Can anyone explain to someone who hasn't been in the gaming world for over 10 years how these screens differ from large OLED TV's?

Can I not just plug into my 4k TV to game these days?
    TechFiend's avatar
TV's have gotten better and are pretty awesome.

But, the smallest OLED TV is a 42 inch, which is pretty big. No height or tilt adjustment, which for me is very important in a monitor.

Also, they are designed for different purposes. There's controls to hand on a monitor, which I use multiple times a day Vs a TV which has a remote control, which is fairly clunky versus a proper user interface.

Also, monitors are designed in a way that you can sit relatively close to them - that is mainly how monitors are used. TV's aren't designed with close viewing in mind at all. People do it, but doesn't mean they should.

Also, most people don't have a setup able to run 4K properly which means they'll go down to 2560 x 1440. Ultrawide is a different experience to your standard aspect ratio.

There's loads of other things but those come to mind. (edited)

There is also the AMEX £100 off a £750 spend if you have that saved.
    phannon86's avatar
Thanks for calling that out! I was eyeing this up a few months ago and decided against (currently have a 3420), but this discount plus the extra hundred makes it the bargain of the year. Ordered!
  3. strooptick's avatar
Pretty good deal, if you have AMEX look through your offers to see if you've got a £100 off £750+ spend. I have it on my BA card
  4. ucborz's avatar
If only it was qd-oled like the 34" model would have gone for it.
    Minstadave's avatar
    I'd love a QD-OLED this size/res. The 34" is almost perfect

Having tried OLED there's no way I'd go back to IPS/VA. (edited)

Excellent monitor. Bought a spotless customer return last year for £719. Takes up a lot deskspace than the 49", but you get 1600 vertical px, which as a programmer during the day made the monitor a lot more appealing
    khirsah's avatar
Just whack it on a monitor arm for £50x being able to move it around and reclaiming desk space is well worth it. Mine is invision

These monitors are way too expensive, hopefully in 10 years they will go down to a reasonable amount
    AnkerMan's avatar
You might be dead in 10 years. Live for today or at least the next Black Friday deal
  7. SirBlackhand's avatar
Been using this constantly for over a year. It is the best non-OLED monitor I have ever clapped eyes on. Worth every penny
  8. Rup's avatar
Think an 42/48 OLED Tv would be better and cheaper.
    Dusty666's avatar
Totally agree using 42" C2 and it is absolutely stunning.
  9. Snitsaros's avatar
Want this primarily for work with a little gaming. Is it a good buy for that?
    Bigmonty69's avatar
I use it for gaming and work, excellent for both. I split the screen sometimes and have excel spreadsheets on both halves.

    Just do it

I have the oled 34" by Dell and the picture quality is just beautiful. I was disappointed at first then after playing around with the settings realised by default it was running 59hz and without HDR. Set it to 175hz and HDR 1000 and was blown away by how beautiful games look. Honestly, I don't see how future monitors can improve much more than this. 48542020-HuDev.jpg

Was in the exact same situation, ordered the G9 Neo during my disappointment and now I’m conflicted with which to return
  12. ultraal2003's avatar
Is this no comparison to the 34” oled AW3423DW ? I’m holding out for Black Friday for that model atm.
    slothcore1's avatar
Not used this exact monitor but having using a standard OLED and the Alienware QD OLED monitor going back to IPS is a no go. I think for this amount of money you should be looking at OLED panels.
  13. cooldude01's avatar
This is a brilliant monitor. I have it and can highly recommend it.
  14. TechFiend's avatar
I have this screen currently and it's fantastic. I prefer it over my old G9.
  15. roflausage's avatar
    Awesome monitor
  16. Dr_OmniSpank's avatar
Ah Dell. Brilliant monitors, terrible prebuilds.
  17. Xtrykyr's avatar
for that price just wait for a 49 inch ultra wide
  18. N.T's avatar
Perfect resolution and size IMO a great screen had it for a year now. Had an LG c1 as a monitor before that and it was too cumbersome and impractical. Not interested in going back to the 34 inch just for OLED. If they did a 38 inch oled I'd be interested maybe later.
  19. Yueyang's avatar
How much you bet most people buying this have a GT710 rig hoping for 4k 120fps
  20. DarrylJohn's avatar
    Sweet baby jesus.

Dell are also £100 off on orders over 750 on Amex.

AH... I thought this was the QD-OLED. (edited)
  21. The_Guru's avatar
Oled is definitely better but I'd be worried about burn in.
    Minstadave's avatar
Covered by Dell's warranty. Seem one or two reports of it so far. Mine is fine.
  22. gold3n_dragon's avatar
I'm waiting for the QD Oled.
  23. Triumerate's avatar
Hopefully this sale signifies the arrival of the 38 inch QD OLED.
    Minstadave's avatar
No rumours of a 38" panel in production yet.
  24. Oystercatcher's avatar
Don't waste your money. Wait for Qd-oled.
    Lerring's avatar
Depends on use case! I need a monitor for heavy text usage and the QD-OLEDS have some text artifacts
  25. dodsonchris's avatar
I had this, still the annoying IPS glow noticeable at times, but actually really good for both work and gaming. It suffered an unexplained crack in Feb & I was heartbroken - took a stab at the 3423dw, obviously amazing colours and brightness, no glow or ghosting, but the smaller size hurt a bit and I actually find text a bit harder to read on it when working. (edited)
    Dr_OmniSpank's avatar
There wasn't a controller sticking out of the screen by chance?
  26. alphaomega16's avatar
Damn, this thing costs nearly as much as my 55" LG OLED TV did.
    TechFiend's avatar
But, you surely understand that you are comparing a monitor to a TV right?
  27. ultraal2003's avatar
On the Dell early Black Friday deals they didn’t have the Alienware Monitors on sale, but I bit the bullet and got the AW3423DW 34” Oled for 696 (20% Dell discount, points £15,Amex £100,Quidco £69). I don’t think I’ll wait for the AW3423DWF as it seems too cut down lacking both the Gsync and hdr 1000)

Though I’ll probably end up kicking myself on Black Friday when HUKD offers it to you lot for £500
    zeb.mattey's avatar
is it as amazing as we all imagine it to be?
  28. thedynasty's avatar
Any News of whether Dell are releasing this 38" model with the Samsungs QD-OLED panels?
  29. warlockuk's avatar
I think I looked at this a while back and wrote it off for the either the ghosting or the contrast - I forget which.
I *did* briefly have a 49" uuuuuultrawide thatw as basically the resolution of two 1080p monitors side by side and functionally it was just terrible. Input switching was heinous and barely worked, image was ehhhhh, went back the day after I received it.

With VA/IPS/OLED/QLED there's always trade offs. Ghosting vs quality of blacks vs response times etc. This one for me is fairly average. But if you're in the market for a 21:9 with a 4k monitor's pixel width there are far worse options than this.
  30. MontBelzoni's avatar
What are these curve screen like as a TV if you are sat 2m away? Or do you really need be closer
    TechFiend's avatar
It's a monitor, so no speakers and no remote.
  31. Test_TestFqF's avatar
I got this last year for £660 with dell code and £100 off £750 amex offer - very very happy with it highly recommend it if you can stack these offers.
  32. Daves_mate's avatar
Good for graphic work Affinity Designer/Photoshop type)?
    Shahintr's avatar
Check website “rtings” for a better idea on colour accuracy - you may have issues with the blacks looking grey. The screen size helps with productivity and multi-tasking.
  33. JohnNg's avatar
I really want this, but can't justify it
    TechFiend's avatar
Look out for a used one, that's what I did. Paid about half this and it still has warranty.
  34. howard9's avatar
Fantastic screen, got one on launch for this price and have never regretted it. Will do until QD-OLED screen come out in this size and res. (edited)
  35. Scott_TurnerR6v's avatar
How long does the Amex offer last until

    Check your offers!

Damn only got Acer Predator X34P. Is that better? (edited)
    yant's avatar
    Well it’s 38” and 1600p while the X34P is 34” and 1440p
  37. stone3t's avatar
The resolution is lower than my 28 inch. I’ll give it a pass thank you.
    PhoenixS's avatar
Lol... your loss. Resolution isnt everything
