I find the microphone sensitivity is rubbish on our 5th gen Dot.

I've got to say the 4th isn't amazing unless you're in the same room.

Turning on the "notification at start of command" setting helps. Alexa gives a little muted chime after you say her name, let's you know it's listening and heard you.

For the Dot I set this up simply by asking it how to do it! (edited)

I bought the 4th Gen based on sound quality. To my ears the 5th gen sounds tinny and cheap in comparison.

The review says 5th gen is slightly bassier but not quite as loud as the 4th. I find the 4th too bassy anyway and have it several steps down in the EQ, plus treble up a lot. It's not my ears, listening to flat output on Bluetooth earbuds with no EQ gives perfect results for me.

By the way you can get a Mission battery base for Dot 4th gen for £15 now, makes the Dot portable. May not be 5th gen compatible though.
