ABRIDGED ARTICLE (forces.net/her…ces )

Military personnel and veterans attending services of remembrance will be able to travel to and from the events by train for free next month.

The offer will benefit people travelling to and from services anywhere in Britain on Remembrance Sunday on 12 November.

And veterans and serving personnel attending the Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the Cenotaph can travel to any London terminal for free on Saturday 11 November or on the day itself – and be able to return home for free afterwards.

Rail Delivery Group (RDG), which represents train companies, said the offer is open to serving military personnel in uniform or who show a current Ministry of Defence-issued identity card.

Veterans can show a Veterans Railcard, a Veterans Oyster card or other proof of service such as a Ministry of Defence-issued Veterans ID card.

Working in partnership with the Royal British Legion (RBL), the rail industry has also offered free travel to volunteers registered to raise money at official Poppy Day events in London on 2 November and Manchester on 9 November if they produce their RBL-issued ID.

Veterans or serving personnel taking part in other Remembrance-related events earlier in November may also be able to travel for free and should contact the train company they plan to use.

Network Rail is due to undertake planned engineering works on some lines on 11 and 12 November and those intending to travel are asked to check in advance whether their planned journey will be affected.

Poppy sellers fundraising at the official London appeal on 2 November will be able to travel to the capital for free on 1 or 2 November and from London on 2 or 3 November.

Those raising funds at the official Manchester event on 9 November can travel to the city for free on the day or on 8 November. They can also enjoy free travel out of Manchester on 9 or 10 November.

Can't find any mention of this on NR's site? The links just go to the home page & searching the site for "remembrance" brings up nothing either.

The article in description is the best source of info, however there is a press release from the RDG, whom NR are part of:

And London taxis will be waiting at all mainline stations to take veterans and their families to the cenotaph for free.

It’s good to see this continuing and maybe the MOD could get a shifty on with bringing the system in for cards for those that left prior to them being introduced

Yeah I had to email admin in the navy to get the join and leave dates which was enough proof for the 3 year 30% off veterens rail discount card.

If they don't go on strike again

They've tried it previously on these dates and backlash was so strong they cancelled the strikes. Assume they just moved dates to target another event

You can't even apply for a veteran ID.

Unlikely many have a veteran rail or oyster card.

It says "other" so I assume a discoloured photo of you in the Naffi with a dodgy tash will be OK.

Unlike most offers like this, it would take a brave (or incredibly stupid) staff member to try and charge or fine an older person for travelling without a ticket during the offer period. It'll be the younger veterans who potentially could have an issue, but I suspect they'd be more likely to have the Veterans Railcard or some sort of old military ID anyway. Kudos to the rail industry for continuing to roll out this concession every year.

Well done British rail....maybe extend it to a free tea or coffee ?

Wish we were as patriotic as the Americans and provided things for free for Veterans all year long.
    deleted2460409's avatar
No thank you. As a veteran myself I cringe at America.

It should be free 24/7 for them.

Agree with you. Two thumbs up! Nothing in the world can replace their sacrifice to fight for this country. They should be entitled to it. At least, we can say that the word 'entitlement' has a true meaning. These days, many people think that they are "self-entitled"to everything. (edited)

I think I need glasses, I read this as vegetarians attending Remembrance Sunday initially and thought this didn’t make sense so had to read again great deal

It should be the whole month!

brilliant of them. About time companies and people showed more respect to those in our armed forces.

Veterans already get many perks. This is a welcome deal but the way you speak is as though currently nothing is done.

The only issue will be proof of service for a lot of people. If the proof of service is limited to the 3 forms of ID listed.
    Polar1's avatar
There are veteran cards such as Defence Discount etc that should be valid proof

I have a veterans railcard with photo of me and my wife on it, how do we avail of this offer? Just turn up and show card if asked?
    premierfella's avatar
I don't see anything in their press release suggesting that the free return travel to ceremonies would apply to partners travelling with them (unless of course they also served/serve in the military).

Showing the veterans railcard is sufficient evidence if travelling by rail for a service on Saturday 11th or Sunday 12th for the person who served/serves in the military according to the press release.

I thought Veterans Railcards were just for the named service person?

Probably worth a mention that the press release on RailUK mentions this:
"Veterans or serving personnel taking part in other remembrance-related events earlier in November may also be able to travel for free and should contact the train company they plan to use."
I imagine this year with the 11th falling on a weekend there probably aren't that many weekday remembrance events going on, but the strong indication is that if you are involved in a weekday event the rail company are likely to give you something to show rail staff to travel to and from it for free.

Excellent gesture and well done op for sharing.

You'll only get there if the trains run. Or are they having a non strike day on Remembrance Sunday?
