Joking aside, it's really not. I run a Mac for work with 32GB and it usually runs at around 25GB used most of the time. That being said, I'm a software engineer, usually running quite a bit of stuff. I do kinda wanna buy one of these for watching YouTube in bed, though... The Apple silicon tends to run without spinning up fans even under high load which I'm finding one of the most appealing features in a laptop nowadays.

Get a 12.9 IPad Pro if it’s for watching stuff in bed. It has at least 8 GB ram and possibly 12 and M2

I would wait 3 months or so until the m3 airs are 10% off, worth the difference imo.
Anti-smudge finish (affects any non-silver colour) better WiFi, 2 external display support, better performance.

(Not to say m2 isn’t great, and sure any of those base spec machines hit a limit when you try to push them) (edited)

Why would it be suddenly cheaper after 3 months?

The storage speeds are shockingly poor compared to the m1s

Very tempting price but 256Gb storage and 16Gb ram in 2024 it is a NO NO

Yep, you really have to get 512gb storage and 16GB RAM at a minimum. The base model is quite bad

Isn't the 2024 edition with the new M3 processor only about £100 more?

    + £300 I believe

I bought it yesterday directly from Apple Store and I’m very happy with the performance and speed, just needed something to browse the web, check emails etc. It’s really more than enough for me. I don’t expect £999 laptop from ‘designer’ brand to be coping with Pro or Advanced workloads, there are different models for that.

How much did you pay? Why go for m2 when the m3 is £100 more?

Please be aware that Apple are still selling the M2 for £999. If you are able to access education pricing, they'll take 10% off that (any students/teachers in the household?). That'll work out a few pounds cheaper than this and you'll be able to add RAM, which would be a good idea.

Please also be aware that the M3 came out this week and it starts at £1099 with a very similar spec (presumably £990 after student discount). M3 is not a massive leap from M2 but will presumably hold its value better, given this machine will be two years old in early June.

8gb of ram is a joke

Not used a MacBook have you.

Be aware that the 256GB version of the M2 MacBook Air is deliberately throttled back compared to the 512GB model...

    digitaltrends.com/com…de/

"Short answer: buy the 512GB model. Shortly after launching, reviewers found out that the base 256GB model uses a single NAND chip for storage, while the 512GB model and even the M1 MacBook Air use two chips. That results up to 50% slower SSD performance, making the 256GB model feel more sluggish as it struggles to read and write data to the hard drive."
