Used this at the weekend for 1 hour, then black smoke came out of it, then it made a pop noise and it's stopped working, (edited)

Hardly, I've had this for a few years now it's solid and reliable.
Don't forget B&D are a massive power tool maker owning DeWalt, Stanley and Irwin and that's just three of the brands they own.

The lack of the "finger extension" would rule this out for me although I guess that you can buy them separately. It's a really useful add on for getting into corners etc.
