Brand New and high spec M1 Max MacBook Pro.

Same price as the lower spec versions.

A newer version of the M2 Max in this Spec would be north of £5000 so seems almost too good to be true.

Edit: Just received the device. Came brand new, sealed and in pristine condition as expected. Battery health 100%.

Laptops direct were pretty decent. The device was classed as a ‘high value item’ so they rang a few times with updates and were very communicative.

Details

MacBook Pro delivers groundbreaking processing, graphics, and machine learning (ML) performance whether running on battery or plugged in, as well as amazing battery life - enabling workflows previously unimaginable on a notebook. It also features a stunning Liquid Retina R display, a wide range of ports for advanced connectivity, a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, and great audio system. Shattering the limits of what a notebook can do, MacBook Pro is designed for developers, photographers, filmmakers, 3D artists, scientists, music producers, and anyone who wants a powerful notebook.

Scary faster
M1 Max delivers two times faster graphics processing and double the memory bandwidth of M1 Pro. And it has a dedicated media engine for decode and two for encode - with up to two times faster video encoding - and two ProRes accelerators for even higher multistream performance.

You can do this all day
Ferocious performance with game-changing battery life - that efficiency is the magic of Apple silicon. MacBook Pro delivers the same amazing performance whether it's plugged in or not.

The coolest part
Advanced thermal systems move 50 percent more air, even at lower fan speeds. And thanks to the efficiency of Apple silicon, the fans never turn on for many tasks you do every day.

Liquid Retina R
It features Extreme Dynamic Range and a million to one contrast ratio. HDR content comes to life in photos, video, and games - with refined specular highlights, incredible detail in shadows, and vibrant, true-to-life colors. Each display is factory calibrated and features pro reference modes for HDR color grading, photography, design, and print production.

ProMotion
ProMotion comes to Mac for the first time, making everything from scrolling through a web page to gaming super fluid and responsive - while also reducing power consumption. With refresh rates of up to 120Hz, the adaptive technology automatically adjusts to match the movement of the content. ProMotion video editors can also choose a fixed refresh rate that precisely aligns with their footage.

Heads up - the camera's 1080p HD
Staying connected is more important than ever. That's why the MacBook Pro camera has double the resolution - 1080p - and uses a lens with a wider aperture that lets in more light. Together with a larger image sensor that has more efficient pixels, the camera delivers two times better low-light performance.

Three studio-quality mics
Thanks to mics with an up to 60 percent lower noise floor, MacBook Pro can capture even the subtlest sounds. And the three-mic array uses directional beamforming so your voice always comes through loud and clear.

Six-speaker sound system
Four force-canceling woofers reveal notes up to a half-octave deeper and fill the room with up to 80 percent more bass. And the high-performance tweeters project clearer, fuller vocals.

Spatial audio
Thanks to the room-filling six-speaker system and advanced algorithms, MacBook Pro supports spatial audio when playing music or video with Dolby Atmos, creating a sophisticated, three-dimensional soundstage. Combine that with the Liquid Retina R display, and it's like having a portable theater.

More plugged in than ever
Transfer photos and videos with an SDXC card reader. Connect to TVs or displays with HDMI output. Listen using a 3.5 mm headphone jack that detects and automatically adjusts for high-impedance headphones. Connect to high-speed peripherals or displays with three Thunderbolt 4 ports. And fast-charge using the quick-releasing MagSafe 3 port.

More pixels than ever
Connect up to three Pro Display Rs and a 4K TV with M1 Max. Or connect up to two Pro Display Rs with M1 Pro.

Pro power meets pro keyboard
For the first time, Magic Keyboard brings a full-height function key row to MacBook Pro - with the tactile feel of mechanical keys that pros love. It includes keyboard shortcuts for Spotlight, Siri, Dictation, and Do Not Disturb. And Touch ID has a tactile ring that guides your finger for a fast, easy, secure way to unlock your Mac.

Looks to be an excellent price for the spec. Not sure what this would’ve been when it released but the current M2 model (albeit more CPU/GPU) is over £5k

Would have been over £5k on release

Great deal! I use this for work (same specs apart from ssd 1tb vs 4tb) Overkill for 99% of people, but I can edit 6k raw footage without proxies and have had a 3hr+ timeline with no issues. Even coming from a well spec’d PC, I’ve been impressed with the capabilities of this being a laptop. For comparison, 64gb ram, M1 Max and 1tb ssd was nearly £4000, and to go up to 4tb storage was something ridiculous like an extra thousand. So yeah, this is a bit outdated, but still flies and relatively, is a good price.

What would be a good entry level laptop for learning photo and film editing. Looking at MacBook air M1 8gb 256 but may struggle?

I see a lot of bad reviews about laptops direct. Broken devices, empty boxes, pure customer service.

Did anyone face such kind of things?

I’ve seen a few negative things here and there but it’s generally reviewed pretty well on Trustpilot, including positive recent reviews.

I’ve purchased the device and it’s supposed to be arriving today so will report back with an edit after I get it.

Now we’ve got the 16in incarnation, equipped with an M1 Max chip (10-core CPU; 32-core GPU), 64GB RAM and 4TB SSD. Short of ramping up the SSD to 8TB, this is the MacBook Pro’s top spec. It clocks in at a cool £4699.

Lol.... 'run'.... yes, yes it can 'run' them... about the same speed as a £500 PC.... but yes.... it can 'run' them.

How does this Macbook Pro 2021 16" M1 Max compare to the new 16" Macbook Pro with 16gig ram (not max). I would use it for video and music work.
    joedredd's avatar
The M1 Max is currently incredibly performant for everything anyway. Have you seen videos of how many audio plugins on Ableton these can run? Personally I'd say memory and hard drive trumps M2 CPU, especially for video.
I currently have an M1 Max 32Gb 1TB which ploughs through 4k HDR in Final Cut Pro - but eats hard drive. Trying to use external storage for video editing is much slower and makes you realise just how incredibly fast the onboard storage is on these. (edited)

this looks a deal for professionals who will use this specification... it'll retain it's value well with that spec and the amount of discount. I don't think people factor it in; when you're finished with Macbooks you can get back 60-70%+ what you paid on eBay, making it's lifetime costs more like £500-1000 assuming 3-4 years... if you use its capability for an IT profession or digital job paying £50K+ what is ~£250 a year? This amount of laptop, 4TB SSD just seems a steal for the price. If I had more money I'd get this.

Check eBay completed listings for 2019/2020 Macbook pros with 2-4TB SSDs to see some selling around £1500 - their original RRP was similar and these are pre-Apple silicon (not ruling out another revolutionary upgrade, but the switch to M1 seemed a once in a decade level event).
    HOTPOT's avatar
From my experience Macbooks holding their price is not true. My first Macbook Pro (around 2015) that I paid around £1600 for became quite a loss. Firstly the SSD became faulty after three years, just as I was preparing it to be sent to a buyer on EBay. So the cost of replacing that, and selling it again meant I only got £300.0 from my original £1600. I look after my laptops and the unit was as 'brand new' with a box the same as the day it arrived.
Had I bought it at Apple prices I would have lost money.

My second Macbook Pro cost me £2000 brand new. Around £400 less than the Apple price. It is absolutly pristine condition with the box in brand new condition. I put it on Ebay for just under £700.00 and no one made a bid. So I have no idea what it will go for, but it will be a hefty loss.

To all intents and purpose, both laptops/box packaging could have passed as brand new.

So no, from my experience, Apple do not hold their price, and as you see from my first laptop, are not that reliable. It is the only laptop in 20 years that failed me.

However at the moment it seems it is the only laptop that will do the job I need, so I will have to buy another.

Roll on when Windows laptops have silicon, and competition kicks in. (edited)

Good price for this spec compared to Apples list price for the model. Probably vastly over specced for a laptop to my mind though.

Mine arrived today, ordered off ebay for £5 more but got back £15-20 in nectar from their boost promo and another £25-30 1% cashback from tcb (sold out now on ebay I think)

If you can afford this. You're pretty much set for the next 10-15 years.

    Only one year warranty :/ :/ :/
    PeacePipe's avatar
Maybe you can extend it directly with Apple once you register it?
  16. windwoo's avatar
The only reason this can be considered hot is because Apple’s pricing is so stupid in the first place. You can’t add your own RAM or storage so you have to accept the stupidly high markups.

  20. Anand_Rajan's avatar
I am upgrading from my old MacBook pro almost 10 years old now, upgrading for more power and space and this one is a steal price considering apple pricing mode for additional ram & storage. This might be a overkill spec, but definitely looking to have it for next 10 years.

Thanks for posting , ordered mine.

Good find. I paid £3.2k for the M1 Max 32GB 1TB which I got at the end of 2021 when it came out and it runs like a dream. Quiet as a mouse and doesn't break a sweat however hard you push it.

ordered on Friday morning with delivery for today. Got a text yesterday stating it's out of stock even though website states in stock. Silevr also out of stock. They offered silver to me with saying it's in their warehouse so I asked for next day delivery, they couldn't do that as they are still awaiting stock. Work that one out!
    Asked for a refund.
    agent_pires's avatar
Figured they would lie about stock. They did that to me with my monitor I ordered back in 2020.

Very very good spec for the price but yeah supplier I've heard things I've only used "appliances direct" which is basically the same company to buy a monitor and they lied about it being in stock so had to wait an extra week otherwise everything was ok. I've got a 2TB version from work and this laptop is amazing. Just wish there was a Windows equivalent. (edited)

It's be easy to install windows on this and have a dual boot setup. More than enough space available for 2 OS's
  31. BrianButterfield's avatar
If only it had HDMI 2.1..... I need that for the monitor out and Apple skimped on 2.0.
  32. benchesh's avatar
Can anyone tell me how you know this is the M1 Max with 32 GPU cores specifically? This as well as the space grey model someone linked above?
    joedredd's avatar
    According to : macrumors.com/gui…ax/

There are two M1 Max variants, one with a 24-core GPU and one with a 32-core GPU. The 32-core option is the high-end option available in higher-end machines, while the 24-core GPU is exclusively available as a build-to-order option.

With this being retail I am expecting 32 cores.
