To be fair the claim "no need for ever a battery" is untrue, it has a rechargeable battery inside which does eventually fail, mine did at just over 5yrs.

Eco Drives usually use a capacitor internally which is different to a rechargeable battery. cousinsuk.com/pro…ors
I’d say you’ve been very unlucky having a Citizen fail after 5 years. I have seven eco drives two of which are around 15 years old and still going strong. Should an Eco Drive stop working and it’s not for the lack of artificial or natural light then in all likelihood it’s the capacitor that needs replacing. As long as you obtain the correct capacitor for your model watch it’s as easy to replace as a conventional battery powered quartz watch, then just leave in natural or artificial light for 24hrs or so to be up a running again. 11 years with my Citizen Eco drive and no issues with the battery. I leave it in sunlight regularly to charge it up
