fear being pushed reminds of the CV nonsense and to be quite honest it's disgusting. Great deal btw, have some heat.

Why not? Put it in the booking engine to test it out.

Although this is cheap for people who holiday during the peak season but for me to be tempted I’ll be hoping for this to be half the price like the good old days of turning up at the airport for a cheap deal.
    Bobbins's avatar

It’s not half price. It is much better than that. 65%+ off.

It will be cheaper to holiday in February, so maybe book for then. (edited)
  14. beaufinder1's avatar
Already booked for February elsewhere thanks.

I was in Rhodes in Ixia this time last month. It was 30 degrees every day. The hotel said it would be 35 the next month which is often their warmest month. Id be tempted to go back again if it was cheap. Id get a nice all inclusive away from any trees and close to the sea or with lots of pools... Lovely Jubly!

Certainly looks like fire at the top of the picture. As of 22:13 BST there were a couple of people in the foreground taking pictures/video which suggests there was something worthwhile taking pictures of. Imagine that would be fire.

No surprise . Pefkos is about 2 hours fire travel from Lindos which has been effected and evacuated . Lardos ( my favourite on the island ) is about the same from Pefkos . All are in danger ! If it gets into the mountains above Lardos then god help them all !

    Shocking TUI well done
  21. 69philip0's avatar
Heat added 🔥 oops just started a fire there 🔥🔥🔥
  22. samsmith66's avatar
Good luck. You probably end up in an evacuation centre. You are not wondering why the holidays are suddenly so cheap? The hot temperatures and the risk of fires are not going away.

Thanks. I’ll follow Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice rather than you hyperbole
  23. Topper1900's avatar
Surely until temperatures drop dramatically, or there's some rain in Rhodes etc, there's always a danger fires could break out any where on the islands? It's baffling why anybody would risk their lives, or at least their holidays, booking a holiday at present

That is right. Any Greek Island, or for that matter any part of southern Europe is at risk of a wild fire. Better lock yourself away at home and watch the telly, as it is not safe to risk any travel to souther Europe.
