Would one of these be better than an oil heater for a garden office/cabin?

In terms of running costs and actually heating up the room.

What you should be aware of is that energy cannot be created or destroyed (at least when talking about heaters). So a 1.2kw heater will turn 1.2kw of electricity into heat. All heaters are incredibly efficient in terms of turning electricity to heat so there's no discernible difference in efficiency.

These will be far more directional than an oil heater and 1.2kw is a relatively small output, 3 pin plug mains heaters top out at 3Kw (240v x 13A).

What you will likely find is that if you don't need to heat the space continually and you are going to be in one place that you can just put a lower powered heater directional pointing at you and remain warm for much less energy use than heating the space.

Remember if you heat the space then when you leave and it cools you wasted all that heat that you leave in the room. That's not such a big deal for a house that you live in but might be for a home office in the garden.

Poorly insulated rooms will also lose a lot of heat if space heated.

One of these presently (April 2024) would be 30p per hour to run.

I bought one of the Dunelm ones springtime last year thinking the same, it lasted about 2 wks before an element popped, another went next day..

Great deal. Usually similar prices for this time of the year so can't go wrong. Heat added.

As another poster has said, don't bother.

I've had about 5 of these and the elements go really quickly.
