DO NOT UPDATE these beyond FireOS 7.3.2.1 if you want to debloat it. Here is what the developer of Fire Toolbox told me just a few days ago: forum.xda-developers.com/t/w…049

Otherwise, great tablets

Worth getting now and returning if there's anything better on prime day 👌🏻

Or even set your delivery day as Friday and cancel if you end up ordering something on Prime day instead! (edited)

A tip, especially if you have kids: Buy a magnetic charger connector and leave it plugged plugged into the tablet permanently, and use the magnetic cable connection when charging. It saves wear and tear on the charging socket. Only drawback is one slight tug and the cable drops off - but it's fine for overnight charging. The connector I have is very shallow and compact like a tiny USB dongle, not one of the fat rotating ones.

    50534468-GDXv8.jpg
Another tip with Amazon Fires is, if they decide to stop charging beyond a certain point, or become unstable then: Do the hard restart by holding the power button for about 15 seconds till it goes off, then turn back on. It solves a few glitches. Finally, prune out unused apps, too many clutter the memory. (edited)

it's - Fire Toolbox V31.0 All-In-One Toolbox for Fire Tablets! yes it actually works, it does not root the device, but disables all the bloatware, thus allowing you to install a launcher of your choice, it has a few already for you in the toolbox, iv installed google play as well, various apk files programes etc, i would add an sd card and put all your apk's on it and other files, then use a file manager to install those apk's, use google play and download a file manger first, some will be asking where do get apk's erm, ill let you work that out, apkpure is one place there a many others. We've got one of these and I've ordered another for the house. This tablet felt like a huge step up over previous Kindle tablets. For basic use it's hard to fault.

I want to set one up for my mother in law who wants it for games and internet. If it's not possible to put play store on it do I have to set up an Amazon account for her to download games and is this possible without credit card details at all
    Thanks
    MDL199's avatar
You will have to set up an Amazon account for her.

Adding the Playstore is as easy as downloading 4 APK files and installing them in the right order. You can do this without a computer just open the silk browser on your Amazon tablet.

    Strange question for you techies.

What would stop me using this as a sat nav / android auto screen in a campervan?

I have unlimited data so apart from losing signal occasionally I can't see any drawbacks.

Was looking at buying an Atoto double din stereo

Limited-time deal: [9inch] ATOTO A6 PF A6G209PF Double-DIN Android Car Stereo, Wireless CarPlay & Android Auto, IPS Display, Dual Bluetooth, HD Rearview with LRV, 2G+32G amzn.eu/d/f…QqE

but with a 3.5mm jack lead and mount that I can happily make up this seems like it would achieve the same thing??

    Serious question btw.

There's no GPS as mentioned below. I Google-fied it, then linked it via bluetooth to a Garmin Glo2 with GPS Connector app. It ran TomTom Go app absolutely fine on that set up. Until I dropped the tablet and broke it...
  13. renagade27's avatar
Actually never tried that but I would imagine if you loaded films onto the microsd card and run it through VLC (free on Google play) I can't see why not.

I use it for Netflix, YouTube and general browsing.

I had Fire 7 and it was great for kids so I upgraded it for two Fire 8 HD and they were great but started freezing and shutting Roblox so again upgraded to Fire 8 hd plus which are more than enough for children. Seeing the battery life running great, charging quickly and no issues, I got this one Fire 10 hd for myself. It was brilliant for the first 2 years and then it just started freezing. It reached the point that I barely could reset factory settings as I had less than a minute to do that before it froze again after restarting. After a few weeks it just died.
And I was not a heavy user, watching Netflix and browsing sometimes.
My children are making the most of theirs but it looks like Fire 10 hd has issues :/ the last one I bought and 1st to die.
I guess it's refurbished for a reason. (edited)

2 years of use for £65 is a bargain. I've had my 2019 refurb for 2 years, same price, and it's still got 8 hours youtube/prime video use in the battery.
  15. Dalkirst's avatar
The pink one is even cheaper
  16. NorthOsiris's avatar
Thinking of planning ahead and getting the kids these for Xmas.

Does anyone know what the odds are of these being cheaper for prime day?
    Charlie_Phipps's avatar
You can order this, set for delivery after prime day and then cancel the order if anything better pops up. Saves sending it back
  17. marylandcookie's avatar
Just received mine, it's literally new!! Absolutely chuffed. Used the toolbox to disable some the pre installed apps, installed Google framework and playstote and disabled updates. Just need to get a case, screen protector and an SD card
I was so impressed, I ordered another for myself 😁

How does the Playstore run? Considering doing the same for a proper YouTube app
  18. marylandcookie's avatar
    I used this video:

Make sure you do not connect to WiFi when you've booted into your tablet otherwise it'll update and you'll be locked out from making any changes.
On boot up, select your language and then it'll ask to connect to WiFi, pick any WiFi, then cancel to go back one step, you'll then have the option to skip set up. You can then follow the video tutorial. (edited)

Is it worth it for an older relative who doesn't have Prime?

They want something bigger than their phone (Pixel 7) to browse the web, use Facebook, watch Youtube, and view their photos. Or is it going to be a frustrating experience with ads bothering them constantly, and it's worth spending (quite a bit) extra on a normal Android tablet?
    Jonah13's avatar
Think this would be good for anyone to surf the internet, check emails, watch youtube on. Much better than a phone screen size. From the description, the ads only appear when locked or in sleep mode.

Personally, I don't bother with Fire toolbox and just download the 4 apk's to add the Playstore. This way you can still keep your tablet updated and as I'm an Amazon Prime member the Amazon apps are useful to me.

Out of interest what Amazon apps do you use?

I've just bought one and have refrained from opening it in case anything else catches my eye on Prime Day. I've had a couple of 8" Amazon tabs over the years for my kids when they were in single figures which were left pretty much stock for their use. I was going to fully debloat mine, to make it run better/smoother, so was curious as to your reasoning/use case.

  29. ChapOfSteel's avatar
The last time I bought a certified refurb it was basically new.

Seems a crazy price so I have gone for one of these, I have an iPad Air that doesn't get a lot of use so may sell that and use this instead. Obviously not going to get the same level of performance but this is a bargain.

It's a superseded model so maybe Amazon just trying to clear the decks without annoying other retailers. No idea if they still do but Apple used to do this all the time with 'old' product. Product would turn up absolutely brand spanking new. (edited)

With regards to using Toolbox and making it a Google Tablet, I really am not sure of the status of that now, but looks like it is no longer possible (unless you get one on an old firmware and don't update)...

I have not looked too closely, but I think this is the main XDA thread on this subject...certainly does seem to have issues....

    forum.xda-developers.com/t/w…623

Personally, I would not bother if it is not possible, even at this cheap price. It will still be okay for streaming audio and video apps, but not much else I think. (edited)

I have one of these and it's a great tablet - used the toolbox to get rid of the bloat and ads and make it a normal android tablet. Easy to do.
I bought it in June 2021 when they were new from Amazon for £79.99...
It's a great tablet, but not sure this is a bargain for a refurb.
Nothing comes close for the price though....so maybe it is.. (edited)

  33. josh971's avatar
Can you install apps on the space added with a micro SD does anyone know please?
    MDL199's avatar
You can set the SD card as internal storage so everything can go on the card. As soon as it detects your SD card it will ask if you want to format it as internal storage. So if you stick in a 128gb card your internal storage will show as 160gb.

It is quite simple to put the playstore on this tablet and believe me, technology and I will never be best friends. Loads of clear and very straightforward instructions on you tube. I love mine for its simplicity, does everything I want it to do. For just over 60 smackeroonies, it's a bargain. Like everyone else has said, if Prime day pricing is less than this, send it back.
