For general word processing/office based apps, internet/email stuff it's a great machine, been using mine for 18 months now that way and never felt the limitations. If he's running memory or CPU heavy apps then he may run into problems.

8GB and 256GB SSD...too low. 512 should be new base line...and 1TB should be comfortable.

Nice deal for everyday use users as apple are great machine and can last for 10yrs plus easily. (edited)

The machine runs fine with 8GB, the only problem is it writes a lot to a non replaceable SSD. So eventually all of these will fail because of that SSD, but some stats I saw going around years ago was it will take average users like 20 years and the most hardcore users like 5. So other than a waste issue, I don't see it ever being a problem for 99.9 percent of people.

I just wish'd Apple stopped soldering ram and storage to the board, but they do it purely to upsell you from the start as they make bigger margins that way.

I've used this model and played games like Hitman 2016 on it just fine and had like 50 tabs open and other programs. The ram is not going to be a problem on Mac OS unless you're like doing heavy video editing or whatever.... But at which point buy a Pro. (edited)

To be fair, the Air wouldn't be as thin as it is if the HD and ram were replaceable, so it's not purely to upsell
